New students sports council created

for a while, the Upper Canada district is working on a new separate sports league for elementary students for future fall sea- sons. The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) will continue to work with existing elementary school sports groups like the Leeds-Grenville Elementary School Athletic

Association, it has chosen to create its own separate group to organize and sponsor regional competitions in addition to those that already exist. The Upper Canada Sports Council (UCSC) will focus on sports for grades 7 and 8 at Up- per Canada schools, starting for now with league volleyball, basketball, and track and

field events. “What is the purpose of sports and extra- curriculars?” stated David Coombs, UCDSB superintendent, in a news release. “We think it’s greater than coaching or playing on successful teams. We think it’s about be- longing, equity, and inclusion, so we ‘re not afraid to innovate and try something differ- ent.” The current game plan is for the new sports council to host an Upper Canada vol- leyball championship in December, one for basketball in March, and then a track-and- field cross-regional meet in June. UCDSB schools can still compete in other regional sports events hosted by other school athlet- ic groups. The UCSC championship events will feature the top teams and athletes who have won separate qualifier events a week prior to the final in the six regions of the Up- per Canada school district.
