Native American Heritage Month November 2026

One of the things I've loved most during my 50-year career in public libraries is watching libraries continue to evolve to meet the needs of their communities. While books will always be at the heart of what we do, today's library is also about providing access to experiences, opportunities and resources that enrich people's lives. That's why I'm so excited about our new partnership with the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks. With an AACPL library card, customers can now check Your Library Card Opens More Than Books

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SEVERN LIBRARY! Originally named the Provinces Community Library for the nearby neighborhood it served, the Severn Library has been a community cornerstone since opening in October 1986. The only branch within the jurisdiction of the Local Development Council (LDC), which allocates grant funding from Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, Severn underwent a major renovation in 2020. LDC funding also supported the addition of Twig , AACPL's mobile library, which brings books and resources directly to neighborhoods, as well as exterior, bathroom and staff area improvements. An outdoor mural is coming soon. “We are so many things to so many people,” says Branch Manager Ellie Mullen, reflecting on the branch that welcomes approximately 2,500 visitors each week. As the surrounding community has grown by nearly 300 percent, so have the library's services—from early literacy programs to an onsite social worker every Tuesday. Serving nearby military families has also shaped the branch's approach.“Serving a military base often means parents looking for connection with other adults while their spouses are deployed,”Mullen says. “Libraries back in the '80s didn't know they could be what they are today,”she adds.“We see the need and keep on evolving.”
