Chez Thérèse - three generations in Moose Creek

Julianna’s Bridal, Vimi Shoes, Richard’s Menswear, and Cinderella’s Prom Shop, all of which are run by family members and all of which complement each other. Renaud was groomed to take over Chez Thérèse. “I’ve worked in this store since I was 16,” she said. “When my grandmother became ill, my parents Vivian and Michel Théorêt bought it for me to run.” She says that while her parents watched over her they also gave her free rein. She knew the most about the business, having worked there for many years and gone on buying trips with her grandmother. Late last year, after officially taking over the business, she added a gift-shop component to the store, which “has been very well received”, she said. The store employs four people who are just coming off the Christmas rush and gearing up for the new spring inventory that is beginning to arrive. Lines include Columbia, Nygard, Point Zero and many others.

MOOSE CREEK l Barbara Renaud is the third generation owner of Chez Thérèse, which is well known locally along with several other fashion businesses in the Moose Creek mall. Chez Thérèse is part of the group of family-owned businesses that have brought shoppers to Moose Creek from as far as Ottawa and Montreal. Renaud’s grandmother, Thérèse Théorêt, started a dress and ladies’ sportswear shop, Chez Thérèse, in her home in1967. In1979 the Catholic school in Moose Creek, École Notre-Dame des Anges, was closed and Renaud’s grandfather, Gérard Théorêt, bought it. After renovations, he turned the old school into the Moose Creek Mall. This provided an economic boost to Moose Creek that has continued. Today, besides Chez Thérèse the mall also houses

The newly-formed Russell business network, now called the Rural Economic Devel- opment Community, met for their last meeting of the year at the Russell House Pub on Tuesday, December 17. The just-named group is growing and hopes to attract more local businesses during 2014. Shown here are Richard Hash, Pierre Leroux, Kim Bowles, Robyn Rutherford, Renée Bergeron, Edna Robinson, Sandra McNeill, Doug- las Azar, Anna Sundin, Tina Collins and Renée Gendron. The Rural Women’s Business Network is in the process of changing their event format and hopes members and potential members (any rural women involved in or considering a business) will provide input. The group, which had met at quarterly dinners at appropri- ate restaurants beginning in 1994, is considering moving to a luncheon format. Their first luncheon, at which they encourage businesswomen, including farmers, to join them, will be held January 21 at the Red Dot in Osgoode. For more information or to make reserva- tions for the luncheon contact Marg Newsome at mnewsome@cogeco.ca . Coodinators Marg Newsome, Lynn Mann and Cindy Jackson seek feedback regarding whether to con- tinue RWBN as is or to change to a lunch/social group. (CV) ŏ$*#%*#ŏ"+.)0

The Russell Male Choir has found a new director, Kacper Waclawski, owner of the Russell Music Academy. Waclawski is known throughout the area as a multi-talented musician who started the music academy, plays in several bands, plays many instru- ments, including non-traditional ones, and was a founder of Riverfest. Former director Neville Brown stepped down early last year due to health reasons, and the choir has been searching for a new director since then. The choir is also actively seeking new members. Interested men can contact Bill Garland at 613-496-1929 or Erik Ther- kelsen at 613-445-2899. (CV)
