Welcome to the grand finale of the 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival. Today is TAB Champions Stakes Day with a sequence of three extraordinary racing contests, each carrying prizemoney of $3 million: the Darley Champions Sprint, the Kennedy Champions Mile and the TAB Champions Stakes. Last year the Victoria Racing Club inaugurated this new format for the last of the four days of the traditional Melbourne Cup Carnival. The result exceeded all

expectations, with spectacular wins to Roch ‘N’ Horse over Nature Strip in the Sprint, to Alligator Blood in the Mile and to Zaaki in the Stakes. The battles today will be equally impressive. Races for champions have been part of the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival for the past 150 years. In fact, the first great Champions race here dates back to 1859. But last year was unique in bringing three races for champions together for the first time, over their specialist distances The quality of today’s racing is enhanced by the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes of 2600 metres. Last year this race was run as the Queen’s Cup, an event traditionally rotated around Australian capital cities. This year on TAB Champions Stakes Day it reverts to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. This honours the late monarch’s deep affection for the sport we all love, and commemorates her several visits to Flemington, beginning with her first royal visit here in 1954. Also run today will be the World Horse Racing Grand Handicap, an 1100 metre sprint, and a salute to Flemington’s inclusion in the World Horse Racing alliance. We farewell another brilliant Melbourne Cup Carnival in championship style. Have a great day at Flemington.

Remembrance Day The VRC is pleased to support the Victorian Branch of the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL Victoria) to raise funds for the Annual Poppy Appeal – supporting Australian veterans and their families. O ne out of the box, as an old neighbour of mine used to say: the Victoria Racing Club’s inaugural Champions Day last year proved magical. There is a great word in French: prestidigitation. Think of Mandrake the Magician in cape and top hat: now you see it, now you don’t … and now you do! On Champions Day at Flemington last year, classics seemingly vanished. Something bigger and better took their place. The VRC launched its new-look final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival with not just one but three $3 million Group 1 champion races to strengthen the last of the traditional four race days as a grand finale, sustaining depth and quality right to the end of the week. There was also the Group 3 Queen’s Cup for stayers, icing on a magical cake. Those three Champions Races justified the label and the increased prizemoney. They stay fresh in the mind. The 2022 VRC Newmarket Handicap winner, New Zealand mare Roch ‘N’ Horse, edged international champion Nature Strip out of first place in the Darley Champions Sprint. Rising star Giga Kick finished fast but narrowly missed a place. Then, in the Kennedy Champions Mile, the popular Alligator Blood beat Group 1 winners Tuvalu and Mr Brightside. The flashy Zaaki defeated his stablemate Mo’unga in the TAB Champions Stakes. But here is the real magic: something can be new and historic at the same time. Each of those new Champions races has a pedigree that stretches far back into the past, bringing the lustre of history to the champions of 2022.

Stakes Day Magic

Take the newly enriched Darley Champions Sprint. This was the race previously known as the Darley Sprint Classic. It is the race that Nature Strip, son of Nicconi, won in 2019 and again in 2021 before triumphing in June last year in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. You might recall the Sprint in earlier years as the Patinack Farm Classic when Black Caviar sizzled to victory in 2010 and again in 2011; or as the Age Classic when Miss Andretti won in 2007. Confusion can creep in because the race was moved in Miss Andretti’s year from its previous position on Victoria Derby Day. And Miss Andretti’s was the year when the classic became a weight-for-age contest. For the previous forty-seven years the race had been a Derby Day quality six- furlong handicap, adjusting to the metric 1200 metres from 1972. It was the Salinger Stakes in Takeover Target’s era, and the Southcorp when Brawny Spirit won. It was the Gadsden from 1985 to 1993: Final Card equalled the track record in 1991. The race had first been run in 1960 with tobacco branding, among the first commercially sponsored events at Flemington. Champion names on the early list of winners include Vain, Dual Choice, Century and Maybe Mahal. Similarly, the Kennedy Champions Mile has its past as the ‘Cantala Stakes’. This connection is even more tortuous, winding its way back to an 1881

