CalBox’s John Widera Publishes Book: ‘Competing With Sharks’ BY LEN PRAZYCH John Widera, Chairman of Santa Fe Springs based CalBox Group, has published his latest and most comprehensive book, “Competing with Corporate Sharks in a Crisis: Principles & Practices for Small and Mid- size Businesses.” Widera has published three previous books on the corrugated in- dustry and this fourth one condenses the experience and knowledge acquired over more than five decades into a concise, entertaining and

Rand-Whitney Opens New Packaging Plant In MA Worcester, Massachusetts based Rand-Whit- ney cut the ribbon on its new, 384,000-square- foot packaging facility in Boylston during a ceremony on May 18 attended by New En- gland Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Gov. Maura Healey, according to media reports. Rand-Whitney said the the new packaging facility will give them increased capabilities that will allow them to provide more efficient service and lead times delivered through state-of-the-art machinery and a first-class manufacturing team. The facility represents Rand-Whitney's latest investment in equipment and capacity to meet the significant growth in demand for packaging that was accelerated by the Covid pandemic. The new packaging facility will have the potential to manufacture 300 million boxes annually. Rand-Whitney is one of several companies owned by Patriots’ Owner Robert Kraft and is the largest independent corrugated packag- ing manufacturer in New England with areas of expertise in cost-saving package re-engi- neering and lean manufacturing programs. Speaking at the event, Kraft described the

information-packed 200+ page volume that should be required reading for novices who have committed to a career in the industry as well as executives and owners of companies who have been in the industry for decades and think they have nothing left to learn. Widera shares the lessons that have empowered him to build and lead, along with his son, Chris Widera, CEO & Pres- ident of CalBox Group, a West Coast and Southwest box mak- ing conglomerate: California Box in Santa Fe Springs, Cali-

fornia; California Box II in Rancho Cucamonga, California; CB Sheets in Santa Fe Springs, California; Tucson Container in Tucson, Arizona; Kino Packaging in Tucson, Arizona; Kino Foam and Crating in Tucson, Arizona; Arizona Corrugated in Mesa, Arizona; and West Texas Con- tainer in El Paso, Texas. He puts his money not where his mouth is but where it will provide the best return on his investments in box plants and more importantly, the people he employs, many of them for de- cades, in those plants. As an annual contributor to BCN’s Converter Outlook, readers of Widera’s wisdom, insights and opinions will recognize his literary and authoritative voice as one worthy of hearing. The very first page invites his reader in humbly and gently: “This book is a quiet voice, barely au- dible in the clamor of relentless persuasion, urging you the reader to consider the real quality, relevance and longevity of ‘brain candy’ and things acquired over a lifetime.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

new facility as the most modern plant in America, the best and the most efficient. Other dignitaries attending included Massachu- setts Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao, state Senator Robyn Kennedy, and state Representative Meghan Kilcoyne. Also open for business is a 300,000 square foot ware- house Rand-Whitney built adjacent to its new plant which will be used for storage by an affiliate, Sutton, Massachu- setts based UN1F1ED² Global Packaging Group, which specializes in foam, wood, molded fiber and corrugated packaging.

Operating in Massachusetts since 1938, Rand-Whitney chose to build the facility in Boylston due to its proximity to major transportation corridors and access to a skilled workforce. The new plant is only 15 minutes away from their main facility in Worcester which Rand-Whitney CEO Nick Smith said was a huge advantage, a news report said. The state-of-the-art sustainable facility features energy efficiencies and the industry’s most efficient robotics and automation equipment. As one of the leaders in environmental responsibility for the packing industry, Rand-Whitney’s vertical integra- tion will allow the facility to manufacture packaging that uses a very high percentage of post-consumer waste, using 100 percent post-consumer waste linerboard pro- duced in the company’s mill in Connecticut. The compa- ny also produces and ships corrugated displays, shipping containers and folding cartons to a variety of industrial and consumer end-users. The Boylston facility was designed by PROCON, Inc. of Manchester, New Hampshire. This represents Rand-Whit- ney's fourth collaboration with the architectural and con- struction management firm, previously partnering with them on facilities in Worcester; Dover, New Hampshire; and Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Rand-Whitney celebrates the opening of its new packaging plant in Boylston, Massachusetts in a ribbon cutting ceremony with attendees including Robert and Jonathan Kraft and Gov. Maura Healey.

Deadline Set For North American Paperboard Packaging Competition The June 1 deadline is approaching for carton manufactur- ers to enter the 80th North American Paperboard Packag- ing Competition, considered by many to be the “Oscars” of the paperboard industry.

