The Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Senior ‘A’ Team competition matches will begin in April and continue into the first part of May as needed. Division winners will proceed on to play single elimination quarter, semi-final, and final matches. We need the best senior golfers, age 55 and over, to represent ANCC. Selection criteria for the team matches will be based on 1 April 2018 handicaps (which are expected to be current and accurate). All matches are played at scratch. The Virginia State Golf Association Men’s Regular A-team spring season for Northern Virginia will start in late March/ early April, and the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Regular A-team summer season takes place in July. All matches played at scratch. The 2-day tryouts will be held on Saturday, 10 March and Sunday, 11 March at ARL. At the completion of the 2 tryout rounds, the team roster for Spring 2018 will be set. The ANCC Men’s “B” Team competition begins late April and is a great way to meet other ANCC members and play competitive golf against other clubs in the area. The ‘B’ Team is open to all men with course handicaps ranging from 5 to 16. Matches are held on Saturdays and/or Sundays from late April through July with playoffs going from August through October. Tryouts will be held on Sunday, 8 April at FFX, and on Sunday, 15 April at ARL. Spring Kick-Off Golf Tournament
The Spring Kick-Off Golf Tournament will be held on April 7 at Fairfax. This tournament format is one of the favorite formats of the year. The field is limited to the first 42 teams entered. This event sells out quickly every year! For more information and to enter beginning March 7, click here .
The 2018 golf season will have lots of opportunities for casual rounds of golf and generally one special event/tournament per month. Our first regular play day is Saturday, 7 April, and the first tournament is the Memorial Stableford on Saturday, 28 April. To kick off the CWGO season, those attending opening day luncheon and scramble on Saturday, 31 March will be the first to have an opportunity to sign up for this year’s WWOFO golf trip which will be heading to a new venue this year – the Golden Horseshoe at Colonial Williamsburg. The Spring Kickoff will begin at 11:00 AM at ARL for a social hour followed by lunch and a brief business meeting before we head to the course for a 9-hole scramble. For this event, teams will be assigned, and no handicaps are required. Please click here for additional CWGO updates. We will kickoff the season with our annual Spring Luncheon on Wednesday, 28 March at ARL. We will meet at 11:00 in the Arnold Ballroom for our business meeting and then move to the Nimitz Ballroom for a social period before lunch at noon. Remember also that we will hold our raffle fundraiser, our only such event of the year. We are a group of women who love to play tennis and we play twice weekly during the indoor season, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00 to 2:30 PM. Our sessions are fun, a little competitive and stress-free. Our group provides the maximum freedom in balancing life on and off the court. If a player is unable to play due to vacation, work or another commitment, she does not have to find a substitute. Our group offers the flexibility of playing with less than four players and more than four players, so if you show up you will always play. For more information, please contact the Tennis Pro Shop. With both a business and aquatics background, Wendy is excited to bring her knowledge, expertise, and past experiences to Aquatics at ANCC. We will have opportunities for all abilities with the coaches evaluating swimmers to make sure they are placed in the appropriate group. More information related to swimmer placement and groups will be available soon. On Sunday, 22 April from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, the Annual “Suit Sizing” will occur. Team suits will be available for purchase and pick up from stock on hand. Team shirts, sweatshirts, caps, goggles and an assortment of ANCC apparel will be available for purchase. If stock runs out, we will take orders for pick-up as well. The complete swim team and dive team practice and meet schedules will be posted on the ANCC website soon. For planning purposes, both the swim team and dive team will have afternoon practices starting the week of May 28 until middle of June. We will then switch to morning practices for the remainder of June and July. The season wraps up with our end of season banquet on Friday, 27 July. 10 MARCH 2018 AQUATICS Welcome back Coach ANITA and Coach Ian Anita O’Quinn has enjoyed coaching at ANCC for more than 20 years and has been involved in diving since 1969. She competed in the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL), and continued her diving career at the University of Virginia, where she earned a degree in Education. Anita began coaching after graduating from high school, and continued coaching summer teams and high school teams throughout her 35 year teaching career. She enjoys working with kids of all ages, and loves to see the divers improve year after year. An Army Navy lifer, Ian will begin his 26th year at Army Navy this summer; starting in 1992 as a swimmer, then assistant coach, and now as head coach. He graduated from Gonzaga College HS (‘04) and Washington & Lee University (‘08) playing rugby throughout. When he is not on deck at ANCC, Ian is coaching for The Capitol Sea Devils, where he is Head Coach & Director of Coaching or for Thomas Jefferson HSST boys and girls teams. In his ‘free time’, he teaches Latin and Math at Saint Agnes School in Arlington. He is looking forward to continuing the great traditions of Army Navy swimming while creating some new ones along the way. Beth Bedell grew up swimming year-round in Southern California and swam competitively throughout college. Teaching, coaching, and running swim programs around the world as part of an Army family, Beth settled in Northern Virginia in 2003. Here in Northern Virginia, Beth has coached a Northern Virginia Swim League division 1 swim team, ran coaching and training clinics for area teams, taught private lessons, coached for a number of club teams and started her own swim program, Swim with Beth. Though Beth has broad experience coaching children of every age, she has principally focused her coaching on developing young swimmers’ strokes to ensure they are efficient and effective. Beth is excited to join the ANCC staff and bring her experience to the Junior Swim Team. Her goal is to bring quality instruction and the joy of aquatics to our young swimmers. The program is only open to NEW Members. • 1.5 of Resident Monthly Dues • $200.00 per month of Dues applied to participant’s account if he/she joins ANCC at end of his/her Trial Membership as a Resident Member • Initiation Fee locked in at rate when participant starts the program • Full Dining, Tennis, Fitness and Swim Privileges, Golf Privileges (May golf anytime except before 11:00 AM on Saturday mornings) • $50.00/month Food & Beverage Minimum Trial Membership - Be An ANCC Ambassador - Word of Mouth Referral is the best way to bring new Members to the Club! Click here for more information D olley M adison J unior H igh S chool The Dolley Madison Tower located along White #6 at Arlington is constructed on 4.91 acres once owned by ANCC. The property was transferred to the Arlington County School System in 1945 for use as a junior high school. The Dolley Madison Junior High School was subsequently constructed and opened, but was closed in 1953 and sold to developers who built the apartment building. The ANCC “Historical Review, 1924-1989 (page 42) characterized ANCC’s sale as a “transaction not favorable to ANCC”. While this transaction certainly was not favorable, it was not as one-sided as the “Historical Review” would lead one to believe. To read more, click here .
