MAY 2026 BARSTOW UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BUSD MONTHLY NEWS Included in this issue Information on Promotions & Graduations CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2026 What’s Happening In Our District Celebrating Our Journey Together Dear Barstow Families, Students, and Staff,

As I look out across our beautiful desert landscape this spring, my heart is full of gratitude. This year marks a very special milestone for me: I am celebrating six wonderful years with the Barstow Unified School District, including the last three years serving as your Superintendent. It has been the greatest honor of my professional life to lead this district and witness the incredible growth within our classrooms and our community. As I prepare to retire on June 30th, I find myself reflecting on the powerful lessons we have shared. We started by learning how to be the "Coffee Bean." Just as a coffee bean transforms a pot of boiling water into something rich and new, you showed me that we don’t have to let our environment change us—instead, we have the power to change the world around us. We also embraced the truth that we are "Better Together." Our strength has always come from the partnership between teachers, parents, and students. Together, we turned challenges into "Lightbulb Moments," those magical instances where a difficult concept finally clicks and a student’s potential truly begins to shine. While I am moving on to a new chapter, I am incredibly hopeful for the future of BUSD. I have full confidence in the leadership of Mr. Jorge Gutierrez, who, alongside our dedicated staff and supportive community, will continue to move this district forward. The foundation we have built together is strong, and I know that Barstow's best days are still ahead. To our Graduating Class of 2026: Congratulations! You are the embodiment of everything we strive for. You have shown resilience, brilliance, and heart. As you walk across that stage, know that BUSD will always be rooting for you. Whether you are heading to college, starting a career, or joining the military, carry your "lightbulb" with you and continue to brighten every room you enter. I wish every one of you a restful, safe, and joyful summer. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives for these past six years. It has been an unforgettable journey.

Stay curious, Barstow! With deepest thanks, Deanna Swearingen Superintendent

Sciencepalooza 2026 Students in 3rd through 8th grades from across Barstow Unified School District participated in "Sciencepalooza 2026" inside the Don Bilsborough Gym at Barstow High School. The event included hands-on activities, including shipbuilding, parachute experiments, Minecraft, and more, as well as presentations with live animals, the science behind pressure in hot and cold environments, a Star Wars robot, the creation of an octopus using a 3-D printer, making slime, using magnets to move an object out of a maze and guiding a robotic ball to different spots on a grid using a smart device. The fast-paced, hands on, high energy activities and demonstrations were a hit with students. Thank you to Stacia Lawhorn Lewis and Danielle King and everyone who made this event a fun opportunity for all who attended!

Sciencepalooza 2026 provided Barstow Unified School District (BUSD) students with an opportunity to get hands-on with science and see the art of science up close. Students met some of the animals that live in our desert, including a tortoise, king snake, hedgehog and more. “Saving Slowpoke,” a local desert tortoise advocacy group, shared with students the need to protect the tortoise from extinction. BUSD Superintendent Deanna Swearingen received a crash course in the importance of the tortoise to the desert’s ecosystem. Central High School students showed young kids how pressure impacts metal in hot and cold environments by taking an empty soda can, heating up the can, then dunking the can in ice cold water, causing the can to crumple.

Another part of Sciencepalooza 2026 was our students showcasing their science experiments. Congratulations to all of our students who received awards at the Sciencepalooza 2026 Awards Show. Several of our students qualified to take their projects to the San Bernardino, Inyo, Mono Science and Engineering Fair (SIMSEF) later this year.

A Legacy of Excellence : Celebrating Our 2025-2026 Retirees

As the 2025-2026 school year draws to a close, the Board of Trustees invites our entire community to pause and honor a remarkable group of individuals. This year, we say farewell to twelve dedicated professionals who are embarking on their well-deserved retirement. Collectively, these educators and staff members represent over 250 years of combined experience. From the classrooms to the front offices, they have been the backbone of our district, shaping the lives of thousands of students and mentoring countless colleagues. Our Honored RetireesWe extend our deepest gratitude to the following individuals for their unwavering commitment to our schools:

Holly Bowser will retire after 37 years with Barstow Unified School District, most recently serving as the Teacher on Special Assignment and Coordinator of Barstow High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) progams. She says she knew from age 4 she wanted to become a teacher.

“I was blessed to have such inspiring role models in my educational journey in Barstow Unified School District. Returning as a young teacher after five years working in Moorpark Unified was a true homecoming, allowing me to serve the community that shaped me. Working at Barstow High now completes that full-circle journey. I am the teacher that Barstow Unified built.” Thank you, Holly!

Willie Butts III after 3 years of dedicated service. Deanna Swearingen after 6 years of dedicated service. Denise Yates after 9 years of dedicated service. Anthony Jones after 21 years of dedicated service. Lisa Shipley after 22 years of dedicated service. Vivian Archer after 23 years of dedicated service. Michelle Mellody after 23 years of dedicated service. Juan Peralta after 24 years of dedicated service. Tammy Dittman after 26 years of dedicated service. Vince Wiiliams Sr. after 31 years of dedicated service. Monica Chong after 33 years of dedicated service. Holly Bowser after 37 years of dedicated service.

Monica Chong was a part of Barstow Unified School District for 33 years before retiring in September 2025. As the evening custodian at Lenwood Elementary, she ensured the campus was ready to welcome students and staff every day. Her smile brightened the day of anyone she talked with, especially the students. Thank you, Monica!

Their departure is bittersweet. While we will miss their wisdom, their humor, and their institutional knowledge, we are thrilled to see them enter this next chapter of life. They leave behind a legacy of "Excellence in Education" that will continue to inspire us long after they have cleared their desks.

Vince Williams has served the students and staff of Barstow Unified School District for 31 years as a teacher, principal and, most recently, as District Athletic Director. He says his greatest memory is the Barstow High School Aztecs Football Team winning the CIF State 4-AA Championship.

School Board Emails:

He says every year carries a great memory of a player or coach. His wish for Barstow Unified is to continue to grow our programs and facilities and increase success in all sports at both the high school and junior high school levels. Thank you, Vince!

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the administration, and the families of this district, we say thank you. Congratulations on your retirement—you have earned every bit of the relaxation and adventure that lies ahead!
