فـــي ظـــل ظـــروف اســـتثنائيّة وتحدّيـــات غيـــر مســـبوقة مـــرّت بهـــا دولـــة الإمـــارات مؤخّـــرًا، تجلـــت صلابـــة هـــذا الوطـــن، وظهـــر تماســـكه ووحدتـــه علـــى مختلـــف المســـتويات. وفـــي هـــذه الأوقـــات، لا يســـعنا إلا أن نتوجّـــه بخالـــص الامتنـــان إلـــى قيادتنـا الرشـيدة، التـي تمضـي علـى نهـج المغفـور لـه والدنـا الشـيخ زايـد بـن سـلطان آل نهيـــان، طيّـــب اللــــه ثـــراه، فتُحيطنـــا بعنايتهـــا، وتكفـــل لنـــا مـــن الحمايـــة مـــا يبعـــث الطمأنينــة فــي أوقــات يكتنفهــا عــدم اليقيــن. ومــع تعقّــد مشــهديّات المنطقــة، يظــل الشـــعور بالامتنـــان حاضـــرًا تجـــاه اســـتجابة حكومتنـــا الســـريعة والمنسّـــقة والثابتـــة، والتــي لــم تتخلّــف يومًــا عــن واجبهــا أو تنــأى بنفســها عــن مواجهــة المحــن أو تدخــر جهـــدًا فـــي درء الخطـــر. وبفضـــل اللــــه، نواصـــل المضـــي بعزيمـــة وثبـــات، مســـتمدّين قوّتنــا مــن قيــادة تعمــل بــلا كلــل، وتنهــض بمســؤوليّاتها بشــجاعة وإخــلاص، لتصــون أمــن كل مــن يعيــش علــى أرض هــذا الوطــن، مــن مواطنيــن ومقيميــن وزائريــن. كمــا نتوجّـــه بتقديـــر صـــادق إلـــى أبطـــال الصفـــوف الأماميّـــة، الذيـــن يواصلـــون بعطائهـــم وتضحياتهـم ترسـيخ دعائـم الأمـن والأمـان، ويجسّــدون فـي كل يـوم أسـمى معانـي التفانـــي فـــي خدمـــة البـــلاد. مـــن مجلـــة شـــواطئ 73 وانطلاقًـــا مـــن هـــذه الظـــروف التـــي نمـــر بهـــا، نُهـــدي العـــدد إلـــى دولـــة الإمـــارات العربيّـــة المتحـــدة، هـــذا الوطـــن الـــذي يليـــق بـــه كل تقديـــر. وقـــد تــم تحريــر وإعــداد هــذا العــدد الخــاص ليكــون تحيّــة وفــاء وامتنــان لقيــادة حكيمــة وبصيـــرة ثاقبـــة، يقودهـــا صاحـــب الســـمو الشـــيخ محمـــد بـــن زايـــد آل نهيـــان، رئيـــس الدولــة، حفظــه اللـــه، الــذي يشــكّل التزامــه الراســخ بأمــن الوطــن وســلامته، وحرصــه علـــى اســـتمراريّة تفاصيـــل الحيـــاة اليوميّـــة، مصـــدر إلهـــام وســـكينة فـــي نفوســـنا جميعًـــا. برؤيـــة نافـــذة، وعـــزم راســـخ، وتفـــان لا يليـــن، يواصـــل ســـموّه قيـــادة مســـيرة الوطـن بحضـور يقـظ وروح معطـاءة، تعكـس جوهـر القيـادة النبيلـة والشـجاعة فـي أســـمى صورهـــا. وتحـــت رايتـــه، تمضـــي دولـــة الإمـــارات أكثـــر قـــوّة وتماســـكًا، تهتـــدي ببصيــرة قيادتهــا، وتســتند إلــى صلابــة أبنائهــا ووحدتهــم وشــعورهم العميــق بالفخــر والـــولاء. إنّهـــا أمـــة نعتـــز جميعنـــا بالانتمـــاء إليهـــا، ونفخـــر بـــأن نعيـــش تحـــت ســـمائها. يصـــدر هـــذا العـــدد الربيعـــي الخـــاص مـــن شـــواطئ بالتزامـــن مـــع الذكـــرى التاســـعة عشـــرة لانطلاقهـــا، وهـــي محطّـــة مفصليّـــة فـــي مســـيرتها تســـتحضر مـــن خلالهـــا مـــا يقـارب عقديـن مـن الحضـور المؤثّــر والتطـوّر المسـتمر. وعلـى امتـداد هـذه السـنوات، تَشـــكّلت هويّـــة المجلـــة مـــن نســـيج ثـــري مـــن اللحظـــات المؤثـــرة والمحطـــات الفارقـــة والمنعطفـــات الحاســـمة التـــي خاضتهـــا بعزيمـــة دؤوبـــة ورؤيـــة واضحـــة المعالـــم. ، رسّـــخت مجلـــة شـــواطئ مكانتهـــا كمنصّـــة تُعنـــى 2007 فمنـــذ تأسيســـها فـــي عـــام بســـرد الحكايـــات، وتقـــدّم قـــراءات متجـــدّدة للمشـــهدين المحلـــي والعالمـــي، جامعـــة بيــن دفّتيهــا قصصًــا تــروي بالصــورة والكلمــة حكايــة وطــن طمــوح، يخطــو بشــجاعة وثقـــة، ويصـــوغ ملامـــح مســـتقبله برؤيـــة واضحـــة.
