Every December, Scherer Gardens gets transformed into a magical place for children and adults to enjoy the spirit of Christmas. With Santa taking requests and elves around every corner, kids can’t help but smile and feel the excitement of the season. Visitors can roast marshmallows, drink hot chocolate, play in the elves’ playground, go on a wagon ride, feed Santa’s reindeer at the petting zoo, and, of course, visit with Santa. Visitors can also shop at Santa’s gift shop, buy baked goods, and even buy a pre-cut Christmas tree, or cut your own. Guests were all smiles as they explored the enchanted Christmas playground. Mrs. Claus read stories to the children, and Santa Claus listened patiently as the kids told him what is on their wish list. La foire de l’emploi du Centre de services à l’emploi de Prescott-Russell (CSEPR) sera de retour pour une cinquième édition l’an prochain. L’événement se tiendra le samedi 19mars 2016, de 10 h à 15 h, à l’École secon- daire catholique régionale de Hawkesbury (ESCRH). Environ 35 employeurs y sont attendus afin de recueillir les curriculums vitae des chercheurs d’emploi de tous les âges. « Les employeurs doivent briser leurs croyances et leurs préjugés quant à l’em- bauche de personnel jeune ou encore semi- retraité. Les jeunes peuvent apporter une grande source demotivation et d’innovation au sein d’une entreprise, tout comme une personne semi-retraitée peut apporter un grand bagage de connaissance, a déclaré Murielle Huneault-Pilon, agente de déve- loppement dans Prescott. Il faut également considérer les employés surqualifiés. Sa- chons garder l’expertise dans Prescott-Rus- sell », a-t-elle poursuivi. Lors des trois dernières éditions, une foire était organisée à Hawkesbury ainsi qu’à Rockland mais, cette année, c’est à un seul endroit que se tiendra l’événement, pour la région de Prescott-Russell au complet. « On organisait une foire pour les deux villes mais la nouveauté cette année est que la foire se tiendra à un seul et même endroit. En 2017, si tout va bien, nous devrions la faire à Rockland », a expliqué CaroleMuise, agente de communication pour le CSEPR. Le thème de cette année, Viens trouver ton emploi , souhaite encourager la main- d’œuvre à rester dans la région plutôt qu’à s’exiler vers les grands centre. « La foire gagne en popularité d’année en année et devient un événement attendu dans la région par les personnes à la recherche d’emploi et par les employeurs, qui comblent près de 90 % des postes affichés suite à leur partici- pation à la foire. D’ailleurs, les employeurs gardent les CV amassés lors de l’événement et y retournent souvent lors des périodes d’embauche en cours d’année », a expliqué Mme Muise. Jusqu’à présent, c’est un total de 24 em- ployeurs sur une possibilité de 35 qui ont confirmé leur présence pour l’événement du 19mars prochain. Parmi ceux-ci, notons, entre autres, le Groupe Gray Hawk, l’Hôpital Général de Hawkesbury, Potvin Construc- tion, Calypso, Valoris, Montebello Packaging, la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (OPP) ainsi que les Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell. Il y aura donc des emplois offerts dans des domaines variés et accessibles à tous. Les employeurs ont jusqu’au 22 janvier prochain pour s’inscrire et ainsi pouvoir avoir leur kiosque lors de la foire. Un site Web sera mis sur pied à la fin du mois de janvier et permettra tant aux chercheurs d’emplois qu’aux employeurs d’obtenir toutes les informations relatives aux emplois offerts ainsi qu’aux différents kiosques, en plus des mises à jour à propos de l’événement. L’an dernier, la foire avait remporté un grand succès lors de ses deux événements, puisque 672 personnes s’étaient présentées à celle de Hawkesbury et 500 personnes à celle de Rockland.

Hawkesbury Christmas Tea at Le Chenail

I wanted to go bigger and faster.” Marie Dumais from Rigaud had several of her sculptures both inside and outside Le Chenail. Dumais creates stunning works of art using branches to create amongst other things, horses. Some of the other artists displaying their work at Le Chenail include Tommy Gee with woodwork and screen printing, Doris White with feltwork and unique wearable art, Manon Sauve with spectacular glass artwork, Jen Baumeister with beautiful pot- tery, Susan Jephcott with fascinating pain- ting, and Pierre Simard with lively, energetic paintings. Although the tea is over, the artwork will remain on display until December 31, as the Fine Arts Marketplace continues.
The very first annual Christmas Tea was held at Le Chenail over the weekend. Guests enjoyed tea and sweets, while artists displayed some of their finest work. Nine artists displayed and sold artwork using glass, paint, wood, wool, and textiles during the Hawkesbury Christmas Tea held December 6. Some of the area’s well-known artists like Gerdine VanWoudenberg fromSte-Eugène were on site to answer questions, talk to guests, and sell art pieces. VanWoudenberg creates incredible wooden sculptures with a chainsaw. “I have been creating sculptures with a chainsaw for about six years,” she said. “I did handcarving before that. I guess

Vankleek Hill Tea supports Trinity Church
President of the women’s auxiliary at the Trinity Anglican Church, Dorothy Clark was quite pleased with the turnout for the Tea, craft, and bake sale on Saturday, December 5. This is the first year the church held the Christmas Tea and plans on continuing the new tradition. The church usually holds a lunch during the Vankleek Hill Home Tour. Clark said they will be returning to the Ham and Salads lunch again next year.