sors, the North American Paperboard Packaging Compe- tition is the premier competition for carton manufacturers involved in the concept, design, print, performance, and shelf appeal of paperboard packaging. Entries come from both major corporations as well as small, family-owned box shops yet all are weighted evenly, with the names of manufacturers unknown to the jury. All entries submitted will be automatically considered in the General award category. Award categories include digital application, innovation, and sustainability. All pack- ages must have been sold commercially. A panel of industry experts travels to PPC headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts to spend three days of judg- ing each year’s entries. Each entry is scored for concept, design and user experience; converting; and distribution, fulfillment and retail. The entry fee is $249 per package. Entries not paid for by June 30 will not be eligible to participate. All entries must be submitted by a current PPC member company. In addition to an entry writeup, contestants need to send at least two assembled cartons (one with a product if not perishable) and at least two flats of very size. Mail entries to the Paperboard Packaging Council, Attn: Emilia Janik, 1350 Main Street, Suite 1100, Springfield, MA 01103. The overhang testing with a single box used eight levels ranging from 0-3” overhang on the short, long, and adjacent sides and tested 1,680 boxes. Two overhang levels of 0 and 1” were tested with the complete layers of boxes. The testing indicated that box strength decreased with increasing overhang, as expected. Litho Press Invests In Large Format Koenig & Bauer Rapida 145 Press Litho Press, one of the country’s leading litho labels and litho laminate sheet producers, announced investing in the first new-generation Koenig & Bauer Rapida 145 57- inch six-color plus coater presses in North America. “Just like the high-performance cars that race around the track, we were seeking a new press that would give us the speed, precision, and control that our corrugated packaging and point-of-purchase customers demand,” said Bernie Lacy, president of Litho Press. “Color consis- tency and speedy turn times are the main driving forces for our clients. The new Rapida 145 press is delivering and winning the race for us.” Since its installation less than six months ago, Litho Press has seen an increase in capacity — more than 25 percent — and is able to schedule its litho label and litho lam sheets on two current shifts with the goal of three shifts as sales continue to grow. Most impressive have been reduced makeready times, less waste, and higher run speeds. With advanced automation and workflow solu- tions, the firm has been exceeding its clients’ demanding schedules and reducing turnaround time in the record-set- ting time of one to two days. Features include the inline Koenig & Bauer QualiTronic ColorControl quality measurement and control system to

ensure consistent print quality. As a certified G7 Master Printer, Litho Press is dedicated to delivering the highest color management for its clients’ products. Its proofing systems and presses are calibrated for optimal quality control to provide consistent, accurate color from proof to print. The new Rapida 145 accepts unbent plates, which eliminates an extra step in pre-press.

“We have seen first-hand how Koenig & Bauer is com- mitted to delivering the highest quality printing solutions and expert customer support,” Lacy said. “Our innovative new press model from Koenig & Bauer is helping our com- pany produce the finest print jobs for our clients for years to come. Our management team carefully chose Koenig & Bauer for its high level of quality, service, and expert build quality. They’ve been extremely responsive to our needs. We’re proud to be operating the first-of-its-kind in North America.”

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Acme Corrugated Box Invests in GBM K1-X Jumbo Flexo Converter Hatboro, Pennsylvania based Acme Corrugated Box an- nounced an investment in Global Boxmachine’s K1-X Jum- bo Flexo Converter after reviewing jumbo converter op- tions worldwide over the past five years. On the forefront of industry standards, the K1-X offers heavy-duty electronic and OEM components capable of running 4,800 sheets per hour. Its standardized fully-auto- mated system has cut Acme Corrugated Box project setup time by 75 percent. K1-X’s other differentiator was its printing and die cut- ting capabilities as compared to its Serenco jumbo con- verter, an addition from the early 2000s. “The Serenco had one printer and no ability to die cut. The K1-X offers die cutting capabilities and two printers – another win for efficiency and end results for clients,” said Ryan Stashko, Manufacturing Services Supervisor Project Manager at Acme Corrugated Box. Acme Corrugated Box’s decision to go with the K1-X was also based on turn-around. Its distributor, Illinois-based Global Boxmachine, LLC – one of the leading distributors of corrugated box mak- ing and converting equipment – could deliver the K1-X to Acme Corrugated Box in less than a year, much sooner than the two-year lead times offered by most others. The K1-X arrived at Acme Corrugated Box’s recently expanded Pennsylvania facility in late February. In early March, the Serenco was decommissioned. “Whenever we decommission longstanding equip- ment, we keep a few samples from its last order run,” Stas- hko says. “The Serenco was no exception. We’ll frame and display them alongside the others.” Removal of the Serenco took about a week. K1-X’s in- stallation on the same spot on the plant floor followed over the next three weeks. During this timeframe, Acme Cor- rugated Box partnered with other box suppliers to assist. “One of our goals, which we accomplished, was to keep the window of time between jumbos as short as pos- sible. Thanks to our partners, we minimized disruption to our customers,” Stashko said. The new K1-X Jumbo Flexo Converter is now complete- ly assembled – and has a nickname. “We’re only a few months from introducing another new piece of equipment – a converter for traditionally-sized boxes, called the Falcon,” Stashko says. “Our team decided to stick with the aviary theme and call the K1-X the Osprey. Ospreys, after all, are the larger of the two birds and the K1-X produces the largest boxes.” The K1-X “Osprey” is the eighth piece of converting equipment in Acme Corrugated Box’s 320,000 square foot facility. The Falcon, joining this fall to accommodate growing order volume, will be the ninth. For more information, visit acmebox.com .

