The Michael Ford Collection
An exploration of rhythm, identity, and cultural voice, the Michael Ford Collection brings together influences across music, architecture, and community. Shaped by the work of architect, educator, and Hip Hop By Design™ founder Michael Ford, FAIA, NOMA, NCARB, the collection translates ideas into material through rhythmic textiles and wallcoverings designed for connection, craft, and collective expression— capturing the “liquid architecture” of hip hop through refined, high-performance surfaces. The Michael Ford Collection
Michael Ford, FAIA, NOMA, NCARB is an architect, educator, and the founder of BrandNu Design Studio. Michael’s practice combines architectural design with cultural research and community engagement, creating spaces that reflect the identities and stories of the people who use them. In 2016, Michael founded the Hip Hop Architecture Camp, a program he runs through his nonprofit, Hip Hop By Design. The camp introduces young people to architecture and design through music and creative problem solving – illuminating a pathway into the design profession for emerging talent. Michael is an active voice in architecture through lectures, teaching, and public speaking. He has presented his work at universities, conferences, and cultural institutions across the country. His projects and educational work have been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Network, The TODAY Show, Rolling Stone, Vibe, and other national platforms. In December 2025, Ford received the prestigious Whitney M. Young Jr. Award from AIA. Through BrandNu Design Studio and Hip Hop By Design, Michael demonstrates how architecture and design can support creative expression, expand access, and inspire the next generation. Beyond all his work Ford is a dedicated husband and father to his sons, Mason and the late MJ3.

Bronx Composition The Michael Ford Collection - Textile
A rhythmic, large-scale stripe shaped by sampling and remix. Drawn from a single line of pixels and expanded into full form, the pattern moves with a sense of cadence—color blurring, skipping, and reappearing across the surface. Inspired by Ford’s Hip Hop Architecture Camp® in the Bronx, the design reflects collective creativity and cultural expression. Executed as a dimensional jacquard with varied yarn sizes across seven colorways, Bronx Composition translates visual rhythm into a tactile surface, bringing depth, movement, and connection into commercial interiors.
“This piece reflects the idea that hip hop is made of many parts— voices, places, histories—and every part matters. You rarely see the whole unless you honor the pieces.”
Cypher The Michael Ford Collection - Textile Rooted in language and identity, fragments of the phrase “I AM HIP HOP” are translated into a geometric composition—subtle, intentional, and layered with meaning. Letterforms dissolve into pattern, shifting between abstraction and recognition. Originally conceived as a community-based mural project, the design carries a deeper narrative rooted in voices, places, and histories. Executed as a dimensional jacquard, raised chenille sits against a smooth twill ground, creating a tactile contrast that enhances depth and color. Offered in ten colorways from bold red to refined neutrals.

Breakin’ The Michael Ford Collection - Wallcovering
Capturing the movement of breakdancers, lines twist, loop, and intersect—translating kinetic energy of bodies in a cypher into a dynamic, graphic surface. Based on a playful digital sketch by Ford’s son Mason, the mural-scale Circon® wallcovering carries a sense of spontaneity and flow, informed by layered drawings of figures, wiring diagrams, and expressive mark-making. Across four distinct colorways, these elements bring visual motion and layered expression into interior environments.
Dance Off The Michael Ford Collection - Textile
The upholstery counterpart to Breakin’, this pattern translates spontaneous mark-making and rhythmic movement into a linear expression, balancing vibrant energy with a grounded, artisanal hand. Oversized bouclé yarn creates raised, jostling motifs against a canvas ground, adding tactile depth with a subtle luster and dimensional character. Designed for seating applications and engineered for performance, the textile is offered in nine colorways—eight tonal variations and one high-contrast black and white.

Flow Chart The Michael Ford Collection - Wallcovering
A structured interpretation of lyrical cadence, the pattern maps rhyme structures as a field of floating elements—measured and precise, translating rhythm into an ordered spatial system. Inspired by lyrical analysis exercises developed through The Hip Hop Architecture Camp®, the wallcovering visualizes rhythmic compositions layered over a tonal printed texture. Produced on bio-based Circon® and available in six colorways, the design reveals nuanced detail up close while maintaining a calm, architectural presence across expansive applications.

“My goal was simple: to let these fabrics and wallcoverings carry the rhythm, motion, and honesty of hip hop while still serving the needs of designers and the spaces they shape.”
