John
Hello Club Members, Recently, I was looking at a new series of Precious Moments figurines coming out this fall. They are representative of five different decades – 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s – and it gave me pause. I began thinking about how so many companies have come and gone over the years. I couldn’t help reflecting on what a blessing it is that Precious Moments has continued to be successful while remaining committed to our core values for more than four and a half decades. While we continually develop new figurine ideas and gift designs, we have always been focused on sharing love with the world. Whether you discovered Precious Moments in the 1970s or just this year, I am so glad you are here. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of collectors and Club Members like you. Know that we constantly strive to bring you figurines and gifts that you can relate to, cherish, and feel good about giving. On that note, in this issue of MOMENTS Magazine you will see a sneak peek of special holiday items to enjoy and give this upcoming holiday season. M eet Sheila C.! Some people casually collect a few Precious Moments gifts here and there and
appreciate the special events, milestones, or
sentiments they represent. A rare few others collect so many that they construct an entire building to house their collection! Sheila C. from Iowa joyfully falls in the latter category. Sheila has been a Club Member on and off over the last couple of decades. HER PRECIOUS MOMENTS JOURNEY BEGAN WHEN SHE WAS MARRIED IN 1993 AND CHOSE A PRECIOUS MOMENTS CAKE TOPPER. It was her very first, and one of her most meaningful figurines. Since then, her collection has grown exponentially! In the beginning, most of her figurines came from gifts shops. Today she enjoys the “hunt”, exploring thrift stores, antique malls, and online sites in search of hard to find collectibles. Her collection has grown to somewhere around 3,500 pieces including figurines, dolls, plates, bells, and pretty much everything else Precious Moments related. After housing the collection in the spare rooms in her home, Sheila decided it needed a home of its own. “When the kids moved out, the Precious Moments really moved in,” she jokes. Plans were soon underway for a building, or “museum”, on her property.

The result is a 36' x 36' building with four windows to allow for natural light. In her personal Precious Moments museum, Sheila displays her collection all together instead of spread out in extra rooms of her home. It has become a serene place for her, and she loves when her 5-year-old granddaughter, Emma, helps care for the collection. When asked if she has an especially meaningful figurine, Sheila didn’t take long to consider her answer before responding, “the 9-inch figurine that came out in 1994, the year my son was born. The number on it was ‘’73’ the year I was born!” Sheila enjoys her museum display of Happy Trip , highlighting the different stages of the process of a figurine coming into being. She also really likes her Disney Masterpiece figurines and is hoping to add the Sleeping Beauty figurine, Love Conquers All , to her collection in the future. Sheila was first drawn to Precious Moments because of the inspiration behind
it, and she still appreciates that today. “AFTER 30 YEARS OF COLLECTING, PRECIOUS MOMENTS STILL JUST MAKES ME HAPPY,” SHE EXPLAINS. “THERE’S A FIGURINE FOR LITERALLY EVERYTHING. ANY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE, YOU CAN FIND A FIGURINE TO CELEBRATE IT.”
The sense of community she has gained is also notable. She has discovered the joy of the Precious Moments Family Reunion held in Carthage, MO at the Precious Moments Chapel. “Through collecting Precious Moments I’ve met so many nice people, especially more recently at the reunions,” she says. “The last two years I was able to meet and visit with Sam Butcher, and that was one of my bucket list items! I got photos with him, and it’s true that his smile is contagious. I surely will be going to the next one and can’t wait to meet more people.”

Sheila’s husband, Matt, accompanies her on her trips to Carthage. Matt is supportive and is glad it brings her joy. We asked Matt how he feels about Sheila’s collection. “I have my own collection of tractor memorabilia, so we understand each other. I enjoy when she gets excited about finding a rare piece. It’s great that we have a mutual understanding of being passionate about what we collect,” Matt says. We want to thank Sheila for speaking with us and for being such a loyal Precious Moments collector over the years. We look forward to seeing her at the annual Family Reunion Event October 10 – 12, 2024. ■

