WHAT I’M GRATEFUL FOR

As hard as it is to believe, Thanksgiving is already upon us. Everyone’s out buying turkeys, but I confess that when I go to the grocery store, I’m heading right for the sweet potatoes. No disrespect to the bird, but Margaret’s sweet potato souffle is just about my favorite dish on this good earth. I’m making sure she has everything she needs to make plenty! Other than my wife’s amazing dessert, there won’t be much cooking happening at our house this year. We’re planning on spending that particular Thursday at my mother’s house, along with two very special guests: Jessica and my grandmother. Now, my grandmother is nothing if not astounding. At 98 years old, she’s still sharp as a tack and is only now beginning to need some physical assistance. She moved in with my mother just this year, but she is still very independent for her age. So it seems like this is the perfect time to hold Thanksgiving at my mother’s house, where we can get four whole generations of our family under one roof! Speaking of independence, Jessica’s first semester of college is going extremely well. It was hard watching her go off to Covenant all by herself, but less than a month in, Margaret and I realized our daughter was really in her element. She’s made plenty of friends, even helping shy students come out of their shells and get involved. Of course, she’s learning a lot from them as well. Many of her classmates come from foreign countries, some as far-flung as India! As someone who’s always seen the importance of diversity, Jessica relishes learning about the cultures and experiences of her new friends. Best of all, she’s managing to do this while staying on top of her studies! It’s hard to ask for more from a freshman during fall semester. We’re also set to be making some new friends here at Pye- Barker. At the time of writing, we have some job offers out and will hopefully have new faces to introduce you to in the coming months! We’ll also continue to grow and make changes as we

move forward into 2020 — we never want to grow complacent. We’re always seeking to be a better partner with the businesses that trust us with their engineering solutions. So I suppose this is just my way of saying how grateful I am for the people in my life. I’m thankful for my wonderful family, their health, and the strides they’ve made this year. I’m proud of our team here at the business and the ways we’ve risen to the challenges of 2019. And last, but certainly not least, I’m grateful to you, our partners, who have grown along with us over the years.

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

-Eric Lunsford

TOO BUSY TO 5 SIMPLE WAYS TO STAY ACTIVE Being active doesn’t have to mean going to the gym every single day. An active lifestyle can be as simple as going for a walk around the neighborhood for a few minutes a day. There are plenty of ways to exercise during daily activities like shopping, spending time with your kids, or hanging around the house. PARK FARTHER AWAY. A lot of people will spend several minutes trying to find a parking space as close as they can to the entrance of a store. However, parking a little farther away will help you score a better parking space and make sure you get your steps in for the day. DO SOME YOGA. You don’t have to push yourself to your absolute limit in order to stay active. There are other, gentler ways to exercise than running 5 miles a day. Tai chi or yoga are excellent low-impact alternatives to keep your body fit and healthy.

REDUCE TV TIME. It can be tempting to plop down in front of the television after a long day at work or after dinner, but you can also

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE FIELD MEET RICHARD BENNETT!

Few words strike fear into a plant owner’s heart more than “downtime.” The lost productivity, time, and money from a single pump or blower malfunctioning can quickly become untenable. That’s why we have highly experienced field service technicians on call and ready to get your plant back online at a moment’s notice. Richard Bennett is one of these talented professionals. “I like meeting new customers — every day brings something different,” Richard tells us while driving between service calls. Having done contract work with us since January, this former Georgia Pacific mechanic became a full-fledged part of our team this August. “What I like at Pye-Barker is the small-family feel,” Richard reflects from the driver’s seat. “Everyone knows one another.” “I came to Pye-Barker looking to start a new chapter,” Richard tells us. He explains that having variety in the work he gets to do was a big factor in making the carrier jump from operator mechanic to field technician. “It can be challenging when working on competitors’ machines,” he says. “The concepts are the same, but the design is different … Still, it’s better than doing the same thing every day.” Richard is just as adventurous during his off hours as he is in his profession. When he’s not at the shooting range or hunting, you can find him fishing, climbing, rappelling, or just enjoying a hike in the

Georgia backwoods. It’s clear this South Carolina native loves to explore everything our state has to offer!