علـــى امتـــداد الأعـــوام، وثّقـــت مجلـــة شـــواطئ طيفًـــا واســـعًا مـــن اللحظـــات، رصـــدت مـــن خلالهـــا مـــا حقّقتـــه دولـــة الإمـــارات مـــن إنجـــازات لافتـــة، وفتحـــت صفحاتهـــا لقـــراءات عالميّـــة تعكـــس حالـــة التحـــوّل الدائـــم الـــذي يعيشـــه عالمنـــا. هـــذا الغنـــى والتنـــوّع والانفتـــاح جعـــل مســـيرتها حافلـــة بالعمـــق والاكتشـــاف، تشـــكّلت عبـــر رؤًى مســـتنيرة وزوايـــا نظـــر متعـــدّدة، ومجموعـــة مـــن اللحظـــات المميـــزة التـــي أســـهمت فـــي صـــوغ هويّتهـــا علـــى نحـــو متجـــدّد وخـــلاّق. ورغـــم تنـــوّع الموضوعـــات وتعـــدّد الحكايــات، ظــل خيــط دقيــق يربــط هــذه الســرديات فيمــا بينهــا ويســبغ علــى المجلــة طابعهـــا الوطنـــي، وهـــو الالتـــزام الراســـخ بالاحتفـــاء بأبوظبـــي وباقـــي الإمـــارات، وتتبـــع مســـارات نموّهـــا وازدهارهـــا وروحهـــا الطموحـــة. وبيـــن دور الشـــاهد والـــراوي، اسـتطاعت شـواطئ أن تجمـع أصـوات قـادة ملهميـن ومفكّريـن روّاد، محليًــا وعالميًــا، ممـن أسـهمت أفكارهـم فـي رسـم ملامـح هـذا التحـوّل الاسـتثنائي وصياغـة مسـاره. أولـــى خطواتـــي كرئيســـة تحريـــر مجلـــة شـــواطئ، غيـــر 73 واليـــوم، يشـــكّل العـــدد أن صلتــي بهــذه المجلــة أعمــق بكثيــر، إذ تمتــد جذورهــا إلــى لحظــة التأســيس قبــل مـــا يقـــارب عقديـــن، حيـــن شـــهدت انطلاقتهـــا الأولـــى تحـــت إشـــراف والـــدي، محمـــد خلــف المزروعــي، رحمــه اللـــه، الناشــر الأوّل لهــا. ومنــذ خطواتهــا الأولــى، حتــى قبــل أن تتجلّـــى ملامحهـــا علـــى الـــورق، كانـــت الرؤيـــة واضحـــة: أن تكـــون شـــواطئ مـــرآة تعكـــس ثقافـــة الوطـــن الإماراتــــــــــي وتراثـــه، برؤيـــة متفــــــــرّدة وصـــوت متميـــز خـــاص بهـــا. وقـــد ظـــل هدفهـــا ثابتًـــا، أن تفتــــــــح نافـــذة تطـــل منهـــا الشـــعوب علـــى ثقافتنـــا واعتزازنـــا الوطنـــي، وهـــي الخيـــوط التــــــــــي تنســـج هويّتنـــا، فتقـــــــــرب المســـافات وتربـــط بيـــن أقطـــار العالـــم. إلـــى قرّائنـــا الكـــرام، أجـــدّد عهـــدي بـــأن أصـــون، بـــكل فخـــر وأمانـــة، إرثـــي الثقافـــي الإماراتـي، وأن أواصـل الرؤيـة التـي أرسـى دعائمهـا والـدي لمجلّــة شـواطئ. واليـوم، هـــذا الفصـــل الجديـــد وأنتـــم فـــي صميـــم هـــذا المســـار، نكتـــب ملامحـــه معًـــا، ونمضـــي بـــه نحـــو نجاحـــات أكبـــر. ومـــع طـــي صفحـــة هـــذا العـــدد المفصلـــي، تتبـــدّى أمامنـــا محطّـــات نفخـــر بهـــا، وآفـــاق أوسـع لمـا ينتظرنـا فـي الأعـوام المقبلـة بـإذن اللــه. ومـع اقترابهـا مـن عتبـة العقديـن، تمضـــي المجلـــة برصيـــد أغنـــى مـــن الخبـــرة، وبصيـــرة أكثـــر نضجًـــا، وطاقـــة متجـــدّدة تدفعهــا إلــى الأمــام. ويمتـد امتناننـا الصـادق إلـى شـركائنا الذيـن رافقونـا عبـر السـنوات، بمـا أظهـروه مـن إخـلاص ووفـاء ودعـم لا يتزعـزع، وإيمـان مسـتمر برؤيـة شـواطئ. أمّــا أنتـم، قرّاءنـا فــي دولــة الإمــارات وخارجهــا، فلكــم منّــا أســمى عبــارات الشــكر علــى ثقتكــم، وعلــى كونكـم جـزءًا أصيـلا مـن هـذه المسـيرة، آمليـن أن يجـد هـذا العـدد صـداه لديكـم.

