Ageing: A New Perspective

Naturopath Danny Urbinder explains what happens when we age, and how you can rethink your life span.

The ageing process commences deep within the body, and long before any outward changes appear. Subtle shifts occur within every cell

If you picture an older version of yourself as occurring at some time in the future, when you have grey hair, aching joints or feel frail and are slowing down, it is time to erase that image. Your grandparents may not have been able to reap the benefits of what we now know about health and ageing - but you can. Redefining your age Research tells us that the keys to living longer and staying healthier are in our hands. Have you ever wondered why some people seem to age better

of your body throughout your life, gradually causing energy production to become less efficient, metabolic flexibility to decline. Inflammation can become harder to regulate and the body’s repair systems may not work with the same precision they once did.

However, this does not mean you have to get sicker as you get older. By taking small preventive steps now,

than others? The three key steps to ageing well are to stay physically and mentally active, take preventive measures to avoid major diseases, and keep a positive attitude and stay connected socially. Importantly, the way you age is not necessarily dictated by your genes. Studies into how we age and how we can look and feel young for longer show that lifestyle factors - such as diet, health risks taken, screening tests, exercise and stress – all play a larger role in determining your health than your genes do. For

example, de-stressors like yoga and meditation can actually boost your immune system; a sensible weight management program will have a dramatic effect on both your mental and physical performance, especially with regards to balance and gait; and a range of nutritional supplements have been proven to optimise metabolism, boost energy and help you live longer.

condition for years to come, two of the most important topics to focus on are improving cellular energy and metabolic health. 1 Boost cellular energy: Central to understanding the role and activity of cellular energy in the body is NAD+, which is a coenzyme that is found in every living cell. NAD+ is required

for mitochondrial function, repair of DNA, cell signalling and the production of ATP, the body’s principal energy molecule. NAD+ levels will decline naturally with age, and this decline has been linked to reduced cellular function, lower energy production and a greater vulnerability to age-related health problems. Although supplemental NAD+ is poorly absorbed, cutting-edge research now indicates that two ‘precursor nutrients’, the compounds nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide, can actually be converted into NAD+ in the body. This finding has attracted significant interest in

metabolism can increase your risk of chronic disease, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and fatty liver disease. The good news is that a simple plant- derived compound called berberine, which is traditionally used in both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, can be of significant benefit in improving and supporting your metabolic health. Contemporary science shows that berberine activates AMPK, which is an important enzyme that is involved in cellular energy balance, glucose uptake, the metabolism of fatty acids and mitochondrial function.

health science circles, because it means these nutrients will help to support cellular energy, mitochondrial function and other critical processes associated with healthy ageing. 2 Support metabolic health: By the age of 55, your metabolism starts to slow down. Poor metabolic health is linked to problems with regulating blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, less effective digestion, slower processing of drugs and alcohol, lowered immunity and less efficient digestion and absorption of nutrients, especially fats. In turn, a sluggish

Taken together, NAD+ and berberine offer a complementary approach to healthy ageing. One supports cellular energy and repair, while the other helps regulate the metabolic environment in which those cells must function. Combined with a healthy lifestyle, they represent a targeted way to support not just a longer life, but a better one. Eating to Age Well

What you put in your mouth is a powerful way to enhance your health, stave off ageing and prevent chronic illnesses – and it does not need to be complicated.

For decades, Australians have known Guy Leech as one of the country’s most recognisable endurance athletes – he is a former Australian Ironman Champion, Coolangatta Gold winner, World Ocean Paddling Champion and winner of Australian Celebrity Survivor. Leech is now aged in his 60s, and his focus has evolved from elite performance to something far more universal: helping ordinary Australians to stay active, strong and healthy as they age. After spending decades immersed in the worlds of sport, performance and health, Leech discovered that he kept arriving at the same simple observation, which is that most people want to take better care of themselves – but they are just overwhelmed by where to start. Edible medicine “The problem with modern wellness,” Leech explains, “is that you can walk into almost any healthfood store and find shelves lined with products which target every possible concern. There’s one supplement for joints, another for bones,

