In the case of the Rockland Variety call, the store is part of the older portion of the town of Rockland in a block where the buildings are bunched close together with very little space separating them. This kind of situation makes it easy for a fire to “jump” fromone building to another if it is not soon brought under control. A PES call demands as many trucks and crews respond as possible to either bring the original fire under control fast or at least contain it and keep it from spreading.

Rockland | It seemed like such a small fire call that Wednesday morning but residents who stood around on the street watching wondered about all the fire trucks and other emergency vehicles that showed up in front of the Rockland Vari- ety Store. A little do-it-yourself repair work in back of the variety store July 11 resulted in an accidental fire igniting. Soon after the fire report went out, all three district stations in Clarence-Rockland and other emergency units responded with a total of 11 trucks parked outside the store on Laurier Street. Part of the building block was cordoned off and Laurier Street traffic detoured onto St-Jean Street or one of the other cross streets further down. Fire fighters had the situation under control within half an hour and the building vented of smoke. No one was injured and there was minor damage as

a result of the fire. Rockland District Station Chief Luc Chayer explained later that the large number of ve- hicles responding to what seemed to be a minor fire call is a result of the department’s pre-planning strategy for dealing with parts of the City of Clarence-Rockland that are designated as “potential extreme situation” locations (PES). The plan is under continual review and as-