Issue 73 marks my first edition as Editor-in-Chief of Shawati’ . Yet, my connection to this publication runs far deeper - trac- ing back to its founding roots nearly two decades ago, when it was first established alongside my father, Mohamed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, may Allah rest his soul, the Founding Publish- er of Shawati’ . From its earliest conception, even before the first brushstroke was laid, the vision for this publication was clear: to reflect the culture and heritage of the Emirati nation through a unique perspective and distinctive voice. Its pur- pose has always been to offer audiences beyond our shores a window into our culture and national pride - the very threads that shape our identity - bridging distances and connecting diverse worlds. To our valued readers, my commitment is to honour, with pride and integrity, the cultural legacy I carry as an Emirati, and to uphold my father’s enduring vision for Shawati’ . As I step into this new chapter, I do so with you at heart - every step of the way - as we continue to grow and reach new heights together. As we turn the page on this milestone edition, there is much to be proud of, and even more to look forward to in the years ahead, God willing. As we approach two decades, we do so with renewed wisdom, deeper appreciation, and a strong sense of momentum. In a global design economy increasingly preoccupied with speed, scale and surface-level sustainability, Sharjah-based Irthi Con- temporary Crafts Council has taken a markedly different path - one grounded in research, authorship and the rich creativity of women’s hands. Founded in 2015 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Irthi is a Sharjah-based organisation dedicated to preserving traditional Emirati crafts and safeguarding Emirati traditions. A decade on, it has evolved into a transformative international platform reshaping how indigenous craft, labour and cultural value intersect. At its core lies a clear proposition: that traditional crafts are not remnants of a fading past but living knowledge systems capable of sustaining livelihoods and influencing the design languages of tomorrow. Central to this transformation is Her Excellency Reem Bin Karam, Director General of Irthi, whose leadership has ex- panded the Council’s remit far beyond preservation. women to access international markets directly, establish fairer pricing structures, and claim their place as co-creators within global design conversations - from Milan Design Week to Design Miami, and through collaborations with houses such as Bulgari and Cartier. Alongside these high-profile engagements, Irthi has built a ro- bust infrastructure of ethnographic research, digital learning platforms, cross-regional exchanges and ethical market integra- tion, all anchored in a framework that places women artisans’ authorship and agency at the forefront. As Irthi marks its tenth anniversary in 2025, its model contin- ues to demonstrate how craft can function simultaneously as cultural expression and economic engine. Earlier this year, the Council unveiled the Precious Heart jewellery collection in Sharjah, developed under the guidance of HE Reem Bin Karam in collab- oration with the UAE’s Big Heart Foundation and British luxury house Asprey. The founding of Irthi had followed on from a cordial in- teraction the year before, when Her Highness met Umm Ahmed during a visit to the community of Dibba Al Hosn in Sharjah. They discussed Umm Ahmed’s handmade bag and the craft used in creating