Flemington race called the Coburg Stakes. Hurtle Fisher’s horse Courtenay (sired by Yattendon), ridden by Tom Hales, won the inaugural race. There is much early Flemington history wrapped up with those names. In 1919, to honour Septimus Miller, a notable former VRC Chairman, the race became the Cantala, named after his grand property at Caulfield. From 1960 the race was shifted from Derby Day to the final day as a sponsored race, first as the Tattersalls Memorial then as the George Adams Handicap. The former Perth champion Aquanita set the scene with successive wins in 1960 and 1961. After 1985, the 1600 metre race changed name several times more with a succession of sponsors: Ampol, Honda, Nissen, Chrysler and, from 1998 to 2016, Emirates. Returning briefly to Derby Day in 2016 as the Cantala and then the Kennedy Mile, the race reverted to the final day as one of the three feature Champions Day races in 2022. Finally there is the TAB Champions Stakes, the 2000-metre championship. It links itself to the historic L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes, first run as such in 1936 to honour the memory of the late VRC Chairman. Previously it had been the Melbourne Stakes with a lineage stretching back to the era of the earliest Melbourne Cups. In 2016 the race was switched to the final day, won by Awesome Rock. By sleight-of-hand perhaps, the Mackinnon that year was called the Emirates Stakes – but became the Mackinnon again when Trap For Fools won in 2018. Prestidigitation? Wizardry? Whatever, let the magic continue.

We remember them…

F lemington will come to a pause on Remembrance Day, Saturday 11 November, as we pay our respects to our service personnel that contributed to Australia’s war efforts. Not only did Flemington play an important role as a training ground for soldiers, Cup Week 1918 was an emotional time, occurring just days before the end of the First World War. Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 5 November 1918. Rumours abounded that the First World War, raging for more than four years, was about to end – that an armistice would be signed, that Peace would soon be declared. The excitement at Flemington was palpable. Maybe today? Night Watch won the Cup. It seemed a great omen. Soon, surely, the dawn would come! Extra emotion surrounded this win. Night Watch was the son of Wakeful, one of the greatest mares ever to race in Australia. It was as if a son of Black Caviar or Winx or Makybe Diva were to win the Melbourne Cup today.

Flemington remembers

Two days later: VRC Oaks Day, Thursday 7 November 1918. A large crowd returns to Flemington. This time rumour turns into mayhem, but it was a false dawn. Where do rumours begin? This was the era before loudspeakers and public address systems at the racecourse, or of social media on your phone, but word spread instantly. Here was the newspaper report next day: FALSE PEACE REPORT EXCITEMENT AT FLEMINGTON: Betting Temporarily Forgotten Great excitement was created at the Flemington racecourse yesterday afternoon by a false report that Germany had surrendered to the armistice terms of the Allies. Betting was in progress on the third race … when somebody made the announcement over the [betting] rails that the war was over … In a moment all was excitement. The news spread like wildfire, and the betting ring became packed with cheering people. Backer and bookmakers gave no further heed to the wagering. The National Anthem was sung several times, and three cheers were given for the Allies, for Marshal Foch and for the boys at the front. Captain G. A. Burkett who was one of the original speakers at recruiting rallies on racecourses in Melbourne, made a speech, which was punctuated by great cheering … The band on the lawn played the National Anthem. After a while the excitement partially subsided and betting was resumed. Mr L.K.S. Mackinnon, chairman of the VRC, hurriedly sought confirmation of the report. He soon received a telegram from the Acting Prime Minister (Mr Watt) stating that the rumours were without foundation This was posted in the ring and evoked expression of keen disappointment—but the people were fortified by the belief that they had only slightly anticipated the good news of the near future. Showgirl won the Oaks, a daughter of another Melbourne Cup hero from before the war, the 1910 winner, Comedy King. Two days later again: Saturday 9 November, the final day of Cup Week. The Sydney horse Kennaquhair, gallant runner-up in the Cup to Night Watch, won the main race, the C.B. Fisher Plate. Again the course was crowded. Quieter this time, still no news from Europe, but anticipation simmered. The big difference to the previous four years was the attendance of ‘so many gaily dressed women’. Cup Week ended. The following Monday, 11 November 1918, Peace finally came, the armistice was signed. The place was France, the time there was actually 5am with hostilities to cease at the 11th hour. In practical terms that translated to 2pm and 8pm, respectively, in Melbourne, which was not on daylight saving time.

