BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FOOD ENTREPRE- NEURS IN THE UAE The UAE is not only investing in farms and supply chains; it is also fostering entrepreneurship through specialised clusters and SME programmes. One major example is the AgriFood Growth & Water Abundance [AGWA] cluster, launched in 2024 and led by the Abu Dhabi De- partment of Economic Development and the Abu Dhabi Invest- ment Office. The cluster is being developed as an integrated hub for novel foods and ingredients, as well as agrifood and wa- ter-tech industries. Its purpose is twofold: to support local suppliers and exporters, and to create a platform through which emerging technologies - from alternative proteins and algae to reverse osmosis - can be commer- cialised at scale. The same ecosystem-building logic runs through the Food and Agriculture Entrepreneurs Programme, launched by MOCCAE and implemented from 2023 to 2025. The initiative trained 30 young Emirati farmers and entrepreneurs each year, providing mentorship, business training and access to private-sector part- ners in an effort to boost domestic production and reduce de- pendence on imports.

نبتة، وقــــــد صُمّمت المزرعة بما يراعي كفاءة اســــــتخدام 1,870 يضــــــم المياه والطاقة والوقت. ويُعد مشروع “قمح الشارقة” الذي طُوّر في مزرعة مليحة للقمح نموذجًا لافتًا لهذا التحوّل. إذ يمثّل هذا الإنجاز محطة بارزة في مسيرة الابتكار في المئة، وهي الأعلى 19.3 الزراعي، مع تســــــجيل نســــــبة بروتين بلغت هكتــــــارًا من الأراضي 1,428 عالميًــــــا. ويُزرع هذا الصنف على مســــــاحة الصحراوية، وقد جرى تطويره ليتكيّف مع الظروف المناخية القاســــــية، بالاعتماد على تقنيات متقدّمة تدعم الإنتاج المستدام. ويجمــــــع المشــــــروع بيــــــن منظومــــــات ري متقدمــــــة مدعومــــــة بالذكاء في المئة، 30 الاصطناعي، أســــــهمت في خفض اســــــتهلاك المياه بنسبة ســــــلالة 1,450 ومختبرات للتقنيات الحيوية تعمل على تقييم أكثر من مــــــن القمح من حيث قدرتها علــــــى تحمّل الجفاف والملوحة، إلى جانب تقنيات التصوير الحراري عبر الأقمار الصناعية لتحسين الإنتاجية. ومنذ ، وصلت المزرعة في موسمها الثالث عام 2022 بدء تشغيلها في نوفمبر طن من القمح العضوي عالي البروتين، 6,000 إلــــــى إنتاج يقــــــارب 2025 وهي كمية كافية لتلبية الطلب المحلي وفتح المجال أمام التوسّع نحو طن. 15,200 التصدير. كما وُضعت خطط لرفع الإنتاج السنوي إلى بناء جيل جديد من روّاد الأعمال في قطاع الغذاء لا تقتصــــــر جهود دولة الإمارات على الاســــــتثمار في المزارع وسلاســــــل الإمداد، بل تمتد أيضًا إلى دعم ريادة الأعمال من خلال إنشاء مجمّعات متخصصة وبرامج موجّهة للمشروعات الصغيرة والمتوسطة. ومن أبرز هذه المبادرات “مجمع تنمية الغذاء ووفرة المياه”، الذي أُطلق بقيادة دائرة التنمية الاقتصادية في أبوظبي ومكتب أبوظبي 2024 عام
STRAWBERRIES IN THE DESERT, WHEAT IN THE SAND The UAE’s agricultural transformation is perhaps most visible in projects that would once have sounded improbable: strawberries grown at scale in the desert, and wheat cultivated on desert land with globally leading pro- tein levels. Among the country’s best-known examples is the Mirak strawberry farm in Al Dhaid, Sharjah. Founded in 1985, it was the first company in the UAE to grow strawberries and remains one of its earliest agricultural enterprises. Since then, Mirak has continued to export thousands of tonnes of straw- berries annually to Gulf and international markets, while expanding into a range of premium crops that were once imported. Another emblematic project is the Hatta Strawberry Farm. Established in 2022 near Hatta Dam, the farm features two cultivation zones – an open field containing 6,000 plants and a greenhouse with 1,870 plants - and has been designed to conserve water, energy and time. Perhaps the most surprising success is Sharjah Wheat, developed at the Mleiha Wheat Farm. It represents a milestone in agricultural innovation, delivering a protein content of 19.3 per cent – the highest on record globally. Grown across 1,428 hectares of desert land, the variety is tailored for harsh climates and uses advanced technologies to support sustainable production. The project brings together AI-powered irrigation systems that have cut water use by 30 per cent, biotechnology labs evaluating more than 1,450 wheat strains for drought and salinity tolerance, and satellite thermal im- aging to optimise yield. Launched in November 2022, the pesticide-free farm produced 6,000 tonnes of organic high-protein wheat in its third season in 2025 - enough to meet local demand and position Sharjah for
للاســــــتثمار. ويجري تطوير هذا المجمع بوصفه مركزًا متكاملا للأغذية والمكوّنات المبتكرة، إلى جانب صناعات التقنيات الزراعية والغذائية وتقنيات المياه. ويهــــــدف هذا المجمع إلى تحقيق مســــــارين متكاملين: دعم المورّدين والمصدّرين المحليين، وتوفير منصة تتيح ترجمة التقنيات الناشــــــئة - من البروتينات البديلة والطحالب إلى تقنيات التناضح العكسي - إلى تطبيقات تجارية واسعة النطاق. ويمتد هذا التوجّه القائم على بناء منظومة متكاملة ليشمل “برنامج روّاد الأعمال في قطــــــاع الغذاء والزراعة”، الــــــذي أطلقته وزارة التغير المناخــــــي والبيئة ونُفّذ شابًا إماراتيًا 30 . وقد عمل البرنامج على تأهيل 2025 إلى 2023 خلال الفترة من ســــــنويًا من المزارعين وروّاد الأعمال، من خلال توفير الإرشاد والتدريب العملي وربطهم بشــــــركاء من القطاع الخاص، بما يسهم في تعزيز الإنتاج المحلي وتقليل الاعتماد على الواردات. ضمن 2023 وبالتوازي، برز “مركز الابتكار الغذائي في الإمارات”، الذي تأسّس عام مبادرات محمد بن راشــــــد آل مكتوم العالمية وبالشــــــراكة مع المنتدى الاقتصادي العالمــــــي، كمنصــــــة لمعالجة عدد من أبرز التحديــــــات المرتبطة بالنظام الغذائي في الدولــــــة، من بينها الزراعة فــــــي البيئات الجافة، وتعزيز الاقتصاد الدائري، وتوطين الإنتاج، وتطوير البدائل الغذائية. ولقــــــد تــــــم إطلاق المركز خلال مؤتمر اتفاقية الأمم المتحدة الإطارية بشــــــأن تغير )، وحظــــــي منذ ذلــــــك الحين بدعم جهات حكومية ومؤسســــــات COP28 المنــــــاخ ( أكاديمية وشــــــركاء من القطاع الخاص. وفي هذا الإطار، وقّعت “سِــــــلال” مذكرة لإطلاق برنامج 2024 تفاهم مع مبادرات محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم العالمية في عام تابع للمركز، يهدف إلى دعم روّاد الابتكار في مجالَي الغذاء والزراعة للانتقال من مرحلة الفكرة إلى التطبيق التجاري. كما تضم قائمة الشركاء كلا من وزارة التغير