the piece. That exchange directly inspired the establishment of the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council - to support Emirati craftswomen, enable the transmission of their skills to new generations of artisans and preserve the UAE’s cul- tural heritage. To this day, the craftswomen continue to refine their skills while mentoring younger women at Irthi’s Bidwa Social Development Programme Centre in Dibba Al Hosn. Over the years, this vision has expanded into something far more ambitious. Irthi now operates across the Middle East, North Africa, Southeast Asia and Central Asia, working with craft communities whose stories echo our own - women whose techniques have shaped generations, yet whose contributions often remained unseen. Through collaborations with international designers, research institutions, craft houses and global platforms, we have positioned Emirati artisans alongside their peers worldwide, enabling a dialogue of equals. UNESCO’s 2019 recognition of Talli affirmed what we have long believed: that these heritage forms carry intellectual, artistic and cultural weight worthy of global attention. Today, our work is about crafting living legacies. It is about ensuring artisans are not only guardians of her- itage, but active participants in reimagining its future - equipped with the skills, networks and opportunities to transform their craft into sustainable livelihoods and internationally recognised design languages. Revitalising heritage techniques and giving them a contemporary twist for modern audiences is central to Irthi’s work. How do you maintain a balance be- tween safeguarding these traditions and exploring new design directions? Our approach begins with rigorous documentation and ethnographic research. Crafts such as Talli, Safee- fah and Faroukha are not merely techniques; they are knowledge systems embedded in memory, gesture and material intelligence. Before any reinterpretation takes place, we work closely with artisans to record patterns, processes, terminology and cultural context, ensuring that each craft is preserved with scholarly precision. This documentation forms the backbone of our archives and informs the standards we maintain across all subse- quent collaborations. Once this foundation is in place, innovation becomes an act of continuity rather than disruption. Through research-led design labs, cross-disciplinary residencies and exchanges with contemporary designers, we ex- plore new materialities and applications while continu- ally verifying that the craft’s integrity remains intact. Collections such as AlTaif , Moui , Nadd and Sijada emerged from this methodology - each introducing new aes- thetics without compromising lineage. This approach reflects broader global research showing that heritage crafts evolve most sustainably when interpretation is led by communities themselves, rather than driven by commercial reinvention. Our international partnerships with brands such as Bulgari and Cartier, alongside showcases at Design