On the topic of Entrepreneurs in the Tech Trenches (page 16), Widera expounds on the cliché, “In the future, you’ll only need a person and a dog to run a ‘lights out’ factory: the dog to make sure the slumbering person ob- serves but doesn’t touch anything and that person to feed the savvy dog.” On Collaboration Versus Competition (page 60), he opens with the line, “Competition is a lot like cod liver oil. First it makes you sick. Then it makes you better.” You’ll have to read the rest of the piece to understand that the future of “old guard” organizations depends on their abil-

His preface says that he and his son “think like master carpet weavers, interlacing many business loose ends into a rich tapestry that improves karma and the exceptional VALUES of endless troves of products entrepreneurs pro- vide.” The success of CalBox Group and the “tapestry” it has

woven makes it difficult to present a defensible argument to the con- trary. Widera’s emphasis on the en- trepreneurial spirit is indeed woven throughout the short yet compelling “chapters” as foundational to finan- cial success in the corrugated in- dustry and for that matter, any other industry.

ity to find a dazzling array of ways to compete. Adds John’s son Chris, “The CalBox Groups’ associates are focused on the future, but not a blind eye to ostensibly squashing compe- tition of the past.” On the topic of Pricing Decisions (page 84), Widera writes, “When the will of the price setter comes in con-

“Competing with Corporate Sharks in a Crisis” is divid- ed into three major distinct sections – Principles, Manage- ment, and Best Practices – and each of the three is divided into several subsections (mini-lessons) covering the many facets of running a successful corrugated box business. Colorful and visually appealing, virtually every section con- tains visual imagery and illustrations that enlighten, edu- cate and entertain the reader. There is no way to give away too much of the book’s “guts” in this short article to render it unreadable, so a few “teasers” should serve to wet the thirsty palate. the integrateds – and the minnows, the smaller “indepen- dent” fish. He identifies the ways in which big organizations have tried to achieve the “entrepreneurial equivalence of smallness” and concludes with the notion that this type of organization requires enormous tolerance, saying “Most of them behave as loosely coupled systems in which func- tional units often have little desire to integrate their activity with one another. Here, capitalism without a future bank- ruptcy is like a religion without hell.” Widera shares the fact that his provocative book, “Com- peting with Corporate Sharks in a Crisis: Principles & Prac- tices for Small and Midsize Businesses,” was completely rewritten and reorganized over a period of many years – the book is, in fact the 3rd edition – and includes the les- sons learned and knowledge used to “survive the sharks”

despite the economic turmoil created by the tsunami-like waves of the pandemic. From dealing with inflation to unstable employment to government action (or inaction), Widera’s timely and compelling contribution only reinforc- es CalBox Group’s culture of “On Time With Quality – No Excuses!” and will no doubt benefit entrepreneurial box makers new and old for a generation or two to come. Suffice it to say that this curious entrepreneurial box maker and reader will want to have his or her highlighter handy as they navigate their way through Widera’s trove of teachings. An extensive Appendix is longer and more thor- ough than one might expect, but there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s simply adding a greater ROI, especially the last page of text, the one that reveals a 9-question inter- view with John W. Widera, Entrepreneur and Co-founder. He reveals his management style: “Treat people the way you want to be treated.” As for his hobbies, we discover that he likes sports, stamp collecting, antiques, travel and writing. Who knew? For the answers to the remaining questions, including “What are your biggest threats to the corrugated box in- dustry?” and “What was the best and worst advice you ever got?” you will have to get the book and read it for yourself. (CO2) from the atmosphere, and with the help of radiant energy from the sun convert that CO2 into tree fiber called biomass. As trees grow, they continue to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it as biomass until they die, decay or are burned, at which time the CO2 simply returns to the atmosphere in a natural carbon cycle. This “biogen- ic” carbon cycle remains in balance and no net carbon is added to the atmosphere as long as forest carbon stocks – the carbon stored in forest biomass – remain stable or increase. The biogenic carbon cycle concept is central to glob- ally recognized greenhouse gas inventory and account- ing protocols, including the IPCC’s Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. As stated in the IPCC’s 4th

Assessment Report, “In the long-term, a sustainable forest management strategy aimed at maintaining or increasing forest carbon stocks, while producing an annual sustained yield of timber, wood fiber or energy from the forest, will generate the largest sustained [climate change] mitigation benefit.” Are forest stocks in the United States growing? The answer is a resounding “yes,” thanks in great part to the sustainable forestry practices and forest certification ad- vocated by the paper industry. The U.S. Forest Service re- ports that U.S forests grow approximately two times more tree volume than is harvested each year, with net average annual growing forest stock of about 25 billion cubic feet. Keeping The Carbon Cycle In Balance It’s not unusual for anti-paper activist fundraising cam- paigns to include photos of a recently harvested plot of forestland, claiming that such harvests have “devastating climate impacts” because it takes decades for replanted or naturally regenerated trees to grow back and replace the carbon that was removed during harvest. While this type of chicanery may be successful in rais- ing money from unwitting individuals and corporations, it ignores the science and economics of sustainable forest management. In the real world, a balanced biogenic carbon cycle is measured across large spatial landscapes and aver- aged over time, not as a one-time snapshot of a single
