Christs Hospital - Commercial Manager

Commercial Manager Candidate Information Pack

Welcome

Welcome to Christ’s Hospital. This remarkable School offers pupils from all walks of life the opportunity to achieve their full academic potential and to develop their interests and talents in a caring and stimulating environment. Christ’s Hospital was founded in London in 1552 and moved to Sussex in 1902. It has a rich history which is evident in many facets of school life. The most obvious is the Tudor uniform which is worn with great pride by our pupils. For all that, we have a decidedly modern outlook and our focus is very much on providing our pupils with the best possible preparation for the future. Academic expectations are high and pupils are given every encouragement to develop a love of learning and to pursue academic excellence. Our magnificent red brick campus provides the perfect backdrop for the busy lives that our pupils lead. As you would expect from one of the foremost boarding schools in the UK, the facilities are outstanding and the huge range of co-curricular activities on offer is second to none. Although Christ’s Hospital is predominantly boarding, our day pupils enjoy exactly the same routine as the boarders, apart from sleeping at school. The extended boarding week allows pupils to make the most of the vast array of day, evening and weekend activities on offer and helps foster the strong sense of community within the school. Christ’s Hospital prides itself on the outstanding young men and women who move on each year. Friendly, forthright and entirely unpretentious, our school leavers take with them the confidence and the skills that they will need to achieve success at university and to make a worthwhile contribution to society in later life. We look forward to welcoming you to our remarkable School. John Franklin, Head Master.

About Us

Christ’s Hospital is an independent co-educational boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 11-18 with 890 pupils. It is unique for a UK independent boarding school in that it educates a proportion of its pupils for free, and many at a reduced rate. This stems from its founding charter as a charitable school. It was established in 1552 by King Edward VI to care for poor and homeless children of the City of London, and the generosity of donors has built up an endowment that enables Christ’s Hospital to maintain its charitable tradition. School fees are paid on a means-tested basis, with substantial subsidies paid by the School, so that pupils from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds are able to have a high quality, independent boarding school education.

The School has an impressive history of academic achievement, 98% of leavers going on to top Universities in the UK and abroad. It offers a choice of A levels, Pre-U, and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. Christ’s Hospital also has an extensive commercial section, which, over the past decade, has gone from strength to strength. Bluecoat Sports with its first-class facilities and state-of-the art equipment is not only used by the pupils and staff, but also by the local community. It offers vibrant pay-as-you-go classes and individual/family membership schemes and plans are afoot to develop this facility further. The campus is hired during school holidays as a study centre for international students and at other times during the holiday period, Christ’s Hospital provides an exclusive venue for special events that utilise its extensive grounds, modern meeting rooms and majestic buildings, perfect for weddings. Profits are returned to the School to ensure even more pupils can benefit from its educational offering. All of this ensures that Christ’s Hospital provides a healthy, stimulating and comfortable environment in which pupils learn to be independent, making the most of their natural abilities, whether in academia, sports, music or fine arts. The pupils grow up with a good sense of responsibility towards each other, the School and the world around them.

We are an unashamedly academic place, in the broadest sense of the word. Everything we do - whether it's scholarly, sporting, solitary or social - provides the opportunity for us to prepare, participate and perform to the very best of our abilities. We expect a great deal of our pupils. They expect much of CH in return. It's what defines a school that wants its pupils to reach, or exceed their potential. A focus on academic enquiry will make your time here rewarding and fun. Every pupil is unique. We cherish that but expect, as a minimum, a passion for learning; an independence of thought; an enthusiasm for applying knowledge. Christ's Hospital is also extremely well resourced. While every fibre of our red brick estate is steeped in proud history, our classrooms, libraries and learning resources are contemporary. Everything is designed around delivering the very best education to young people who want to make their mark on the world. From the age of 11 - where the CH experience begins for many right up to the Sixth Form, which offers A Level, Pre-U and International Baccalaureate options, pupils lead active, stimulating and well informed academic lives, and are laying rock solid foundations for successful futures.
