Proper joint alignment is most important as poor alignment can alter the loading on a joint and the muscles around a joint can weaken over time, causing the joint to shift and the cartilage to thin. As cartilage wears down, Osteoarthritis becomes much more common and pain symptoms become more a likely to play a role. As Osteoarthritis progresses, more symptoms can arise. The most common symptoms are: • Joint pain. • Swelling or tenderness in or around the joint(s). • Inflammation or flare-ups of pain in the joint(s) after use. • Feeling stiff after sitting or laying down for longer periods of time, especially when getting up in the morning. • Crepitus - also referred to as a “cracking or crunching” feeling when moving the joint(s), or the sound of bone rubbing on bone. Contact FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers today to find out how our services can benefit you!

As we age, our bodies experience a certain “wear and tear” on cartilage and joints. This can cause inflammation and pain, known as Osteoarthritis. According to the American Arthritis Foundation, Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, making itself apparent in people as they get older. It can certainly take a toll on one’s body, resulting in achy or painful joints after exercise, after a long day on one’s feet, or even after prolonged periods of inactivity, thus causing joints to constrict. The most common areas of Osteoarthritis are found in the hips, knees, and spine. These are joints that we tend to use excessively during our normal daily activities. Just think - by the time you get up out of bed, shower, brush your teeth, eat breakfast, and prepare to begin your day, you’ve already used these joints a multitude of times. If for any reason you repeatedly use a joint in a way for which it was not made for, then it is not surprising that pain can occur in them over time. If you believe you may be experiencing symptoms due to Osteoarthritis, you should consider Physical Therapy for proven pain relief. Why do we experience Osteoarthritis? While it is true that Osteoarthritis is most common in older folks, that is not always necessarily the case. It is possible that Osteoarthritis can present itself in younger adults, especially if they have suffered a traumatic joint injury, have weak or unstable joints, poor dietary habits, or unexpectedly, if they aren’t very active. Your cartilage works hard to protect your joints by absorbing the natural shocks that your body experiences on a daily basis. Therefore, much of your likelihood regarding

According to the professional association, 1 in 5 adults are diagnosed with arthritis annually. Physical Therapy is the most common treatment for Osteoarthritis, usually providing relief of joint pain in just a few sessions. If you have arthritis, don’t fret - there is hope! While anti-inflammatory and pain medications will help for the time being, they are very much a short-term solution. Physical Therapy can help in actually strengthening your joints and muscles once again, allowing for a much healthier and long-term pain relief solution. Physical Therapy will also help in learning to use your joints in new ways once again, allowing for the highest quality of life despite the severity of your arthritis. See elsewhere in this newsletter for additional options to get relief from moderate to severe Osteoarthritis Our physical therapists are trained to help you with joint alignment, stability, muscle regeneration, and most importantly, pain relief. They are dedicated to helping you get back to your normal levels of mobility. Don’t settle for a life of aches and pains - Physical Therapy can get you back on your feet and doing the activities you used to love! If you are suffering from Osteoarthritis, give us a call today - we can get you back to living your best, most pain-free life. Alternatives to Surgery: Using Your Own Stem Cells to Heal Your Body! 4 February is American Heart Month 1. Aim for lucky number seven. Young and middle-age adults who sleep 7 hours a night have less calcium in their arteries (an early sign of heart disease) than those who sleep 5 hours or less or those who sleep 9 hours or more. 2. Keep the pressure off. Get your blood pressure checked every 3-5 years if you’re 18-39. If you’re 40 or older, or if you have high blood pressure, check it every year. 3. Move more. Aim for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week of moderate exercise. Being sedentary for the other 23 1/2 hours is really bad for your heart. 4. Slash saturated fats. Cut down on saturated fats, which are mainly found in meat and full-fat dairy products. Choose leaner cuts and reduced-fat options. 5. Find out if you have diabetes. Highbloodsugardamagesarteries and makes heart disease more likely. 2 6 9 2 3 8 1 3 7 6 2 9 4 9 7 2 7 3 5 7 4 3 1 http://1sudoku.com n° 28718 - Level Medium 6

I received one-on-one hands-on care! “I came to FYZICAL to gain insight on how to recover from Patellofemoral (knee cap) Pain Syndrome. Heather Brabec was my Doctor of Physical Therapy and she provided me initially with an extensive first consult and I started appropriate exercises the same day. During the following 6 visits my exercises were updated, always on clear home instruction sheets, and I received one-on-one hands-on care. I can say that I’m 99% better with a few more visits to go before I’m 100%.” - A.B. 3 2 4 1 8 4 5 7 6 8 1 5 7 2 9 8 6 1 7 8
