Presenting The University of the West Indies The UWI has been and continues to be a pivotal force in every aspect of Caribbean development; residing at the centre of all efforts to improve the well-being of people across the region for the past 75 years. From a university college of London in Jamaica with 33 medical students in 1948, The UWI is today an internationally respected, global university with near 50,000 students and five campuses: Mona in Jamaica, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, Cave Hill in Barbados, Five Islands in Antigua and Barbuda and its Global Campus , and global centres in partnership with universities in North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe. The UWI offers over 800 certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate degree options in Culture, Creative and Performing Arts, Food and Agriculture, Engineering, Humanities and Education, Law, Medical Sciences, Science and Technology, Social Sciences, and Sport . As the Caribbean’s leading university, it possesses the largest pool of Caribbean intellect and expertise committed to confronting the critical issues of our region and wider world. With a network of more than 250,000 alumni, there is no sector of Caribbean society, including the highest levels of government, business, and civil society organisations in which our graduates are not found. Over 25 have risen to become Heads of Government or Heads of State, and countless more are leaders of all the professions – locally, regionally, and internationally. Two of the three Nobel Laureates of Caribbean descent have direct ties to the University: Mona alumnus Sir Derek A. Walcott (Nobel Prize for Literature, 1992) and former Vice-Chancellor, Sir Arthur Lewis (Nobel Prize for Economics, 1979). Our breadth of notable alumni also includes the current President of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 78), Ambassador Dennis Francis and the current Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Carla Barnett, among many others. The UWI has been consistently ranked among the top universities globally by the most reputable ranking agency, Times Higher Education (THE) . The UWI is the only Caribbean-based university to make the prestigious lists since its debut in the rankings in 2018. In addition to its leading position in the Caribbean in the World University Rankings , it is also in the top 25 for Latin America and the Caribbean and the top 100 global Golden Age universities (between 50 and 80 years old). The UWI is also featured among the leading universities on THE’s Impact Rankings for its response to the world’s biggest concerns, outlined in the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Good Health and Wellbeing, Gender Equality, and Climate Action. 2023 is significant for The UWI as it marks 75 years since the official opening of its first Campus in Mona, Jamaica. As we commemorate this jubilee year — themed, UWI at 75. Rooted. Ready. Rising . — we reflect on our foundation that is rooted in the Caribbean; we stand ready to confront present and future challenges and opportunities, rising as a beacon of empowerment to our communities through the delivery of world class education services.

Chancellor’s Message to the Graduates of 2023 My heartiest congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 2023! Your graduation marks the end of one journey and the start of another. As you reflect on the journey to this day, you will also be considering the future.

For the past three years our lives have been influenced by a combination of health, geopolitical and economic factors. The COVID-19 pandemic caused us to revisit how we organise our daily living, the Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in supply chain

disruptions that made us realise how inter-connected we are in the global space, and although the global recession that was being hinted at last year has not materialised, we are dealing with increasing inflation that also impacts our daily lives. Your programmes of study have prepared you intellectually, and I hope that all you have experienced at The UWI during these years – co-curricular activities and other student engagement and enrichment programmes – have helped to inculcate the skills and competencies that you will need to be resilient and to effectively engage in the world beyond The UWI. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023 suggests that technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence, will be a key driver in the world of work in whatever sphere of endeavour in which you will be involved in the future. In addition to technological literacy, several skills and competencies are important as you go forth. These include analytical and creative thinking which are among the characteristics of the ideal UWI graduate. Others are resilience, flexibility, agility, motivation, self-awareness, curiosity, lifelong learning, dependability, and attention to detail. Attitudes to work are also important for survival, in particular empathy and active listening. Underpinning your education and experiences is a spirit of regionality that is the foundation of our University. I urge you to keep it firm in your hearts and minds as you go forward. This year, The UWI celebrates 75 years of service to the region and you – our graduates – are our most significant contribution to development at the national, regional, and global levels. Today, we celebrate your achievements and the promise of even greater things to come. We look forward to your continued involvement with this noble institution which has nurtured so many and has placed you on a path to success. Mentor a student, contribute to scholarships and bursaries, return as adjunct or full-time lecturers, advocate for The UWI in your professional networks! We wish you the very best as you continue on your chosen paths and hope that you will remain engaged with your alma mater.