one for heart health, one for energy, another for skin, another for healthy ageing … Eventually, a ritual that might have begun with good intentions can become an expensive and exhausting daily routine, where people can end up taking handfuls of tablets every morning. Plus, the more complicated a routine becomes, the harder it is to maintain.” Like many people entering their fifth decade and beyond, Leech started asking

himself different kinds of questions about nutrition, health and ageing, focusing less on peak athletic performance and more on longevity, consistency and simplicity. “These questions really all came down to just one: If you could create one daily nutritional foundation to support healthy ageing, what would it look like?” he says. “And the answer to that question ultimately became the foundation of NEXT50.” Changing nutritional needs Leech believes that healthy ageing is about staying capable. “Most people are not obsessing over ingredient panels or scientific terminology when they wake up each morning,” he says. “Instead, they

are thinking about their quality of life. They want the energy to keep travelling, they want to stay active, they want to keep exercising – walking, swimming or playing golf. They want to feel mentally

they want to feel capable, because healthy ageing is less about chasing perfection and more about maintaining independence, vitality and momentum.” This observation helped to shape the approach to formulating NEXT50 – not as just another generic multivitamin, but as a comprehensive daily wellness formula that is designed to support the multiple body systems which are of most importance as we age. The formula therefore provides support for heart health, bone health, brain health, joint mobility, immune support, energy and vitality, eye health, skin health, healthy ageing and activated B-group vitamin support. Simple efficiency Leech considers that one of the biggest challenges in achieving wellness is not the volume of information – it is being consistent. Small daily changes go a long way towards giving your body what it needs to stay well. “You can have the best health routine in the world, but if it is too difficult to maintain, you will eventually stop doing it,” he says. “My philosophy is very straightforward: Consistency beats complexity.”

This insight was what led the team behind the development of NEXT50 to move away from the traditional “handful of tablets” approach, and to instead create a powdered daily formula that is designed to make supplementation simpler. Using this powder format means that the formula can provide meaningful levels of ingredients, without trying to compress them into multiple tablets or capsules. The result is a single daily scoop that mixes easily into water or a smoothie, with absolutely no artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners added.

The bigger picture Leech is quick to point out that no supplement can replace the foundations of good health. “Movement still matters, along with adequate protein, sleep,

strong social connection and regular mental stimulation. My belief is that the best health routine for you is not the most complicated one – it is the one you do consistently. Increasingly,

routine in the world, but if it is too difficult to maintain, you will eventually stop doing it.”

this approach reflects a broader shift within modern wellness, away

from extreme optimisation and towards sustainable daily habits that people can realistically achieve and maintain. For many Australians navigating life in their 50s and beyond, this may be the most valuable health strategy of all.”

Joint Pain?

Mobility for longevity: how supporting your muscle and joints help you keep healthy

Join the club. The good news is that there are many ways to achieve your goal

of easy-moving, pain-free days .

Winter has a way of revealing what your body needs. As the weather

cools, muscles can feel tighter, joints stiffer and post- exercise recovery slower. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, strength training or a weekend hike, staying active supports physical and mental wellbeing, but in winter, it pays to move thoughtfully and support the body from the inside out. Muscle aches, stiffness and joint pain are common in winter, as cold weather, stress and activity place extra strain on the body. Supporting recovery, nerve function and mobility can help you move more comfortably through the season. Magnesium plays an essential role in muscle relaxation and nervous system support. For active bodies, magnesium can help support healthy muscle function, ease muscle tension and assist recovery after exercise, making it a useful addition when winter movement starts to feel a little harder. A nourishing winter diet rich in whole foods, colourful vegetables, healthy fats and essential minerals can help fuel the body from within, with warming soups, stews and slow-cooked meals offering comfort and steady energy. Inflammation is another key consideration. While the inflammatory response is a normal part of the body’s protective system, ongoing inflammation may contribute to joint stiffness, aches and discomfort. Curcumin, the active compound found in turmeric,

is widely recognised for its anti- inflammatory properties and may help support joint comfort

and flexibility when dietary intake alone is not enough. Topical support can feel especially welcome at this time of year. Gently massaging areas of tension after activity or at the end of the day can help soothe discomfort, encourage circulation and promote relaxation.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Slowly Does It Is winter getting you down? Keep colds and flu at bay, ease sore joints and pump up your energy levels with immune-boosting broth .