Here, the precision and pageantry of equestrian sport were interlaced with the meticulous rhythms of traditional craft, offering audiences an embodied encounter with Emirati culture as a practice that continues to evolve. In this conversation with Shawati’ , Bin Karam reflects on the philosophies and systems behind Irthi’s rising influence: how heritage can evolve without dilu- tion, why women’s craft labour remains structurally undervalued, and what it takes to build an ecosystem where tradition and innovation reinforce rather than compete with one another. From endangered techniques such as Talli to the Council’s forthcoming flagship museum and artisan hub, the discussion offers a rare, inside look at how craft - when approached as living knowledge rather than nostalgia - can become a powerful engine for cultural resilience and economic transformation. Irthi has become a prominent force in traditional craft preservation and the empowerment of craftswomen. What core vision drives your leadership at the Council, and how has that vision evolved over the years? From the outset, our vision has centred on elevating women artisans into a highly valued, future-facing craft economy - one that recognises their knowledge, au- thorship and creative intelligence as essential to both cultural life and economic resilience. أصبــــــح “إرثي” قوّة بارزة في مجال صون الحِرَف التقليديّة وتمكين الحِرَفيّات. ما الرؤية الجوهريّة التي تقود عملك داخل المجلس، وكيف تطوّرت هذه الرؤية عبر السنوات؟ منــــــذ البداية، تمحــــــورت رؤيتنا حول الارتقــــــاء بالحِرَفيّات إلى قلب اقتصــــــاد حِرَفي يحظى بالتّقدير ويتطلّع نحو المســــــتقبل؛ اقتصاد يعتــــــرف بخبرتهنّ، وبملكيّتهن الإبداعيّة، وبذكائهن الخلاّق بوصفها عناصر أساســــــيّة في الحياة الثقافية وفي مرونة الاقتصاد. وعندما تأســــــس تحت رعاية سمو الشيخة جواهر بنت محمد القاسمي، تمثّلت المهمّة الأولى 2015 “إرثي” عام في إحياء الحِرَف الإماراتية، وتوثيق دقائقها، وضمان استمرارها كممارسات حيّة لا كذكريات عاطفية. وقد تطلّب ذلك ما هو أبعد من صون المهارات؛ إذ استدعى إعادة الاعتبار إلى كرامة هذه الحِرَف، وتعزيز صلتها بالحاضر، وتوسيع أثرها في المجتمع. جاء تأســــــيس “إرثي” امتدادًا للقاء ودي جرى في العام الســــــابق، حين التقت سموّها أم أحمد خــــــلال زيارة إلى دبا الحصن في الشــــــارقة، حيــــــث دار الحديث حول حقيبــــــة صنعتها يدويًا والحِرفة التي شكّلت تفاصيلها. وقد ألهم هذا الحوار مباشــــــرة إنشاء “مجلس إرثي للحِرَف المعاصرة”، بهدف دعم الحِرَفيّات الإماراتيات، ونقل مهاراتهن إلــــــى أجيال جديدة من الحِرَفيّين، وصون التراث الثقافي لدولة الإمارات. وإلى اليوم، تواصل الحِرَفيّات صقل مهاراتهنّ، فيما يقمن بإرشــــــاد الشــــــابات داخل مركز برنامج “بدوة” للتنمية الاجتماعية في دبا الحصن. ومع مرور السنوات، اتّسعت هذه الرؤية لتغدو أكثر طموحًا بكثير. إذ يمتد نطاق عمل “إرثي” اليوم عبر الشــــــرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا وجنوب شرق آسيا وآســــــيا الوسطى، متعاونًا مع

وحين يُرســــــى هذا الأســــــاس، لا يعود الابتكار قطيعة مــــــع الماضي، بل امتــــــدادًا طبيعيًا لــــــه. فمن خلال مختبرات تصميــــــم قائمة على البحث، وإقامات فنية عابرة للتخصّصات، وحوارات مع المصمّمين المعاصرين، نستكشــــــف فضاءات جديدة من الخامات وطرقًــــــا أخرى لتطويعها، مع تدقيق مستمر يحفظ للحِرفة سلامة جوهرها. ومن هذه المنهجيّة وُلدت مجموعات “الطيف”، و“موي”، و“ندّ”، و“سجّادة”؛ إذ قدّمت كل منها لغة بصريّة جديدة دون المســــــاس بأصلها. وتعكــــــس هذه المقاربة ما تؤكّده أبحاث عالميّة أوســــــع: أن