Fortis Acquires Label Technology Fortis Solutions Group, a portfolio company of Main Post Partners, has acquired Label Technology Inc. Label Technology, based in Mer- ced, California, is a printer of flexible packaging, stand-up pouches, and pressure sensitive labels. Founded In 1986, Label Technology became 100 percent employee owned through an ESOP (Employee Stock Owner- ship Plan) in 2007. Label Technolo- gy serves a wide range of industries, including the food, natural products, nutraceutical, cosmetic and health and beauty end markets. Fortis employs more than 700 employees across 13 sites. One of Colombia’s leading manufacturing suppli- ers of flexible packaging, Flex Pack SAS, has installed Flexo Wash technology at its plant in Bogota to help improve the quality of work being produced on its two flexo printing presses. Founded in 2001 and still owned and managed by Carlos Alberto González and his wife Maribel Jácome, the company is vertically in- tegrated offering a variety of services in-house from extrusion to rolling, printing, and valve inserting. Cur- rently around 90 percent of all output is printed, and then supplied to markets as diverse as food and bever- age, household goods, and medical supplies. It was with the advent of its second printing press in 2018 that Flex Pack realized the need to improve its overall production efficiency. Following a visit to Label- expo in Chicago, Illinois, and a meeting with the Flexo Wash team, the decision was made to invest in a PW- 82WR PlateWasher and an FW992XL AniloxWasher. According González, the machines have trans- formed Flex Pack’s capability to reduce cleaning times and brought a degree of automation to the production process. Since installation of the FlexoWash technology, Flex Pack has seen a noticeable improvement in print qual-

AICC Mexico Gathers For Annual Meeting & Trade Fair The Grand Fiesta Americana Hotel in Queretaro, Mexico welcomed more than 175 AICC members to gather for the AICC Mexico Annual Meeting & Trade Fair, May 15-17. The Meeting began with the seminar Psychology and Great Package Design , led by Dr.Andrey Hurley,Profes- sor,Clemson University,Department of Food,Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences, which discussed how to mea- sure the efficiency of packaging design in retail markets and in electronic commerce. New Graphic Arts Coalition Formed
A group of associations, educators and industry representatives has formed the Graphic Communica- tions Workforce Coalition. As stated in its organizing documents, “The purpose of the coalition will be to coordinate the efforts of all organizations represent- ing the broad scope of the graphic communications industry for creating awareness, recruitment of new people into the industry,providing a framework for ap- prenticeship and training programs, and the retention of the existing workforce. By combining the separate efforts, experiences and initiatives of various organi- zations, coordinating actions and the sharing of ideas and resources, it is expected that all will benefit.” This new initiative will address the number one issue that faces the industry today: recruitment, retention and training of its workforce. Numerous studies and surveys have documented that this is a major concern for nearly every company in the industry. Various as- sociations and individual companies have taken steps to address this issue, but there has never been an or- ganized joint effort. The Coalition will seek to bring together and focus efforts and energy. Membership will be open to interested parties representing a broad spectrum of the graphic com- munications industry.This will include associations, vendors to the industry, educational institutions and all areas of print and graphic communications service providers. New Corrugated Antitrust Training Video Available AICC,The Independent Packaging Association, Fibre Box Association (FBA), and the International Corrugat- ed Packaging Foundation (ICPF) have released a new antitrust training video. Stora Enso To Convert Oulu Paper Mill
in Switzerland last year, the Digital Inspection Table in- corporates digital projection for the proofing of printed sheets and die-cut blanks,whilst providing real-time visu- al representations to match product with digital proofs.
