Diamondback Corrugated Container Invests For Growth BY DAN BRUNTON Located in one of the largest cities in Texas – San Antonio – Diamond- back Corrugated Container LLC is one of those great stories of a fresh start-up by a guy with plenty of industry experience and the hunger to leave a stable job and set up his own business. Founded in July 2016, the company is run by John J. Bradley Jr, who boasts a CV including some of the industry’s leading names – PCA, Temple Inland and Bates Container. Bradley set up the business with three other partners, who include John and Paul McLeod of Lone Star Corrugated.

SupplyOne Acquires Bacon & Graham Of Paterson, NJ Newtown Square, Pennsylvania based Sup- plyOne, Inc., one of the largest independent suppliers of corrugated and other value-add- ed packaging products, equipment, and ser- vices in North America, announced that it has acquired Bacon & Graham, a packaging and facility supplies distributor in Paterson, New Jersey. Founded in 1939, Bacon & Graham suc- cessfully evolved over decades of business from its original focus in the silk industry to a full-service packaging distributor. Bacon & Graham offers traditional packaging products, including corrugated boxes, stretch wrap and tape as well as automation equipment. Its key customer segments include food, industrial products and building products in the tri-state area. “In servicing our growing northeast busi- ness, we have been impressed with Bacon & Graham’s strategic customer approach,” said Todd Renehan, President and CEO of Supply- One. “The ability to understand customers’ business needs is a key differentiating factor of SupplyOne, and Bacon & Graham has also approached their business with this innova-

His background in corrugated goes way back though – Bradley had worked at his grandfather’s business, Accardi Corrugated Box in Phil- adelphia, where he worked in the summers while at school, learning about boxes, people, and how to take care of customers and employ- ees. He moved to San Antonio in 1992, where he joined Bates Con- tainer. So where does the name come from? “Well, John and I quite liked the idea of a snake within our logo and of course, the Diamondback is indigenous for this area,” recounts Bradley. An image of the famous snake is intertwined within their box certification logo, something that quickly shows the user where their corrugated box came from, in the heart of Texas. Early Growth As you would expect of a company run by people who really live CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 Diamondback Corrugated Container invested in a new Apstar HG2 flexo ro- tary die cutter supplied by the Haire Group last fall.

Baldwin Adds Sales Resources, Expands Manufacturing Capabilities St. Louis, Missouri based Baldwin Technology Co. Inc. an- nounced additions to its America sales team and expan- sion of LED-UV and IR manufacturing capabilities at its fa- cilities in River Falls, Wisconsin and Easton, Pennsylvania. Baldwin is a global manufacturer and supplier of pro- cess-automation equipment, parts, service and consum- ables for the printing, packaging, textile, plastic film extru- sion, corrugated and industrial industries. The extensive product portfolio includes equipment that helps drive au- tomation, quality, and productivity – including inspection, color management and registration, cleaning systems, surface treatment, spray dampening, and LED-UV curing and drying. Fueling funding for the strategic investments is Bald- win’s recent integration into BW Converting, a strategic alliance of resources and services that bring together six Barry-Wehmiller companies. Along with Baldwin, they include Paper Machine Converting Co. (PCMC), Win- kler+Dünnebier (W+D), STAX Technologies, Hudson-Sharp and Northern Engraving and Machine. To support the growth of the business and increased demand in narrow web, packaging and corrugated mar- kets, Baldwin added two new equipment sales leaders in January.

In addition to the recent additions to the sales team, Baldwin’s U.S. based manufacturing capabilities continue to grow. Chicago TAPPI Again Hosts What’s New In Corrugated

• Dave Swedes of Valco Melton, who presented Clear- vision Printcheck, which inspects the integrity and ac- curacy of printing and registration on rotary die-cutters and flexo folder-gluers.

The Chicago TAPPI Local Section once again hosted its popular What’s New in Corrugated Event on February 6 at the Oak Brook Marriott in Oak Brook, Illinois. What’s New offered more than 75 attendees an exclusive venue in which to learn about new technologies, products, and ser- vices in an intimate and relaxed environment. The enlight- ening and informative event was open to all converters and suppliers with topics focusing on emerging technolo- gy and operational offerings in the corrugated industry in North America and around the world. The program began with a social hour featuring an open bar and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a delicious buf- fet dinner and a series of eight-minute knowledge-packed presentations that included: • Spencer Bird of JB Machinery, who presented JB’s Auto Dryer Control (ADC), a new feature of the Color Dry XL30 IR Dryers that eliminates over-consumption of energy due to over-powering IR drying systems. ADC helps to eliminate guesswork in selecting proper power settings for optimum drying efficiency. • Dylan Baker-Flynn of Geo M. Martin, who presented Smart Shingle, which allows operators to reduce or eliminate feed interrupt time at stack change on rotary dies cutters running up to 15,000 sheets/hr.

• Ryan Clark of Kolbus America, who presented BX Mo- tion, an all-in-one, heavy-duty short-run box maker for box plants looking to expand capabilitiesthroughput. • Chuck Slingerland of Barberan S.A./FujiFilm, who pre- sented the HS6000, a single-pass digital printer devel- oped for retail packaging, display, and signage markets that previously relied on multi-pass devices for high- end graphic reproduction. The presenters at Chicago TAPPI’s What’s New Event were, from left, Chuck Slingerland of Barberan S.A./FujiFilm, Ryan Clark of Kolbus America, Dave Swedes of Valco Melton, Dylan Baker-Flynn of Geo M. Martin, Spencer Bird of JB Machinery and moderator Ed Stuczynski of Menasha Packaging.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

With a three color MWU flexo folder gluer, three col- or S&S FFG and a two-color Langston Saturn II FFG, the company has utilized used equipment to get itself where it is today. “We are not about fancy graphics just yet, we are about making good quality single-, two- and three-color boxes for customers that we service within about 100 miles of our facility,” adds Bradley. “With a fleet of our own small format trucks, we can deliver rapidly from stock if necessary, keeping our cus- tomers well serviced. Texas is a massive state to service, so we decided to concentrate on customers within a close proximity, rather than try and spread our net too thin. “In addition to this, all sales are handled by me and my daughter – Madison – and being a true independent, of course we both undertake additional functions in the busi- ness as well.” Focusing on producing packaging for the food and drink sector, as well as the medical industry, the company employs 21 people and operates from an 80,000-square- foot facility. Annual sales are expected to reach $12 million in 2024. New Equipment Added In the Fall of 2023, the company took delivery and startup of a new Apstar HG2 1632 flexo rotary die-cutter. We have become well known for getting cus- tomers out of a jam when they need packaging real fast – and as a result, those customers stick with us.
