10 Your Life, Your Way... All the Way You can define and shape

Dear Friend,

You, our amazing donors, make it possible for The Elizabeth Hospice to provide compassionate solutions to complex problems brought on by advanced illness. Your support enables us to comfort and counsel our patients and their families during challenging times, and to restore hope to grieving children and adults when they feel lost and alone. Because of you, we are able to give families the precious gift of meaningful moments with their loved ones. Our community-centered care plays an important role in healthcare especially during these times of shrinking reimbursement and rigorous regulatory oversight. Since 1978, The Elizabeth Hospice has had the privilege of making a difference in the lives of more than 95,000 people. Patients and their families are treated with grace, dignity and respect and are guided through life’s most difficult transition by our experienced, compassionate team of experts. Those in the community who are grieving, no matter what their patient affiliation, have a professional resource to help restore hope and foster emotional healing. There are 11 school districts in San Diego County and the Inland Empire that have a resource for training their professional staff to support bereaved children without impacting their already tight budgets. All of this is possible because of your generous support. This report highlights the achievements of our caregivers, staff and volunteers during 2016. We couldn’t do it without you. Thank you for trusting us with your investment in the community. 8 6 4 Every Minute is Truly a Treasure By Beverly Marston MEMORABLE MOMENTS 5 Conversation Starter Kit Makes Life Easier By Marlene A. Community with Heart

The driving force behind our compassionate care is that patient focus includes a commitment to caring for family and all those in the community who are grieving.

Proudly caring for those who have served our nation Veterans often carry experiences that present unique challenges at the end of life. Our staff is trained to better assist Veterans and understand their challenges. As a Level 4 partner in We Honor Veterans , a national initiative by the Veterans Administration and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, we had the distinct honor of conducting pinning ceremonies and providing hospice for 575 Veterans .

Our care extends beyond our patients to include their family and friends, too. Community-centered grief support is open to everyone regardless of patient affiliation or how their loved one died. Those who are grieving find solace and hope in an environment where they can speak freely and without judgment. Counseling and peer support groups are available for all ages. Last year, our counseling services touched the lives of 6,117 people . No one should ever have to grieve alone

Community with Heart

This life-changing care is ONLY possible through gifts like yours – 94% of the funding for these programs comes from generous donations by members of our community.

Specialized grief care for children

Pawsitive Pet Connect was launched this year to assist hospice patients with their pets because pets provide companionship and unconditional love that can be key to a patient’s quality of life. A team of trained volunteers is ready to assist patients by feeding and exercising their pet, delivering food and other pet items, and transporting animals to veterinary or grooming appointments, as needed or when requested. Pets can be critical to the well-being of patients

Losing a loved one is painful at any age. For children, it can be especially devastating with lifetime consequences. Through our comprehensive Children’s Bereavement Program, kids connect with their peers who have had a similar experience and share a common bond. Caregivers build a support network that helps them during difficult times, and schools have a resource for training and assistance with grieving students. Last year, 290 children and 42 adult caregivers participated in 1,282 grief counseling sessions .

Volunteers

Passionate people who make our work possible

Volunteers lend a hand to enhance every facet of our organization. Whether working directly with patients, helping within our other programs or advocating in the community as ambassadors of our work, the compassion of our volunteers has tremendous impact on enhancing the lives of everyone we serve. We are fortunate to have 287 volunteers who contributed 13,423 hours last year to enriching the lives of those who are faced with the challenges of advanced illness.

It’s not unusual to find a volunteer comforting a patient, keeping a patient company by reading to them, or reassuring a grieving child. Volunteers give generously of their time and talent to: • Bring music to our patients • Create one-of-a-kind Cuddle Keepsakes for those who are grieving • Make our fundraising events special • Provide aromatherapy • And so much more