Cool, confident, and efficient, Richard is the embodiment of what a service technician should be. Whether working on one of our units or even a competitor’s, he has the know-how and dedication to get your plant running smoothly, fast. We’re lucky to have him as a part of our team!

use this time to be active. Get the family together for a walk around the neighborhood, take a few minutes to dance to some of your favorite tunes, or do some light cleaning around the house. PUT A SPIN ON DATE NIGHT. Forget dinner and a movie. Instead, try taking your date out for a round of miniature golf, indoor rock climbing, an evening stroll, a bike ride, or dancing. You’ll have more fun while doing your body good. GRAB A LEASH. Having a dog gives you plenty of opportunities to stay active. If you don’t have a dog, try asking a neighbor or friend if they would like their dog walked, start a dog-walking service, or volunteer at a local animal shelter. There are plenty of ways to make staying active a part of your daily routine! With enough creativity and motivation, you can turn any activity into an active one. WORK OUT? LAUGH OUT LOUD

FROM PLANT TO TABLE FOOD PROCESSING PUMPS When most people think of Thanksgiving dinner, their minds probably don’t jump to industrial pumps. But the truth is that the turkey and most of the fixings at your table simply wouldn’t be there without vacuums, air-operated diaphragms, and a huge variety of other pumps essential to food processing. As anyone in the industry knows, this equipment is vital to keeping meat, fruits, and vegetables in stock and safe to eat. PUMPING FOOD TO THE TABLE Pumps allow food to be processed in vast quantities while meeting strict hygiene regulations. Whether it be separating out organic waste or vacuum sealing fresh cuts of beef, pumps perform essential tasks in contained, sanitary environments. Of course, not just any pumps will do. The demands of properly processing organic material require very niche specifications. A LOT TO CHEW ON Food processing pumps have to overcome many challenges. Depending on the application, they may have to handle products that can be stringy, caustic, or oily and that can contain food, animal, or packaging debris. Furthermore, these pumps have to meet strict hygienic guidelines, have CIP (clean in place) and SIP (sterilization in place) features, and be designed in accordance with EHEDG guidelines. It can be hard enough to find a pump that will do the job, let alone one that will do the job well. ENOUGH ON YOUR PLATE Choosing the right pump can be a challenge to even the most seasoned veteran. Not only do you need to find one suited to the viscosity, shear sensitivity, and hygienic requirements of your application, but your choice should also be energy-efficient and reliable. That’s where having an experienced pump supplier can help. If you run a food processing plant, chances are you have enough on your plate with FDA regulations, supply logistics, and day-to-day operations without needing to find the perfect pumps for your applications. You know your business and we know ours — let the trusted experts at Pye-Barker help you find the absolute best solution. Pick up the phone and call 1-800-282-9784!

The 1995 Rugby World Cup

In early November, the 2019 Rugby World Cup will wrap up in Japan. The international competition brings out world-class athletes and entertainment. While matches are certainly intense, respect for the competition and for referees is a core tenet of rugby culture. After going head-to-head with an opponent, you’ll still shake hands, and maybe have a beer together, at the end of a match. This principle was on full display nearly 25 years ago at the 1995 Rugby World Cup final in South Africa. The South African Springboks were up against the New Zealand All Blacks, and a number of factors made this an exceptional match. Just a few years earlier in 1991, apartheid legislation had been repealed in South Africa. The policy had left a deep cut, and the country still had a long journey toward healing and reparation. Nelson Mandela, who had been elected in 1994, was set on championing a “rainbow nation” in this new postapartheid era. Rugby started in England in the late 1800s, and colonizers took it to South Africa, where South Africans of every color embraced THE 1995 RUGBY WORLD CUP THE SPORT THAT UNITED A COUNTRY

the game. It was controversial because of its connection to the architects of apartheid, but Mandela saw rugby’s potential as a symbol of hope and unity for a country that desperately needed it. Springboks captain Francois Pienaar (played by Matt Damon in “Invictus,” the film adaptation of this event) thought the president’s support of the team was a brilliant act. “During those six weeks, what happened in this country was incredible,” Pienaar said. Just before the final game that would decide the 1995 World Cup winners, Mandela sported a Springboks jersey and stood behind the team. Through a hard-fought match, South Africa came out on top, and, after receiving the trophy from President Mandela, Pienaar explained the atmosphere of the event: “When the final whistle blew, this country changed forever.” If the 1995 World Cup was any indication, the camaraderie inherent to rugby can transcend all kinds of barriers. Meet a fellow rugby player or fan in any part of the world, and you’ll likely forge an instant kinship. In 2021, you can look forward to cheering on the women’s teams during the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