As the temperature drops and the days grow shorter, it is natural to seek warmth, comfort and nourishment. Winter invites us to slow down, lean into daily rituals and support our bodies in more intentional ways. Nutra Naturals premium bone broths provide exactly that: a simple, wholesome way to restore and support your health, so you feel your best from the inside out during the colder months. Traditional and seasonal Bone broth has long been valued for its ability to support immunity, gut wellbeing and overall vitality. It is naturally rich in collagen, zinc and the B-group vitamins; it is also a prime source of the amino acids glutamine, glycine and proline, which maintain the integrity of the digestive system. Crafted from Australian grass-fed beef and pasture-raised chicken bones, Nutra Naturals broths honour traditional methods while providing modern convenience. Each batch is carefully prepared via a specialised process: first, it is pressure- cooked to extract nutrients and filtered to remove excess fat, and then either condensed into a rich concentrate or gently dried to a versatile powder. The result? Deeply nourishing and delicious products that fit seamlessly into the busiest routines. In addition to its nutritional benefits, bone broth is incredibly versatile: try a teaspoonful in hot water for a warming savoury shot to start the day, or add it to soups, stir-fries and casseroles. This small addition to your daily self-care makes a meaningful difference in other, more subtle ways. For example, it helps you to stay fuller for longer, supports post-exercise recovery and maintains hydration by providing naturally-occurring electrolytes. Bone broth also offers natural beauty benefits, providing collagen to maintain skin structure and elasticity and to support healthy hair and nails.

Boosting your health to a higher level can start with something as simple as what’s in your cup.

The Nutra Naturals difference Nutra Naturals is committed to quality at every stage. Each Nutra Naturals broth product is made without synthetic preservatives, fillers or unnecessary additives, just clean, wholefood ingredients you can trust which result in nutrient-rich, flavoursome products that contain significantly less fat and more protein than alternatives. While bone broth is often confused with stock, the difference lies in both process and purpose. Unlike supermarket stocks, which are designed primarily for flavour, true bone broth is slow-cooked to extract nutrients from bones and connective tissue, delivering both depth of flavour and genuine nourishment. Nutra Naturals also leads with innovation. Its exclusive Gentle Lock Technology ensures that nutrients, flavour and colour are preserved during the drying process, resulting in a high-quality, shelf-stable powder that retains all the goodness of traditional broth. Vitamin D a New Generation

Do you take vitamin D for bone health? Naturopath Margaret Leedham explains why the new ‘fast-acting’ form could be a better choice for you.

Your body obtains vitamin D from sunlight, as well as from particular foods, such as dairy products and fatty fish. Once it is present in the body, vitamin D then needs undergo a precise activation pathway before it can actually be used by the body to support bone health and immune function. The sunshine vitamin When UVB rays from the sun hit your skin, they convert 7-dehydrocholesterol into vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), which is the starting form of vitamin D. This form then travels to your liver, where it becomes calcifediol (25-hydroxyvitamin

Now a new generation of vitamin D supplements has arrived with Ampli-D®, a clinically studied form of calcifediol. According to manufacturer data from DSM-Firmenich, Ampli-D® can raise vitamin D levels up to three times faster and more effectively than conventional vitamin D3 supplementation, achieving improvements in days rather than months. Calcifediol is already the circulating form of vitamin D, so it is highly bioavailable; nor does it rely on the same liver conversion step that cholecalciferol does. Calcifediol monohydrate, including newer formulations like Ampli-D®, therefore sit closer to the body’s own circulating vitamin D pool, making it a faster, more targeted and modern way to restore and support vitamin D levels, especially in people who need quicker correction or have difficulty maintaining adequate status.

