Orléans | They are parents and grandpar- ents, sons and daughters, soldiers and ci- vilians, active and retired, young and old, and they all share two things in common. They all have dedicated their lives and ef- forts to making their communities and the world a little bit better, and they are all proud owners of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. “It is important that we honour people who work very hard over several decades to make the community better,” said Phil McNeely, MPP Ottawa-Orléans, during the Wednesday evening ceremony at the Shen- kman Arts Centre in Orléans. “You are a true reflection of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy. You have shown passion and dedication to your community.” The Diamond Jubilee Medal was struck in commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years as reigning monarch of the Com- monwealth. Canadian recipients were nom- inated based on their community contribu- tions, both in their professional lives and as volunteers. “These are very distinguished people,” said Grant Crack, MP Glengarry-Prescott- Russell. “They work hard and ask for noth- ing in return.” “It’s a real honour,” said Félix Saint-Denis, founder of l’Écho d’un people. “A real sur- prise too. It’s very nice to know that I am sharing this with so many people I know.” “It was really a surprise,” said Jean-Marc Lalonde, after the former MPP received his medal. “I had received one (jubilee medal) in 2003 and one when I was working for the federal government 30 years ago. But I never expected any of them.” “It’s fantastic,” said Aurèle Constantineau. “Really an honour.” The director of fire services for The Nation municipality and coordinator for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell has his daugh- Ottawa | It was a big help with rebuilding some of the City of Ottawa’s aging infra- structure. So city council thinks the fed- eral government should have something to replace the Building Canada Plan when it expires in two years time. Ottawa city councillors had no hesitation in giving unanimous approval during their July 11 session to a resolution calling on the Harper Conservative government to work with the Federation of Canadian Municipal- ities (FCM) on designing a new long-term program to assist municipalities needing financial help for major infrastructure de- velopment and renewal projects.

ter, Michelle, to thank for his presence at the medals-presentation ceremony. “I found out that it was her who submit- ted my name,” he said.” Ontario has 2000 nominations for the Diamond Jubilee Medal. The recipients honoured during the July 25 ceremony include: Élizabeth Allard, Ottawa; David Bertschi, Ottawa; Dan Biocchi, Ottawa; Ross Bradley, Navan; Frank Cauley, Gloucester; Aurèle Constantineau, The Nation; Syd Da- vie, Ottawa; Kimberley Fawcett, Ottawa; Jacqueline Fraser, Alexandria; Nicole For- tier, Orléans; Janise Johnson, Orléans; Jean- Marc Lalonde, Rockland; Jamie MacDonald, North Glengarry Township; Carl and Mary Lou Maisonneuve, Orléans; Phyllis C. May- ers, Ottawa; Gilles Morin, Ottawa; Denis Per- rault, Navan; Félix Saint-Denis, Hawkesbury; Eric Smith, Navan; and Angus Wilson, Cum- berland. Council noted in its resolution that the Building Canada Plan and several other fed- eral-provincial transfer agreements “vital to Canada’s cities and communities”are all due to expire in March 2014. “Our community has continuing infra- structure needs, such as light rail construc- tion and waste water storage chambers that can only be met with through the kind of long-term planning and investment made possible by a national plan.” The FCM is lobbying now for resolutions from its members demanding a new long- term federal infrastructure aid program for municipalities to replace the Building Can- ada Plan when it ends. Ottawa council gave its support to the lobbying campaign and is also demanding that the federal govern- ment have the new plan in place and ready to go before the March 2014 expiry date.