Stora Enso will invest approximately EUR 350 mil- lion to convert the Oulu paper mill in Finland into packaging production. The investment will include a new world-class line for virgin-fibre based kraftliner (both brown and white-top) with an annual capacity of 450,000 tons, the modification of the pulp mill and drying machine for unbleached brown pulp, as well as investments to enhance the mill’s environmental per- formance.The project will start with ground work in the summer of 2019, and about 200 contractors will work at the Oulu Mill site during the project. EFIA To Host Second Sustainability Meeting
The European Flexographic Industry Association (EFIA) is to shortly host its second sustainability fo- cused breakfast meeting, addressing the need for edu- cation both in the industry and for consumers to meet the challenges of the ‘Blue Planet Effect’. EFIA hosted a similar meeting in September 2018, where insights and discussions concluded that the flexographic printing community must collaborate, innovate, legislate and educate to ensure the industry continues to keep up with social and market trends in relation to sustainability. The next EFIA sustainability breakfast meeting on June 14 will focus on the education element of these findings. Katie Graham Marketing and Communications Manager Pamarco Often overlooked at first glance, it doesn’t take long to see the value that education is bringing to our in- dustry.As someone who’s been in this
business for quite some time, experience has shown me what an incredible resource is at our fingertips if we consider the number of universities and programs supporting the print and packaging industry that are available today. It’s such a large sphere that it can feel overwhelming to think about how to make an impact as an individual. I’m here to tell you that it can be done with ease, and it’s actually quite a privilege. To begin, take a look at the geography of our nation: we’re spread out. Because of this, opportunities vary based on your physical location. Some of the univer- sities we look to as standard-setters, like Rochester In- stitute of Technology, aren’t the ideal option for every business to be closely engaged with or for students to attend. It’s important to look around and see what your choices really are. In my area, for example, we are in close proximity to Clemson University; a school with great programs for those interested in the print- ing and packaging industry. Making Connections Once you find your local options, the best way to connect is to simply be visible. Offer yourself as a guest speaker on a subject in which you’re an expert, or extend your services as a mentor for those interest- ed in your field. It’s a great way to meet the students going through the program, share your knowledge with them, and to become a champion of support as they make their way through the challenges of finding a full-time job fresh out of school. Another way to make an impact is to establish an internship program based on manufacturing, sales or technical services. In doing so, you’ll provide students with the opportunity to work in the real environment while also helping our businesses hone in on real tal- ent to support future growth. Internships afford stu- dents the chance to see different career paths in ac- tion and align their goals accordingly. On a larger scale, companies can encourage educa- tion by supporting organizations like FTA,TAPPI, and AICC.These organizations provide many avenues that educate, motivate and propel our industry forward. Guillermo Dufranc, Graphic Project Manager, Tridim- age gave a presentation entitled“Design Playlist for Baby Boomers,Gen X,Millennials and Gen Z,”which examined the end of “one size fits all” when it comes to meeting consumer needs through tailored product branding. Building on this, the afternoon’s panel discussion fo- cused on creating products with stand-out presence. A line-up of regional branding experts featured Luis Arevalo, Design and Packaging Director Latin America, Colgate-Palmolive; Catalina Botero J., Brand Develop- ment Director,Grupo Familia; Luisa Garcia, Brand Man- ager, Compañía Nacional de Chocolates (Grupo Nutre- sa); and Ader Cárdenas, Design Manager, Quala Nova. Day two of the conference began with Juan Sebastián Estrada Hernández, Chief Executive Officer, Ideeo 4.0, leading a session on business diversification into label and packaging production from other industries. Label Summit Latin America Concludes In Colombia Label Summit Latin America, held May 14-15 in Medellín, Colombia, attracted 749 of the label and package printing industry representatives who came together to share ideas and help shape its future direc- tion in the region. Part of Labelexpo Global Series, the two-day event was aimed at equipping senior label converters in the region with insight into the industry. Held at Plaza Mayor, Label Summit Latin America 2019 was held for only the second time in the city (previously in 2014), and the third time in Colombia. Attendee numbers were the highest in the country to date, with suppli- ers and label and package printing industry stakehold- er delegates from 31 countries attending 15 sessions. Designed with a strong business and strategy theme, the focus for day one of the conference was on leg- islation and trends in Colombia as well as the wider region, and design and branding. Day two focused on business markets and new opportunities.