الحِرَف التّراثية تتطوّر بصورة أكثر اســــــتدامة حين تقود المجتمعات نفسها مسار تأويلها، لا حين تُعاد صياغتها لتخدم منطق السوق وحده. وتعزّز الشــــــراكات الدوليــــــة مع دور مثل بولغــــــاري وكارتييه، إلى جانب المشــــــاركات في تظاهرات فنية عالميّة مثــــــل “ديزاين ميامي” و“لندن ديزاين فير” وأسبوع ميلانو للتصميم، هذا التوازن الدقيق. فحين توضع الحِرَفيّــــــات في قلب الحوارات العالميّة حول تطوير الحِرَف، تصبح هذه الشــــــراكات جســــــرًا يصل بين الحماية والتطوّر، ومسارًا يتيح للتّراث أن يتنفّــــــس، وأن يتكيّف، وأن يُخاطب جمهورًا جديدًا، من دون أن ينفصل عن معناه الأوّل. هل يمكنك مشــــــاركة حِرفة أو تقليد بعينه تعتقدين أنّه يواجه خطرًا حقيقيًا اليوم، وكيف يعمل “إرثي” على حمايته؟ تُعد حِرْفَة التَّلي من أكثر الممارســــــات التراثية عُرْضة لخطر الاندثار في دولة الإمارات، في انسجام مع ما تؤكّده الأبحاث العالميّة من أن انتقال المعرفــــــة بين الأجيال هو العامل الأهم في بقاء أي حِرفة حيّة. وكغيرها مــــــن التقاليــــــد اليدوية، يقوم التَّلي على معرفــــــة تُحفظ في اليد قبل أن تُحفــــــظ في الذاكرة: على حركات يد دقيقة، وإيقاع محســــــوب، وضبط لتوتّر الخيط، وحساســــــيّة عالية تجاه الأليــــــاف - وهي مهارات لا يمكن أتمتتها أو استنســــــاخها رقميًا. ومع اتّجاه الأجيال الأصغر إلى مســــــارات عمل جديدة، تصبح هذه المعارف مهدّدة بالانقطاع أو الفقدان الكامل. ورشــــــة وبرنامجًا 33 وفي مواجهة هذا الاحتمال، نظّم “إرثي” أكثر من مجتمعيًا وتدريبًا بأســــــلوب التلمذة، مســــــتلهمًا نموذج الأستاذ والتلميذ الذي تعتبره به اليونسكو ركيزة أساسية في صون التراث الحيّ. ويأتي برنامــــــج “حِرْفَتي” مثالا واضحًا على ذلك؛ إذ يُعيد قراءة حرفتَي التَّلي والسَّــــــفيفة التقليديّتَيْن من خلال تطبيقــــــات معاصرة، مثل قطع الزينة اليومية والإكسســــــوارات، في تجسيد لفكرة أن الأصالة يمكن أن تتجدّد من دون أن تتبدّد. وتُشير الدراسات إلى أن تقديم الحِرَف للشباب ضمن أطر معاصرة يعزّز ارتباطهم بها ويجعل هذا الارتباط أكثر استدامة على المدى البعيد. ولأن الجيل الجديد نشــــــأ في فضاء رقمي بالكامل، أطلق “إرثي” تطبيق “حِــــــرَف” المجاني، الــــــذي يُتيح التعرّف إلى تقنيــــــات الحِرَف الإماراتية التقليدية بأســــــلوب تفاعلي. فمن خــــــلال دروس تفاعلية خطوة بخطوة في فنون التَّلي والسَّفيفة، يختبر المستخدمون افتراضيًا تقنيات النسج والضفــــــر التي تعود لقرون. وبعد إتمام التصميم على الشاشــــــة، يمكنهم الاســــــتفادة من تقنيــــــة الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد لرؤيــــــة تعليقة زخرفية أو مرشد صفحات يتجسّد أمامهم. ويُســــــتكمل ذلك ببرامج تبادل مهــــــارات عابرة للمنطقة، تربط الحِرَفيّات في الإمارات بنظيراتهن في الأردن وباكســــــتان وفلسطين، حيث تُقارَن التقنيّات، وتُناقَش، وتُوسّع حدودها. ولا يقتصر هذا الحوار الثقافي على حماية الممارسات المهدّدة، بل يعزّز قدرتها على الصمود، ليضمن بقاءها تقاليد حيّة قابلة للتكيّف، لا مجرد قطع ساكنة في واجهات العرض. يتمحــــــور جانــــــب كبيــــــر من عمــــــل “إرثي” حــــــول تمكيــــــن الحِرَفيّات الإماراتيــــــات، اقتصاديًا واجتماعيًا على الســــــواء. لكن ما التحديات البنيويــــــة التي لا تزال النســــــاء في قطاع الحِــــــرَف المحلي يواجهنها، وكيف يعمل المجلس على معالجتها؟ لا تــــــزال الحِرَفيّــــــات في المنطقــــــة يصطدمن بثلاثة عوائــــــق متجذّرة: محدودية الوصول إلى أســــــواق مســــــتقرّة، وضعف الاعتراف بملكيتهن الإبداعية، وقيود اجتماعية تحد من انخراطهن في الشــــــبكات المهنيّة.