Flemington remembers

That evening, celebrations took over the main streets of Melbourne. People from the suburbs poured into the city, waving flags, climbing trees and street signs, bringing traffic to a halt: cheers and songs, shouting and bands, tin whistles and kerosene tins as improvised drums, tears of joy, private moments of grief. It was meant to be the end of the war to end all wars. This was a Melbourne Cup week and aftermath not to be forgotten. And, symbolically, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month has stopped the clocks ever since, in parts around the globe, for a minute’s silence, for Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day 2023 at Flemington The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is joining forces with the Victorian Branch of the Returned Services League of Australia (RSL Victoria) this Remembrance Day on Saturday 11 November, which coincides with the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, TAB Champions Stakes Day. The race day will raise funds for the Annual Poppy Appeal, a fund that has supported Australian veterans and their families by delivering life- changing support for more than 100 years. Racegoers will have the opportunity to contribute to the Poppy Appeal by purchasing a red poppy lapel pin with prices ranging from $2 to $50 from on-course RSL Victoria volunteers, with the poppy set to replace the iconic red rose as the official flower for the race day. In recognition of their service, free General Admission entry will also be offered for all past and current service men and women with approved ID. The gates at Flemington Racecourse will open at 10:40am, with a Remembrance Day Commemorative Service held in the Mounting Yard at 10:53am. The service will feature a bugler sounding the Last Post, a minute of silence at 11am and a recitation of the Ode of Remembrance by State President of RSL Victoria Dr Rob Webster OAM.

TAB CHAMPIONS STAKES

One of the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s most iconic races takes on a new name in 2022 as the contest initiated in 1869 as the Melbourne Stakes and then renamed in 1937 as the LKS Mackinnon Stakes becomes the VRC TAB Champions Stakes. Originally held on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and serving not just as a premier weight-for-age event but also an important lead-up to the Lexus Melbourne Cup, the 2000m feature was switched to the final day in 2016. The list of winners serves as a who’s who of Australian racing, including 15 winners of the Lexus Melbourne Cup in the same year – led by horses like Carbine, Phar Lap, Peter Pan, Rising Fast, Rain Lover and Let’s Elope – as well as champions of the ilk of Wakeful, Eurythmic, Gloaming, Tranquil Star, Sailor’s Guide, Tulloch, Tobin Bronze, Dulcify, Better Loosen Up, Lonhro and So You Think. Recent years have also seen international victories for England with Side Glance, France with Gailo Chop and Ireland with Magic Wand. It was a back-to-back success for the Annabel Neasham-trained Zaaki who led all the way in a star-studded field. Jockey Jamie Kah rated the gelding perfectly in front to turn the table on Cox Plate winner, Anamoe. It was an exclamation mark on what was brilliant carnival on the famous Flemington track.

HISTORY OF THE MILE

KENNEDY CHAMPIONS MILE The Kennedy Champions Mile is perhaps better known as the Cantala Stakes, and in fact, it retains this as its official ‘registered’ race name. The original Cantala Stakes – always a mile – was introduced on Victoria Derby Day 1919 to honour Septimus Miller who served forty years on the VRC committee, twelve years as Chairman. Miller asked for the race to be named not for himself but for his property, Cantala, on Dandenong Road, Caulfield. The Cantala Stakes moved to Final Day in 1960, rebranded as the George Adams Handicap, for the founder of Tattersalls lotteries, and run in later years under a succession of sponsors’ names. The Cantala went back to Victoria Derby Day in 2019 as the Kennedy Mile, but now returns, bigger and better, as part of TAB Champions Stakes Day.

HISTORY OF THE SPRINT

DARLEY CHAMPIONS SPRINT

For sprinters, the Champions Sprint of 1200 metres up the Straight Six track is the true test. The Champions Sprint has been known by other names, including the Darley Sprint Classic, VRC Sprint Classic and the Patinack Farm Classic. The inaugural winner of the then-VRC Sprint Classic was Gulnare in 1868. The race was upgraded to Group 1 status in 2007. Many legends of the turf have won the race, including Phar Lap in 1930 and Black Caviar in 2010 and 2011 and more recently, Nature Strip.
