SEPPELT WINES Stake Day What an unusual Melbourne Cup Carnival it has been. The world has been turned upside down with the COVID-19 pandemic and we have all shared in the sadness and disruption. And yet to our great joy, many of the best thoroughbreds in the world have made their way to famous Flemington. Cup Week has delivered on its annual promise of world horse racing at its best. In normal conditions, Stakes Day at Flemington is Family Day. We know that families will be joining us at a distance all around Australia. Everyone will FITPIEWIHXSORS[XLEX+PIQMRKXSRXLMWWTVMRKMWEXMXWEFWSPYXIǻRIWXXLI perfect backdrop to today’s racing. The feature race, the $2 million Group 1 Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes, holds an important place in the Victoria Racing Club’s proud history. Until and including 2015, as the L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes, it was run on AAMI Victoria Derby Day, as a weight-for-age curtain raiser for the Melbourne Cup. CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

For the past four years, it has become a great feature race in its own right.

Three other Group races feature today: the Network 10 Chatham Stakes, the 2600m Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the TAB Matriarch Stakes for mares. The end of surely the strangest Melbourne Cup Carnival on record gives us the chance to thank everyone involved in this wonderful sport, for their determination to keep Australian racing alive and exciting, and at the highest standards. We knew from our past that we could do it, and we look forward with hope and anticipation.

At its formal meeting on 23 October, the Board of the Victoria Racing Club resolved that the black-type 1400 metre contest on Stakes Day 2020 should be named “The Amanda Elliott” to honour the Chairman of the Victoria Racing Club on the eve of her retirement from the Board after 18½ unbroken years of honorary service to the Club. +YVXLIVMX[EWEKVIIHXLEXƸ8LI&QERHE*PPMSXXƹ[MPPǻRHEGSRXMRYMRK place in the VRC’s future annual racing program. This is a special honour, appropriately so for a woman who has been a trailblazer for the Club. Apart from a few exceptions in the decades before the First World War, women were not eligible even to be elected as members of the Victoria Racing Club until the early 1980s, let alone serve on the Committee. Sally Chirnside was XLIǻVWX[SQERIZIVIPIGXIHXSXLI:7((SQQMXXIIEWMXXLIR[EW in 1991. Amanda Elliott became the second, in 2002. Four years later the Committee was reconstituted as a Board. Her family has a proud tradition of service to the community. Her great-grandfather William Bayles was a colonial Mayor of Melbourne, her grandfather Norman Bayles a trustee of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and pioneer of lawn tennis in Australia, her father Ian Bayles a Second World War decorated air hero who

ON FRIDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2017 SHE WAS ELECTED CHAIRMAN – THE FIRST WOMAN IN THE CLUB’S LONG HISTORY TO HOLD THIS OFFICE.

In March 2018, Amanda was named The Victorian Wakeful Club, “Lady of Racing” which acknowledges outstanding contribution by a female to the sport of thoroughbred racing.

Her legacy as VRC Chairman? Everyone agrees on what tops the list.

The unique Club Stand, opened in spring 2018 – on time, on budget, exceeding all expectations – is the emblematic achievement, modern as tomorrow yet paying tribute to a rich tradition. Members speak of it as Amanda Elliott’s stand. Former Board colleague and then Club Honorary Treasurer, Tim Poole, describes her role as “relentless and inspirational – the stand could RSXLEZIFIIRHSRI[MXLSYXLIVƹ8LIǻRMWLIWMRXIVMSVWEQFMIRGI EXXIRXMSRXSHIXEMPEPPVIǼIGX&QERHE*PPMSXXƶWWX]PI8SGSQTPIXI the project, in the spring of 2019 the work with the Colours Building precinct was transformed into a beautiful, elegant stairway giving access directly from the train station into the Betting Ring and the Club Stand – this area has been renamed the Colours Stairway. While the Club Stand was being designed and built, the Chairman shared her enthusiasmwith VRC members. Completion allowed the Club to expand its membership: numbers grew by 10 per cent. Tim Poole speaks of a brilliant commercial and strategic mind, along with “her devotion to members, what’s in their best interest, what the VRC should aspire to be, how the VRC should position itself in global VEGMRKLS[XSVYRERSXJSVTVSǻXQIQFIVFEWIHGPYFƹ Not least of the successeswas ensuring that constructionworks and the tight schedule did not diminish the raceday experience for members. The general publicwas never forgotten either, with enhanced facilities such as “The Park” on the Hill. The Melbourne Cup Carnival of 2017was a complete success - one to remember for all the right reasons.

How best to summarise Amanda Elliott’s other achievements?

• Building greater audiences for Flemington, locally and globally, on course and on screen – notably by inclusion in the “World Horse Racing” alliance, in partnership with the famous racing festivals of Ascot and Goodwood in England and the U.S.A. Breeders Cup.