مجتمعات حِرَفيّة تتقاطع حكاياتها مع حكايتنا، ونســــــاء نســــــجت تقنياتهن ذاكرة أجيال كاملة، لكن إســــــهاماتهن ظلّت طويلا خارج الضوء. ومن خلال الشّــــــراكات مع مصمّمين دوليّين، ومؤسّســــــات بحثية، ودور حِرَفيّة، ومنصّات عالميّة، وضعنا الحِرَفيّــــــات الإماراتيات إلى جانب نظيراتهن حــــــول العالم في حوار متكافئ. وقد ليؤكّد ما آمنّــــــا به دائمًا: أن هذه الحِرَف 2019 جاء اعتراف اليونســــــكو بالتَّلي عام التراثيّة تحمل وزنًا فكريًا وفنيًا وثقافيًا يستحق حضورًا عالميًا. اليــــــوم، يدور عملنا حول صياغة إرث حيّ، لتغدو الحِرَفيّات قوّة تصوغ مســــــتقبل التراث، لا مجرّد حافظات له، مسلّحات بالمهارات والشبكات والفرص التي تمكّنهن من تحويل حِرَفهن إلى سبل عيش مستدامة ولغات تصميم معترف بها دوليًا. يشــــــكّل إحياء التقنيّات التراثية ومنحها قراءة معاصرة تُخاطب جمهور اليوم محورًا أساسيًا في عمل “إرثي”. لكن كيف يمكن صون هذه التقاليد، وفي الوقت نفسه الدّفع بها نحو آفاق تصميميّة جديدة؟ يبدأ عملنــــــا من التوثيق الدقيق والبحث الإثنوغرافــــــي العميق. فحِرَف مثل التَّلي والسَّفيفة والفروخة ليست مجرد تقنيات تُمارسها الأيدي، بل هي إرث معرفي حي متجــــــذّر فــــــي الذاكرة، وفي حركات اليد، وفي ذكاء المادة نفســــــها. وقبل أي إعادة قــــــراءة أو تأويل، يعمل الفريق عــــــن قرب مع الحِرَفيّات لتوثيــــــق النقوش، وطرق التنفيذ، والمصطلحات، والســــــياق الثقافي، بحيث تُحفَــــــظ كل حِرفة بدقّة بحثية تليق بعمقها. ويُشكّل هذا التوثيق العمود الفقري للأرشيف، كما يرسم المعايير التي تُضبط بها جميع الشراكات اللاّحقة.
Miami, London Design Fair and Milan Design Week, further strengthen this balance. By situating artisans within global con- versations on craft innovation, these collaborations serve as both preservation and progression - allowing heritage to breathe, to adapt and to speak to new audiences while remaining anchored in its original meaning. Can you share a specific craft or tradition that you believe is particularly at risk - and how Irthi is working to protect it? Talli remains among the most endangered craft practices in the UAE, echoing global research that intergenerational transfer is the single greatest predictor of a craft’s survival. Like many hand- based traditions, Talli depends on embodied knowledge - intri- cate hand movements, rhythm, tension control, fibre sensitivity - that cannot be mechanised or replicated digitally. As younger generations pursue new forms of work, these knowledge-sys- tems risk being interrupted or lost entirely. To counter this, Irthi has delivered more than 33 workshops, community programmes and apprenticeship-style trainings that mirror the master-apprentice models UNESCO identifies as es- sential to safeguarding living heritage. Our Hirfati programme, for example, reinterprets traditional Talli and Safeefah through contemporary applications such as lifestyle objects and fashion
accessories, demonstrating relevance without diluting authenticity. Re- search consistently shows that when young people encounter heritage crafts in modern contexts, long-term engagement increases. Recognising that today’s youth are digital natives, Irthi has also launched the free Hiraf app, which enables them to learn about the techniques used in traditional Emirati crafts. Through interactive step-by-step tutorials on Talli and Safeefah, users can gain a virtual experience of centuries-old weaving and braiding techniques. Once they’ve crafted their design on screen, they can avail of 3D printing technology to see their decorative hanging or bookmark come to life. Complementing this, we run cross-regional skills exchange programmes that connect artisans from the UAE with practitioners in Jordan, Pakistan and Palestine, allowing techniques to be compared, debated and expanded. This cross-cultural dialogue not only safeguards endan- gered practices, but strengthens their resilience - ensuring they remain living, adaptive traditions rather than static artefacts. Much of Irthi’s work centres on empowering Emirati women arti- sans, both economically and socially. What structural challenges do women in the local craft sector still face, and how is the Council ad- dressing them? Women artisans across the region continue to face three persistent struc- tural barriers: limited access to stable markets, insufficient recognition of