D or 25(OH)D). This is the main circulating form that is used to measure your vitamin D levels in blood tests and is therefore the key marker of your vitamin D status. From there, calcifediol moves to your kidneys, where it is converted into calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D), which is the active hormone responsible for regulating calcium and phosphate balance, and supporting bone and muscle function. Meet calcifediol monohydrate Most vitamin D supplements contain cholecalciferol, which still requires conversion in your liver before it can raise blood levels. However, calcifediol monohydrate is already in the 25-hydroxyvitamin D form, meaning it bypasses that first conversion step and can directly contribute to the circulating vitamin D levels used in blood testing. Calcifediol monohydrate can therefore increase vitamin D status more rapidly and predictably than standard vitamin D3, especially where absorption or conversion is impaired.

LIVE WELL

Stay Stong This Winter

How sick you become when a bacterial or viral invader targets you will depend largely on how strong a defence your immune system can launch against it. Also, when it comes to illness, infectious agents are not always to blame – nutrient deficiencies, degenerative ailments like osteoarthritis, and glitches in an organ or gland will all weaken immunity. For example, diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces too little of the hormone insulin, which results in an increased susceptibility to infections as well as high blood sugar levels. The good news is you have many natural options available to get your amazing fighting forces ready for battle. Charge up your immune system with fortifying superfoods and natural lifestyle changes to beat the cold-weather blues. Winter nourishment that works When the temperature drops, your body naturally craves warming, nourishing foods – and this is more than just comfort. Traditional staples like bone broth are rich in key nutrients that support immune resilience during the colder months. Products like Best of the Bone Chicken Concentrate make it easy to incorporate this age-old remedy into modern routines. Slow-cooked to extract collagen, amino acids and essential minerals, bone broth helps support gut health – which plays a critical role in immunity – while also contributing to joint support and overall vitality. The concentrated format means a simple spoonful can be stirred into hot water for a daily tonic or added to soups, broths and slow-cooked meals for a nourishing boost. It’s an easy, practical way to fuel your body, support recovery and stay strong through winter.

Herbs for Health • Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) , also called purple coneflower, is effective in fighting the viruses that cause colds and flu. Products are available in tablet, capsule and tincture forms; because strengths vary from brand to brand, it is best to follow the label directions. • Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) has been used for over 2000 years in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medical practice. It is highly valued for fighting colds, flu and sinus infections, because it prevents viruses from getting a foothold in the respiratory system. • Medicinal mushroom extracts , notably maitake, shiitake and reishi, help to bolster immunity. • Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) and oil of oregano (Origanum vulgare) are both natural antiseptics. Add a few drops to the water in the bowl of an essential oil diffuser and use in your home and workspace to purify the air. • Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) helps to heal sore throats and cold sores, which can often be more prevalent in dry or windy weather. Add a few drops of goldenseal tincture to half a cup of warm water and gargle with it or swish it around your mouth. • Garlic (Allium sativum) is probably best known for its prowess in warding off heart problems. It contains compounds that thin the blood, thus preventing blood clots that trigger heart attacks, as well as antioxidants that lower blood pressure, keep the arteries flexible and reduce both low-density lipoprotein (LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol) and total cholesterol levels. Garlic also has powerful antimicrobial and antibiotic properties and helps to increase immunity by stimulating production of the white blood cells that fight infections.

Everyday Immune Health

Training your immune system Wellmune ® is a highly purified, yeast- derived beta glucan that supports the immune system in a unique way. Rather than simply stimulating immune activity, Wellmune® helps support the immune system - your body’s first line of defence. By interacting with key immune cells in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, Wellmune® primes immune responses, thereby supporting a faster, more efficient reaction to immune challenges. This process, known as ‘trained immunity’, supports immune readiness without overstimulation, and helps maintain immune balance by supporting the body’s natural defences over time. Research suggests Wellmune® may reduce the incidence and duration of common colds, particularly during periods of increased physical or lifestyle stress. As a foundational immune ingredient, Wellmune® supports everyday resilience as part of a long-term wellness approach.

Maintaining immune health is a year-round priority for many health-conscious people.