Get To Know Our Precious Moments Family Sarah Wells I live in Webb City, MO, about 10 miles from our Precious Moments facility in Carthage. I have a Bachelor of Science, Secondary Education and
a Master’s of Science in Human Resource Management. I was married to my sweetheart, Matt, for nearly 29 years before becoming a widow in 2021. My daughter, Hannah, a college sophomore is 20, and my son, Luke, is 15 and a high school freshman. Our household includes a 7 year-old spoiled and sweet beagle mix named Daisy and 1 year-old cat named Wally who thinks he is a king and we are all servants to do his bidding.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR PRECIOUS MOMENTS? It will be 35 years at the end of May. I like to tell people I started working here when I was 5! WHAT DO YOU DO AT PRECIOUS MOMENTS? My job title is Director of Human Resources and Customer Service. I manage all of the HR, payroll, benefits, etc.; pretty much anything to do with employees. I also provide oversight to the customer service department, but we have such an excellent customer service team, that there is not much for me to do there! WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING AT PRECIOUS MOMENTS? I love the people that I work with! We are small, but mighty! I’m always impressed by the volume of quality work we can produce with our small team. We’re not perfect, but we learn from our mistakes and from each other and are always looking for ways to improve or be more efficient. Having worked here for so long, the people that I work with have supported me through every personal life event, from celebrating important milestones to grieving great losses. I have
lifelong friends from my time here. I also really appreciate the Butcher family. They have been supportive and kind to me in so many instances and provided opportunities for me to grow in my education and career. They’re good people! WHAT’S A DAY IN YOUR LIFE WORKING AT PRECIOUS MOMENTS? Never boring! One of the things I like most about my work is that it is rarely the same thing two days in a row. I have routine things, like payroll processing or benefits reconciliation, that I am responsible for, but I also have the opportunity to be part of new projects and provide my thoughts and input on things outside of my areas of responsibility. IT’S YOUR DAY OFF, WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR FUN? I like to shop, probably more than I should, and I am always in the middle of a book. I have been blessed with two smart and fun-loving kids. I genuinely enjoy spending time with them and their friends. We often go on adventures! My daughter and I especially like to go to concerts together. Thank you so much to everyone who made the 2023 Family Reunion Event last October such a phenomenal success! Our biggest Precious Moments fans traveled to Carthage, MO to take
part in the annual event “Teamwork Makes The Dream Work”. Full Packet attendees received the exclusive event figurine with the same name pre-signed by Deb Butcher and Master Sculptor, Hiko Maeda who were also present as on-site VIPs. In addition to the usual delicious food and feel- good fellowship, so many fun activities took place! Attendees were able to witness the breaking of the mold for Dance Like No One Is Watching #212009 (a limited number are available through the Precious Moments Chapel Gift Shoppe and PreciousMoments.com). Guests also took part in the launch of Deb Butcher’s “Rawwr Panda” t-shirts and accessories line and were treated to an exclusive new Chapel tour with Chapel Director, Joette Blades when she shared stories and memories from working with Mr. Butcher.

Entertainment was provided by the ever-popular Duke Mason Band, and mentalist Doug Anderson had everyone in awe. Of course, there were shopping opportunities! Guests experienced the new Shop & Play location where they could play games to win Precious Moments prizes, and peruse hard-to-find secondary market merchandise. In addition, creative classes were available. Some attendees opted to Paint A Figurine with Deb Butcher, while others participated in Make A Doll with The Doll Maker, Linda Rick, and complete a wood craft with our friends from Wood Be Blessed. There were also trivia games, a koi fish naming contest (thanks, Robert for naming Nemo!) and baskets of donated licensed merchandise for raffles. Guests braved the chilly early morning October weather to participate in our group photo with Mr. Butcher, too!

In the summertime, we love to go to theme parks (Silver Dollar City in Branson is a favorite) and hanging out with friends at the creek. WHAT’S THE FIRST CONCERT YOU EVER ATTENDED? I’m dating myself here…I was thrilled when I found out that Rick Springfield was coming to Joplin, MO, and ecstatic when my mom agreed to take me. I think I was around 10 years old. I still love Jessie’s Girl. IF YOU HAD TO EAT ONE MEAL EVERY DAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I am not a picky eater, so it could be just about anything, but I particularly love sweets. I could eat ice cream every day. ARE ANY OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS PRECIOUS MOMENTS COLLECTORS? My mom loved Precious Moments and I loved being able to get her special figurines, often signed by Mr. Butcher.
IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD IT BE? Right here! I love traveling and experiencing new places, but I enjoy living in southwest Missouri. I grew up here and wanted my kids to go to school here. We have a low cost of living, it’s safe, and we get all four seasons, sometimes all in the same day! I still have a million places on my future travel list but this area is home. WHAT WOULD YOU SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT? Hmm…I’m not much of a singer, but it would probably be something from my big-hair 80’s era – maybe some classic Bon Jovi or Journey. ■

Among many other things, I oversee the warehouse, including shipping, receiving, and inventory. WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING AT PRECIOUS MOMENTS? I love the company’s overall message of loving, caring, and sharing and the relationships built with customers, workers, and owners. WHAT’S A DAY IN YOUR LIFE WORKING AT PRECIOUS MOMENTS? That is what is unique about Precious Moments. I may be picking or shipping orders one minute, changing light bulbs the next, helping with grounds I have a beautiful wife, Tabitha, and four children, ages 37 to 17. Daniel, Haylee, Donald, and Tanner, plus our seven grandchildren, Emerson, Thea, Cal, Sophia, Maverick, Jax, and Nova keep us all plenty busy!
