The gut-skin axis Contemporary research is contributing evidence to this ancient approach, with the new understanding of what is now known as the gut-skin axis. This term describes the connection between the gut microbiome, digestion, stress response and skin barrier, and the visible appearance of the skin. Put simply: if the gut and nervous system are unbalanced, the skin will also be affected. Ayurveda provides a wealth of knowledge to support this critical relationship between the mind, body and skin, through a combination of optimising digestion, using active botanical remedies and a implementing a workable daily self-care routine. For example, a key pillar of Ayurvedic practice is to balance agni, or digestive fire. When agni is in harmony, the body will feel cleaner, lighter and more energised. However, if agni is unbalanced, digestion may become overheated or sluggish, resulting in bloating and heaviness. Ayurveda also emphasises the role that the mind plays. Stress, overwork, poor sleep and overstimulation all disturb the body’s natural rhythms, and can trigger skin dullness, congestion and uneven tone. Inner calm, outer glow The Ayurvedic message is beautifully simple: your skin responds to the way to live, rest, digest and feel every day. Practise these simple rituals – and enjoy the results. Morning radiance Start your day by protecting your skin with Holy Sanity Saffron Glow Day Face Oil. After cleansing, place 2-6 drops on your palm, then pat gently onto your face and neck to spread evenly, before massaging into skin with upward and outward strokes. In Ayurveda, saffron, or kesar, has
long been treasured as a botanical aid to creating a radiant, bright and glowing appearance. Modern science confirms this traditional wisdom, because saffron has been found to be rich in crocin. This naturally-occurring carotenoid pigment gives saffron its beautiful golden colour, and it is also known for its exceptional antioxidant activity, which explains its benefits for skin vitality. Along with other saffron-derived compounds, crocin has a positive relationship with tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin balance, meaning it can reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone. Evening purification
Blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) has a long history of use in traditional beauty rituals. It contains
nuciferine, a plant alkaloid which has been
studied for its effects on brain pathways associated with feeling calm and relaxed. If you are
emotionally overwhelmed or stressed, dab a few drops onto the skin of your neck or pulse points; the soft aroma invites slower breathing and heart rate, while the delicate oil comforts the skin, leaving it feeling supple and nourished. Inner health Ayurvedic teachings remind us that true radiance requires support from within, not just topical skincare products. When your digestive system is weakened or sluggish, this inner disharmony will become apparent in your skin’s appearance. One of the simplest ways to support your daily digestive rhythms is to swap out a regular caffeinated drink with a carefully blended herbal infusion of one of the Maharishi Ayurveda Teas. Choose from Vata Tea (with sweet licorice, ginger and cardamom to counter anxiety, scattered thoughts and bloating); Pitta Tea (contains gentle spices and organic rose petals to encourage inner coolness, comfort and calm); or Kapha Tea (a blend of warming spices to awaken the senses, facilitate
When you sleep, your skin shifts naturally towards a renewal mode, making evening the perfect
time to use Holy Sanity Manjish Elixir Night Face Oil. In Ayurveda, manjishtha – also known as
Indian madder (Rubia cordifolia) – is a respected botanical treatment for skincare, and has been traditionally used to purify and balance skin. Once again, modern research helps to explain its efficacy, with the root of manjishtha being found to contain the anthraquinones alizarin and purpurin. Similarly to crocin, extracts of these compounds demonstrate a relationship with melanin-related pathways like tyrosinase, and thus play a role in reducing uneven pigmentation.
