L’O RIGNAL

A proposed cement factory near

L’Orignal was causing a stir in Québec

last week.

Media reported that Québec

construction mogul, Antonio (Tony)

Accurso, is among the investors behind

the controversial venture that has sparked

opposition from many residents.

Accurso is vice-president of Colacem

Canada which has been planning the

establishment of a cement plant beside

the Bertrand Construction quarry, which

Colacem owns.

Accurso was recently charged with

fraud by a special unit investigating

allegations of wrongdoing with Québec’s

construction industry. Two of his

companies, Simard-Beaudry and

Louisbourg Construction had their

licences suspended by the Régie des

Bâtiments after being convicted of tax

fraud and health and safety law

infractions.

Colacem, which also owns a plant in

Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, says it will invest

$225 million in the L’Orignal Cement

Manufacturing Plant, to be located on 56

acres situated immediately to the east of

the Bertrand Construction quarry north

of County Road 17. Colacemestimates the

venture would create 128 direct jobs, 82

indirect jobs and employ 90 truck drivers.

Constructionofthefactorywouldaccount

for 200 jobs.

The business expects to produce about

3,000 tonnes of cement per day. There

would be an estimated 120 trucks

travelling on the 17 daily.
