An acknowledgment of parental au thority is required. Blessing is prom ised for children’s obedience. This applies also to the spiritual family ovér which. God the Father exercises discipline and to which He gives His blessing for compliance with His will. The. dignity and value of human life are safeguarded with strict prohibi tions against murder and adultery (vs. 13, 14). Finally, neighbors’ rights and property must be respected. A neighbor is one’s fellow man where- ever he may be found, whoever he may. be, and in whatever circum stances he may be situated. (Gf. Luke 10:24-37.) Under the law, the rule is, “Thou must not do harm to thy neigh bor” ; under grace, it is, “Thou must do good to thy neighbor.” Points and Problems 1. “And God spake all these words" (Ex. 20:1). This statement is a clear and emphatic testimony to the divine inspiration of the Scriptures. God has spoken. The reference is particularly to the Decalogue, which immediately follows, but certainly is not to be lim ited to that. We are assured that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Tim. 3:16). Since God spake “ all these, words,” there is no possi bility of any error in them;' there is no room for human speculation. And since inspiration extends to the very words of Scripture, we can be sure of a full and exact revelation. ' 2. “I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land , of Egypt, out of the house of bondage" (Ex. 20:2). This is the essential back ground for the giving of the Ten Com mandments. The Lord had redeemed His people. Bondage in Egypt was a thing of the past. Now He gives them the law.,This order should be kept in mind. First, there must be redemption, then the, law., The law was never given by God to show His people how to be saved. But after He had saved them, He who alone fully understands the human heart, and knows What is best for His own, revealed to them how they ought to live. The order is the same in this dispensation. First, God saves us by His Gospel. Then, He shows us through much teaching and exhortation, how we ought to walk. 3. “1 the Lord thy God am a jealous God" (Ex. 20:5). This means that God was , careful that His own honor should be maintained, and that the welfar.e of His people should be real ized. .This twofold purpose is behind the whole Decalogue. Through it He reveals Himself and shows thé place He deserves to hold In the hearts of His people. By the law, He instructs them in the way of life which will bring about their greatest good and happiness. God is jealous that these ends shall be realized.
