dance floor. A string and bass orchestra, the Valentines, played dinner and dance music to the merriment of its passengers. Sadly, the Peerless was damaged by fire in 1885 and was scuttled near Montebello. The boat rose again in 1886 when it was re- built and re-launched as the S.S. Empress. There was also a time when people danced on water and orchestras serenad- ed travellers. For a century, steamboats plied the wa- ters of the Ottawa River, carrying goods and people between Ottawa and Mon- tréal. That era is remembered in an exhi- bition currently being held at Le Centre culturel Le Chenail in Hawkesbury. The displays recalling the boats that travelled the river from 1823 to the 1920s are the result of about 400 hours of re- search by historians Nancy Gray Lachaine and Irving Benoit Lachaine. Yet the crafts were much more than modes of transportation. The Peerless, as its name suggests, was one of the largest crafts to cruise the wa- ter course. “The steamer was a veritable floating palace,” say the Lachaines. Launched in 1872, it was built in England and shipped in sections for assembly in Ottawa. With an iron hull, the Peerless could accommo- date 800 passengers. The ship had an am- ple dining room serving à la carte meals and featured mahogany embellished cabins, a complete bar service and a large