Robert Bermudez, Chancellor

Vice-Chancellor’s Message to the Graduates of 2023 My heartiest congratulations to the graduating class of 2023! Three years ago, in October and November 2020, the world was in “wait and see” mode. Some of you were already enrolled in programmes at The UWI. That year, some of you took a leap of faith and entered The UWI to begin programmes at undergraduate or graduate levels, not knowing what the COVID-19 pandemic had in store for the world. And what a fascinating journey it has been for all of us! The UWI, now your alma mater was able to pivot easily to emergency remote teaching in 2020. This was because the Open Campus, now the Global Campus had the capacity to conduct training in online teaching methods for sister campuses. This sharing of expertise reflects what we call our “One UWI” philosophy and underpins all that we do. Even though we delivered programmes in blended, and in some cases almost full face- to-face mode in the 2022 academic year, it is possible that some of you may have never been on one of the campuses. Whatever your experience has been, this graduating class, like those of 2020, 2021, and 2022, has a special place in the unfolding history of this institution. Your success is our success and your University is grateful to you for staying the course and demonstrating that in the face of challenges, by working together, we can achieve our goals. As you reflect on your journey to this day, I share with you a quote from Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Bishop Desmond Tutu – You stand out in the crowd only because you have these many, many carrying you on their shoulders . For many of you, this was a shared journey. Your batch mates, parents, spouses, and children have been there with you, every step of the way. So have your lecturers, the administrators and technical teams at the University. All of us have had to adapt to the changes in modus operandi . I ask that you find ways to say thank you to those who have supported you through this journey. Information and communication technologies have transformed our world in the past few decades. The COVID-19 pandemic forced our hand in 2020 and technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, cloud technology, and the internet of things are now infused in our daily lives. Traditional university life usually affords students opportunities to engage with counterparts from other countries and cultures. It is my fervent hope that even with online studies, you were still able to form friendships that withstood the test of group work and assignments. That networking and some of those friendships may last beyond your academic careers and into your professional lives. Continue to nurture those relationships. As you reflect on the journey you have completed and on what lies ahead, please consider how you can have a positive influence in all that you do in the future. In addition to your professional pursuits, mentor a student, contribute towards scholarships for bright but financially challenged students, advocate for your University in various fora, and stay in touch with us through the numerous social networking facilities that have been set up for this purpose.

My very best as you continue on your chosen paths. Blessings!

Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor

Principal’s Message to the Graduating Class of 2023

Heartiest congratulations to the Class of 2023. As the first set of students to enter The University of the West Indies (UWI) during the pandemic years, it is no mean feat that you have made it through those dark days of COVID-19 with all its vicissitudes. Today is your time to celebrate. Indeed, gratitude is a must, for blessings surely fall on your life, so, be eternally grateful. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the way we live, work, study and play, you had decided in 2020 to join the ranks of the most prestigious

university in the Caribbean, The UWI, to pursue your goals for higher education. This was a bold move, for times were very uncertain, but you made a life-changing decision to pursue higher education, the most important investment one will ever make in themselves. Today, you are poised to reap the rewards. We at The UWI Mona are happy to welcome you into the ranks of the prestigious Pelican Alumni Club. It is not a membership that you should take lightly as you are joining thousands of distinguished graduates who are now members of that august body which is associated with one of the finest universities in this part of the world. Despite the challenging financial situation, The UWI has managed to deliver strongly in the areas of teaching and learning, research and innovation and continues to be ranked among the best universities internationally by Times Higher Education, the most prestigious global ranking agency for higher educational institutions. This is a tremendous achievement for our young university. You, as our graduates should be celebrated for your role in ensuring that we continue to maintain the high-quality standards of Brand UWI . Your advocacy and critique have helped us to sharpen our business and management practices and our academic processes in order to serve you better. For that, we are grateful. Your journey to the top was not effortless. Your hard work, dedication to scholarship and the numerous sacrifices you made to complete your university education is admirable. Today marks the beginning of the next phase of that journey towards positive transformation in your country and the wider world. Rest assured that The UWI has equipped you with the tools for you to become change agents to positively impact the lives of others. Therefore, please use these tools to uplift the less fortunate and provide the society with solutions that will drive equitable growth and development for all and not just a privileged few. As you celebrate your achievements today, please become that activist citizen to foster a social justice agenda for a more humane and caring society. Let your UWI education be that liberating force which promotes tolerance for difference; socially, spiritually, culturally and economically as you join the ranks of those who strive to create a better world. I am confident that with the tenets of the ideal UWI graduate entrenched in your teaching and learning activities while you tenanted with us, the future will be brighter with you at the helm of decision- making and activism within our world.

Please go out and make The UWI and your Mona Campus proud by
