ANNIE LAFORTUNE annie.lafortune@eap.on.ca

J’comprends rien!

Mayor St-Pierre noted that the trend is towards electronic voting systems now but added that council first wants more details from administration on how such a system would work and what safeguards are need- ed to prevent “stuffing the e-ballot box” by hackers or people who might let others use their voter identity code to cast multiple ballots. The mayor also noted that a mix of both cyber voting and the traditional paper bal- lot at a polling station may be necessary at first to accommodate both those residents who are computer savvy and some seniors and shut-ins who may not either have ac- cess to a computer or be comfortable using one to vote in an election. “There’s a lot of work involved here,”May- or St-Pierre said. “We have some questions and we need to get answers.”

The 2006 municipal election cost the township more than $23,000 to organize, including salaries for municipal staff that had to work all that day and support fund- ing for volunteers. Total voter turnout from all the villages in the township was 49.1 per

A second and more detailed report is expected for either the last regular council session in August or the first one in September. “It is all under consideration at this time,” said Mayor Jean-Paul St-Pierre during a later phone interview, adding that council is studying the matter for now. “The decision has not been made.” The preliminary report noted that the cost to the township for hosting a civic elec- tion is going up while about half or less of residents who are eligible to vote take part in the event.

The cost for the 2014 civic election is projected at almost $43,000 if the traditional paper polling method applies, which includes organizing one or more advance polls for the benefit of voters who

might not be able to get out to vote on the regular polling day. The township already has set aside $15,500 in reserve for the 2014 election expense. The administration report noted that the

Winchester Hospital welcomes new doctors

The Winchester and District Memorial Hospital welcomed two new doctors in July, both of which are residents practicing in the field of familymedicine. Dr. MarenHamilton and Dr. Vanessa Carter will join residents Dr. Amy Commodore and Dr. Karen Li. The resi- dencies are for a two-year period. Resident doctors at WDMH are paired with a local doctor and learn through hands-on teach- ing at the hospital, which not only serves

area patients but is also a teaching hospital. Both new doctors come from small nearby communities—Dr. Hamilton from Lyndhur- st and Dr. Carter from Summerstown. They were chosen out of the ninety applications received for the two positions. Over 300 stu- dents from a variety of medical disciplines had clinical placements at WDMH last year.

Help Us To Help You! Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) is looking for community members to serve on our Quality Committee , a sub-committee of the Board of Directors. Your patient experience (whether as a patient or family member) can contribute greatly to how health care is delivered at WDMH. You can help us ensure that our health care team provides patient and family-centred care. The committee meets four times per year. If you are interested in being considered as a committee member, please contact Chris Barkley at 613-774-2422 ext. 6350 or cbarkley@wdmh.on.ca by August 28, 2013. Thank you for your interest.

Cholowski to be honoured at Terry Fox Run

Each year the Embrun-Russell Terry Fox Run honours a community member batt- ling cancer, and this year organizers have chosen long-time resident Walter Cho- lowski. “Not only has Margrit Cholowski (spouse) been a volunteer as long as I’ve been in- volved,” says organizer Cindy Saucier. “But he was instrumental in raising awareness and protecting Russell against a potential

waste disposal site.” Cholowski is one of the founders of the citizen activist group Dump the Dump Now. When diagnosed, he had to withdraw some of his participation. Saucier says, “Like Terry, he has shown perseverance, strength, and determination.” The run will be held Sunday, September 15 and starts at 9 a.m. The Russell start line is on the fitness trail near Mother Teresa

School on Concession Street and the Em- brun start is on the fitness trail where it meets Notre Dame beside Euphoria.

Fire department reports in Russell Township

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN GREGG.CHAMBERLAIN@EAP.ON.CA

Both stations also responded to highway and municipal traffic accidents to either support paramedics, help remove accident victims from within crushed vehicles, be on standby in case something ignited a fire in the engine compartment or if there was a toxic spill risk, and clean up the accident site after the damaged vehicles were towed away. The fire departments also provide res- ponse support on six medical emergency calls and dealt with two incidents invol- ving suspected propane or natural gas leaks. They also had eight false alarm calls, resulting from either electrical shorts or other causes. The remaining calls on the log sheets ranged from providing assistance to other agencies, providing standby area coverage for neighbouring municipal fire departments, and dealing with a downed power line early in January.

