Mayor Paula Assaly looks back at the year 2020 and sees howmuch COVID-19 has dominated life in Hawkesbury. “It is certain that Hawkesbury was not spared by the pandemic,” said Mayor Assaly, during a December 11 phone interview. “The people of Hawkesbury have been dominated by the pandemic.” The mayor observed that COVID-19 “des- tabilized life in the community” because it was a new virus that the medical community knew almost nothing about at the beginning and thus could provide little information to the general public. This created uncertainty and worry to most residents during the early weeks of the pandemic when Prescott-Rus- sell was in lockdown along with the rest of the country.

Since then, medical research has pro- vided a better understanding of the virus and now vaccines exist to fight it. But the impact of the pandemic, Assaly noted, will last beyond the day when the emergency state of health is finally cancelled. “This virus demanded that we change our ways,” she said, “at work, at home, FWFSZXIFSF8IFUIFS ZPVXFSFBDIJMEPS a grandparent, you had to adapt to a new way of life.” The short-term effect of the pandemic included mandatory wearing of masks or other protective gear for day-to-day activities like grocery shopping. Social distancing has been normal. The limits on public and private gatherings, as part of the public health safety protocol, are still seeing resistance from some individuals, but Assaly noted that most people accept and try to follow the guidelines to reduce the risk of community spread of the disease. Hawkesbury has suffered its share of fatalities from COVID-19, Assaly noted, and also the pandemic forced some businesses to close down because they were not able to
adapt to the new reality. &/#3&'r#3*&'4 BUDGET 2021 Unless there is some drastic change in either next year’s projected operation costs or a sudden windfall of provincial or federal funds, East Hawkesbury Township council will approve the 2021 budget during its December 14 session. A one-per-cent increase in property taxes is part of next year’s budget. This is a change from past years when the annual budget has featured a two-per- cent tax increase, and reflects council’s desire to avoid adding financial stress to property owners during the pandemic. – Gregg Chamberlain ROAD SAFETY PREPARATION The roads have been bare and dry most of the time so far this December but the latest forecasts call for snowy weather soon. Jérémie Bouchard, UCPR public works interim director, reported to the public works committee that another of the signs is missing. That makes two now since the UCPR lost one of its speed radar signs to thieves a few years ago. The UCPR provides the signs to its muni- cipalities to assist with traffic safety.

The Beer Store made a big deposit with Hawkesbury’s hospital foundation. The Beer Store raised almost $12,000 for the Hawkesbury & District General Hospital Foundation (HGH) through a recent in-store fundraiser. 3JDL.PSFOP #FFS4UPSFNBOBHFS BOE Danielle Lacelle, fundraising captain, and the store staff collected donations from customers in the form of cash or bottles and cans brought in for deposit. The campaign amassed a total of $11,936.68. “The Beer Store in Hawkesbury raised funds for the HGH Foundation with the help of the incredible generosity of our customers,” TUBUFE.PSFOPi.ST-BDFMMF UIFTUBGG and I were happy to make raising money for our regional hospital a focus during the pandemic.” The money raised goes to the HGH Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund, which helps support HGH with funding for medical equipment and other necessary resources to care for patients, their families, and hospital staff during the pandemic. “The HGH Foundation is so grateful to be the recipient of this wonderful gift from the Beer Store and its customers,” stated Christine Gray St-Denis, HGH Foundation philanthropic projects coordinator. “Their generous support during these challenging times will make a significant difference for our regional hospital.”
