2016 Northern Virginia Retired Men’s Golf Association (NVRMGA) Don’t miss out on a great experience of playing local

56th Annual Member - Guest Golf Tournament June 23, 24 & 25, 2016 **Entry Forms available online March 1, 2016.** Lottery will be held on March 2, 2016. Winter play course set up at ANCC will commence on or about 1 December and remain in effect until approximately 1 March each season. During this time only two sets of tee markers will be placed on each hole – one forward and one back. In many cases artificial mats will be placed on the teeing ground. When this option is utilized, all players should play from the mat and refrain from use of the grass teeing ground. We believe that this course of action will minimize winter damage, promote faster spring recovery and provide superior playing conditions during the golf season, generally March through October. The Committee thanks you for your support. Winter Golf Course Set-Up As part of our ongoing effort to improve the quality and consistency of our golf course playing conditions, the Golf & Green Committee approved the following action at the business meeting held on 8 November 2011.

country club courses. If you are 55 or older, you can become a member of the NVRMGA and do just that! ANCC will field two separate teams, one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players.

November 1 - March 1, Golf Shops will be open 7 AM - dusk. Courses open between 7:40 AM - dusk.

The ANCC Arlington team was the league champion in 2015 and 2010, and co-champions with the ANCC Fairfax team in 2011. In 2015, the Fairfax team finished tied for fifth place. Both teams are looking forward to successful seasons in 2016. The 2016 Army Navy teams will be put together within the next few months, so there is still plenty of time for you to sign up. HOW? Sign up on the ANCC website by 31 January 2016 for the Arlington Team here , and by 1 March 2016 for the Fairfax Team here . Even if you were a NVRMGA player last year, it is required you sign-up again this year. A contact list will be posted on the golf bulletin board in each ANCC pro shop whereby eligible ANCC golfers not currently part of a team, but wishing to join us in 2016, can express interest. How does NVRMGA work? We play each of 12 opposing teams twice, once at home and once away generally between early mid-April and early mid-October. Play is on Thursdays, teeing off at 8:45 AM at home and either 8:45 or 9:00 away. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in at least six matches and have the opportunity to volunteer as a substitute for matches on teams to which you are not assigned. A schedule will be produced in early February indicating which matches you have been assigned. These are full handicap matches, so no Mike Downs 703-317-1822 mpdx2@hotmail.com ; Nick Fritz 703-553-4435 nfritz@burdeshaw.com ; or Jim Schroeder 703-237-1939 jms.3821@verizon.net for the Arlington team. Year-Round Handicap Posting In 2009, the VSGA adopted a new handicap revision schedule and active season dates. Virginia will no longer observe an inactive season allowing instead year-round. Handicap index revisions will take place on the 1st and 15th of each month throughout the winter months. However, course conditions will dictate when scores can be posted and will be posted in the Golf Shops.

The Fitness world is abuzz touting the benefits of Pilates. Pilates can change your life – how you move and what you’re able to do. Pilates will strengthen your core, increase your flexibility and stamina and help with better balance and stability. It may even make you taller! On Sunday, January 10, at 1 p.m., we’ll host “A Pilates Primer” to introduce you to the basic concepts and exercises, as well as to explain the benefits of Pilates. You’ll be able to observe and ask questions, or participate to whatever level you are comfortable. Jean Morrison , our popular Evening Pilates instructor, will lead the workshop. The cost is $10 per person. Please sign up in advance by clicking here . In the event of cancellation, please provide 48 hours’ notice to avoid being charged. Physical Therapy for Low Back Pain Studies show that 80% of people in the United States report having low back pain at some point in their lives. In most cases, low back pain is mild. For some people, back pain can return or hang on, leading to a decrease in quality of life or even to disability. The origin of low back pain can be associated with repetitive movements, muscular asymmetries or sedentary positions. These medical diagnoses include herniated disks, stenosis, “pinched” nerves or sciatica. A general rule of thumb to help prevent low back pain is to keep your abdominals strong to stabilize the lumbar spine, and to keep your hamstring stretched to prevent excessive pull on the pelvis. If you are experiencing low back pain, studies show that seeing a physical therapy within 14 days of onset will lead to the best outcomes and return to quality of life. To schedule an appointment with a therapist, visit the fitness page of www.ancc.org or click here .