Instead of focusing solely on symptomatic support when a cold or flu virus hits, modern immune nutrition takes a more consistent approach, by helping the body stay balanced and resilient in the face of daily demands, like stress, busy schedules and environmental exposure. A well-supported immune system benefits from a combination of targeted nutrients and herbal ingredients which work alongside healthy lifestyle habits. Key compounds - such as Wellmune®, elderberry, echinacea, vitamin C and zinc - each play a distinct role in supporting healthy immune function.

Traditionally used to help relieve symptoms associated with colds, echinacea is understood to support innate immune activity, including macrophage function and early immune signalling pathways. This makes it a well-recognised herbal ingredient for short-term immune support, particularly when the body is under increased seasonal or lifestyle stress. Echinacea is also commonly used in formulations for children, where gentle immune support is required as part of maintaining everyday wellbeing.

The outer layer of your skin contains sebum, an oil produced by sebaceous glands to help your skin stay hydrated. However, in winter sebum production sometimes can’t keep up with demand, especially if you shower a lot in hot water and work or live in environments where the air is dry and over-heated. Windy or low-humidity environments and long days in air-conditioned spaces may leave your eyes feeling dry. If you are looking for additional support, you may wish to check out Sea buckthorn oil. In fact, a 2022 survey found that 85 percent of Australians experience dry eyes 1 . Support your eye health with these tips: 1 Switch screen height: Keep your screens below eye level. This means that your eyelids do not have to open as much, and therefore less of your eyes’ surface area is exposed to screens for prolonged periods. 2 Take breaks: Experts in ophthalmology recommend that you utilise the ‘20:20:20’ rule, meaning that you practise looking at something that is 20 feet (6 metres away) for 20 seconds every 20 minutes of the day.

The IRON issue

When it comes to children’s immune health , vitamin C tends to steal the spotlight, yet there is another essential mineral that is overlooked.

Most parents will know that iron is important for energy production in children; however, the fact that it is also central to the health of their immune systems is less likely to be front of mind. In fact, iron is critical for a wide range of vital functions in a child’s body. In addition to maintaining energy levels, it supports production of healthy red blood cells and supports immune system function. During periods of rapid growth, a child’s needs for iron also increase dramatically. Kids need iron to grow If a child is a fussy eater, has a limited diet or small appetite, getting enough iron through food alone can be a challenge. Iron-rich foods include red meat, poultry, fish, legumes and iron- fortified cereals, but if dietary intake is inadequate, it can be hard to keep up with a growing child’s needs. Signs of low dietary

family life, which is why it makes sense to practise prevention via dietary modification and supplementation, especially when winter hits. Even with a good diet, the cold and wet weather makes extra demands on immune function. Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) and black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) are herbs traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support healthy immune system function and relieve symptoms of mild respiratory tract infections. Zinc and iron are minerals which, along with vitamin C, play vital roles in supporting overall immune system function. IN PROFILE

Healthy immune development starts with good nutrition, and for little ones that means nourishment that is as gentle, natural and supportive as possible. A Natural Evolution in Infant Nutrition

From the beginning, LittleOak has championed goat milk for its natural nutritional benefits and its ability to offer a formula that is closer to nature. Naturally rich in prebiotics, goat milk helps support the development of healthy gut microbiota which in turn strengthens the gut barrier, providing gentle digestion support for growing babies. This makes a well-tolerated option for little ones and a trusted choice for families seeking a more natural formula.

That commitment to being closer to nature continues to shape the brand today. For LittleOak, this philosophy has never been a finish line, but an ongoing promise to keep improving. The latest step in that journey is the replacement of high oleic sunflower oil with beautiful, pressed olive oil across the LittleOak range. While high oleic sunflower oil is commonly used in infant formula, olive oil is more naturally rich in oleic acid, the main fat in breast milk. It also provides

essential fatty acids along with polyphenols, plant-based

compounds known for their antioxidant properties and role in supporting healthy brain and nervous system development. This thoughtful innovation makes LittleOak the first formula in the world made with pressed olive oil, giving Go Vita customers even more confidence in a brand that continues to put nutrition, nature and peace of mind first.

Now with the goodness of olive oil. Fresh whole goat milk, carefully crafted in New Zealand for growing little ones. • Milked & made in small batches • Certified 100% palm oil free • Naturally A2 and easier to digest