Sacha’s Park destined for greatness
Reverend James Douglas said Sacha’s Park is destined for greatness as he introduced the choir at the Knox Church Heart of Christmas Concert Sunday, December 6. The church was packed with donations going toward Sacha’s Park. Smiles for Sacha Day On December 19, Jason and Jacquelyn Chenier are asking the community to spread some cheer in memory of their son Sacha who loved to smile. The event, known as “Smiles for Sacha Day”, first took place last year on what would have been Sacha’s 12 th birthday. “Smiles for Sacha Day was never meant to be an annual event, but we received so much positive feedback last year from those who participated, that we decided to go ahead with it again this year,” said Sacha’s mother, Jacquelyn. “It was a day full of love and joy, which is something we can all use a little of during the holiday season.” Over a thousand people participated in the 2014 event, with participants posting photos and a description of their acts of kindness on the event’s Facebook page. “There aren’t any rules per se,” explained Sacha’s father Jason. “It’s simply about doing something kind for someone else. Each participant is encouraged to make someone smile in whatever way they feel best able to do so.” A list of suggested ways to participate is listed on the Facebook page; Smile for Sacha Day. – Diane Hunter
There wasn’t a free seat in the house as Knox Church was packed to the rafters for the Heart of Christmas Concert to support Sacha’s Park, December 6.The Chenier’s were very grateful for the support. ArtScramble on Saturday ArtScramble is this Saturday, December 12, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Arbor Gallery Cultural Centre, 36 Home Avenue in Vankleek Hill. There are now almost 100 pieces, ranging from paintings to prints, sketches to watercolors, as well as a bit of jewelry, glass pieces and photography. Tickets are going fast, but not sold out yet. Tickets can be purchased at Scotiabank in Vankleek Hill and The Review . If there are any left over, there will be some sold at the door on December 12. In addition to being able to go home with a piece of original art and a chance to win the bid on Rita Iriarite’s painting, there will be food and drinks, compliments of the many loyal supporters of Arbor Gallery as well as Foodland. RBC Donation to Hawkesbury Central Food Bank
The RBC Foundation recently donated a check for $2,500 to the Hawkesbury Central Food Bank. Seen above is Liane Larocque, Branch Manager of the Hawkesbury RBC, handing the check to the Food Bank coordinator, Suzie Hinson. Each year before Christmas, RBC donates to the Hawkesbury Food Bank. Funds are used for Christmas baskets and for other things as necessary after the holidays.

En plus des recettes, nous avons également fait une tournée d’épicerie avec les participants pour qu’ils découvrent de nouveaux choix d’aliments, qui varient selon les saisons. La question de bien lire les étiquettes et, sur- tout, de comprendre l’information qu’elles donnent est aussi très importante, car bien des gens choisissent leurs produits par les étiquettes. » Mais trouver un juste équilibre entre une alimentation saine et une alimenta- tion savoureuse n’est pas toujours facile et c’est ce qui a poussé Jacques Bolduc, un des participants à l’atelier de décembre, à approfondir ses connaissances culinaires et diététiques. « Nous n’avons pas le réflexe de manger santé et, pour le développer, j’ai compris que j’avais besoin d’un peu d’aide, a indiqué le ré- sident de Fassett. Un atelier culinaire comme celui-là, ça me sourit car nous n’avons pas été habitués jeunes à bienmanger. J’ai 73 ans et nous avons été élevés sur le lard, les hot chicken, les hot-dogs et les burgers. Il n’est jamais trop tard pour bien faire et je ne le fais pas pour bien paraître, mais plutôt pour me sentir mieux. » Soupe aux lentilles, salade de quinoa et frittata vide-frigo riche en protéine, il est possible de manger santé sans vider son
portefeuille et détruire ses papilles gusta- tives. Selon la diététiste Julie Ladouceur de l’Équipe familiale, le gros bon sens n’est pas de tout couper, mais plutôt de varier les aliments pour non seulement atteindre le nombre de portions quotidiennes recom- mandées, mais aussi pour donner du goût et défaire le mythe que la nourriture santé n’est pas appétissante. « Si vous avez un gruau au déjeuner, ajou- tez-y des pommes en dés, des pêches ou rajoutez une compote de pomme à la place du sucre brun, a-t-elle expliqué. En sucrant votre gruau de façon naturelle avec les fruits, vous limitez l’ajout de sucre raffiné tout en ayant ce petit goût sucré. Au lunch, vous pouvez prendre un simple grilled cheese et y rajouter des zucchinis, des poivrons et oignons rouges et des champignons, et cela vous permet d’augmenter votre apport en légumes. Ça n’a pas besoin d’être compliqué, il faut cependant prendre le temps de le faire et d’y penser. » Cuisiner avec les diététistes est une série d’ateliers gratuits offerts aux gens aux prises avec unemaladie chronique, comme le dia- bète ou l’hypertension. Les participants peuvent mettre la main à la pâte pour les recettes en plus de mieux comprendre les subtilités de la nutrition et en découvrant les trésors cachés de l’épicerie. « Le choix est tellement grand que les gens s’y perdent et passent à côté d’aliments ou de recettes qui seraient parfaites pour leurs goûts et leur santé, a rajouté la diététiste du Bureau de santé à Hawkesbury, Lucie Pro- vost. Par exemple, j’ai rencontré une femme qui ne savait pas qu’elle pouvait faire cuire une courge, croyant que ce n’était que déco- ratif. Avec des ateliers comme celui-là, nous pouvons aider les gens à y voir plus clair. » Les personnes intéressées à participer à de futurs ateliers peuvent communiquer avec la Clinique du diabète au 613-632-1111.