EMBRUN | Russell Township’s two fire de- partments filed their first quarterly report with the council. Dealing with fire situa- tions doesn’t even account for a quarter of all the work they do. The first three months of this year have proven pretty busy for the men at the Embrun and Russell fire stations. The township’s fire departments presented council members with the first of what will be regular quarterly reports on all the calls they receive, both fire-related and othe- rwise. From January to March this year, the Em- brun fire station received 29 calls while the Russell station had 22. Out of the total 51 calls between the two stations during the first three months of the year three of them concerned fire reports.

Operation Seduction, a hit on the international scene !

from Japan, South Korea and China. Held in Ottawa, Rendez-‐vous Canada is the biggest tourism show in Canada. Or- ganized by the Canadian Tourism Commission, the event brings together foreign tour buyers and Canadian tourism operators under the same roof. “Since we are located in the shadow, so to speak, of our nation’s capital’s major at- tractions, we are working on a continuous basis with Ottawa Tourism to highlight the

quality of the tourism products in Prescott- Russell,” noted TPRT President Claude Leclair. “It’s a priv- ilege to position ourselves within an event such as Rendez-vous Canada and to high- light our region at the national level.” A three-hour tour was organized in Pres- cott-Russell. According to TPRT General Manager Chantale Ladouceur, this marketing effort was a total success: “Buyers really appreciat-

ed their jaunt in Prescott-Russell. They were impressed with the quality of the products and they were charmed by the rural flavour of the region.” Participating tourism operators were just as thrilled by the experience and are en- thusiastic about the possibility of greeting tourist groups from all over the world. The region is also fine-tuning its wares within the provincial tourism industry.

City day camps returning to Calypso

àThe City of Ottawa has lifted its ban on day camp trips to CalypsoWater Park. Shown here is part of the new river ride at the park, Kongo Expedition. The city cancelled their outings after the Technical Standards and Safety Act body (TSSA) placed 20 charges against the popular summertime destination, varying in degrees of seri- ousness. The charges related to the 2011 and 2012 operating seasons. City program manager of Aquatic Services Dan Brisebois said the City had received supplemental information from Calypso management. As a result the City lifted the moratorium and looked forward to continued programming at Calypso.

Chainsaw Artist coming to Russell Fair ARTS & CULTURE

editionap.ca

RUSSELL l Kane Sibley, also known as The Chainsaw Artist, will be one of demonstra-

tors entertaining the crowds at the up- coming Russell Fair.

CANDICE VETTER CANDICE.VETTER@EAP.ON.CA

Sibley worked with wood all his life. After he studied Fine Art at Fanshawe College he specialized in wood sculpting using mainly chainsaws. For the last four years he has fo- cused on speed carving in public. Visitors to the Russell Fair can watch his creations take shape in what is as much per- formance art as visual art. His carvings are based on local wildlife, people and history. The performances are described as visually stimulating and interactive for observers. Reviews of his work are enthusiastic and audience members have been amazed by the speed, accuracy and beauty of his carv- ing. The fair runs September 5-8 and features entertainment for everyone. The Sam Rob- erts band plays on Friday night, and other entertainers include Judy Foodie, the Flying Fools High Dive Show, bands Jane’s Party, Switch Gears, local band The Front End, the Rain Man, and Straight Up. Also planned are open mic, talent competitions, and Deal or No Deal. There will also be plenty of trad- itional agricultural events such as the Agri- Village, Education Day, Super Gymkhana, Demolition Derby, Classic Auto and Bike Show, Tractor Pull and Garden Tractor Pull, and numerous side shows.

Andrew Watson and Hea- ther Koss-Huisman have stepped in for the interim, but with a num- ber of concert dates approaching, including the Russell Fair, the choir hopes to have a director in place by mid-August. For 15 years the choir has entertained in churches, retire- ment communities, nursing homes, and at special events. Most concerts are during the day and this year the group has been to 23 concerts in Ot- tawa, Vernon, North Gower, Kempt- ville, Winchester, Morrisburg, Finch, St. Albert, Maxville, Ramsayville and other locations.