• Overseeing amicable evolution in the Club’s major sponsors. Emirates and Crown had been part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival for many years. In 2018 the VRC made a seamless change to Lexus and Kennedy. • Completing the world’s largest media rights deal in racing, with a ǻZI]IEV3IX[SVOEKVIIQIRXGSZIVMRK(YT[IIO • Maintaining Melbourne’s spring carnival traditions and the primacy of the First Tuesday in November as the bedrock of the prosperity not just of Victoria’s racing but of racing around Australia. • Putting the Club on the front foot on the question of equine welfare. With her own deep love and knowledge of horses, the Chairman was the ideal spokesperson. • Insisting that the history of VRC and Flemington is appreciated, and is the basis on which plans are made. • Steering the VRC team through the unprecedented challenges of keeping racing at Flemington vibrant and healthy throughout the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. Now under the rules of the Club it is time for Amanda Elliott to step down as Chairman and from the Board. “The Amanda Elliott” is our collective way of saying Thank You from the VRC Board, Members and the entire racing community. L.K.S AND THE SEPPELT MACKINNON STAKES

Women, L.K.S. Mackinnon once notoriously declared, should not be licensed as trainers or jockeys: “It was not their proper sphere.” History has not forgiven him. Lauchlan Kenneth Scobie Mackinnon (1861-1935) served on the Victoria Racing Club Committee for 26 years from 1909, and as Chairman for 19 challenging years from the First World War until his death. Scottish-born, on the Isle of Skye, Mackinnon dated his love of the sport to a visit to the races in London before he emigrated to Victoria in 1884. A solicitor, he became a partner in the prominent 2IPFSYVRIǻVQ'PEOIERH7MKKEPP-I[EWWIGSRHGSYWMRERH namesake of Sir Lauchlan Mackinnon, owner of the daily Argus newspaper, whose conservative views he shared. As an owner Mackinnon enjoyed success and made light of disappointments. He won the 1914 Melbourne Cup with Kingsburgh (a grandson of Carbine). His favourite horse was Woorak, an AJC Epsom Handicap and VATC Oakleigh Plate winner. He stood Woorak successfully as a stallion at his Chatsworth Park stud farm. 1EXIV2EGOMRRSRFVMIǼ]FIGEQIXLIPEWXS[RIVSJ2EVMF]VRSRK Stud, upstream of Flemington. As VRC Chairman, his views courted controversy. His 1932 rules IǺIGXMZIP]FERRMRK[SQIRXVEMRIVWERHNSGOI]W[IVIRSX[MHIP] appreciated even at the time. He preferred quality in racing to quantity, and helped close down Melbourne’s many privately owned small suburban racecourses. His committee excluded geldings from the Victoria Derby. He had his detractors.

=IX+PIQMRKXSRǼSYVMWLIHYRHIV2EGOMRRSRƶWPIEHIVWLMT;MXL Henry Byron Moore he masterminded the transformation in 1924 when the Members’ Stand, Birdcage and Mounting Yard were VITSWMXMSRIHJVSQXLIVMZIVWMHI-ISZIVWE[+PIQMRKXSRƶWǻVWX on-course totalizator system in 1930 and guided the Club through the tough Depression years. With the VRC as ‘principal club’ he SZIVWE[GVIEXMSRSJǻZIHMWXVMGXVEGMRKEWWSGMEXMSRWMR:MGXSVMEE lasting reform. After his death the Committee renamed the Melbourne Stakes, the major weight-for-age race on Derby Day, in his honour. It had long been a stepping stone for horses aiming for the Melbourne Cup. The Trump won the Mackinnon-Cup double in 1937. Nine subsequent champions followed his example. Many trainers, notably Bart Cummings, regarded even a beaten run in the Mackinnon as an ideal top-up for the Cup. With training patterns evolving, and more internationals running in the Cup, it made sense for the VRC in 2016 to switch the shorter Kennedy Cantala Stakes to Derby Day and reposition the Mackinnon Stakes, sponsored by Seppelt, as the feature race of XLIǻREPEXYVHE]SJXLI2IPFSYVRI(YT(EVRMZEP&TVM^IQSRI] boost to $2 million made the Group 1 race a goal in itself and an added attraction for the overseas horses.

LKS deserves his major race, as one of the great names of Flemington. Still, it was a nice turn of events when Gai Waterhouse won the Mackinnon Stakes as trainer, three times in the 2000s. One day a woman jockey will win the Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes to complete the story. It is only a matter of time.

ALL HEART FOR HARTNELL By Patrick Bartley

He was the courageous and versatile horse on the track that captured the hearts of fans everywhere, and looks to do the same in his new career. Fortunately, Hartnell has not moved too far away from the Flemington action, as he is also still visited almost daily by his greatest fan of all, Reg Fleming. Even after labouring from early morning until dusk in the spacious stables of James Cummings at Flemington, one of his long-time lieutenants still had an important job to do when the last of their horses has been fed. Reg Fleming, dedicated foreman for Cups King Bart Cummings and now a ZEPYEFPIGSQTSRIRXMR'EVXƶWKVERHWSRƶWXVEMRMRKIWXEFPMWLQIRXEP[E]WǻRHW time most days to visit some of their former champions.

Fleming joined the Cummings family in the late 1980s but has been an ardent supporter of horses’ needs and welfare during and after their careers.

On most days Fleming travels to the Patterson family, friends of the former Queenslander who are looking after weight-for-age hero Hartnell who retired early last year.

Hartnell was a winner of four Group 1 races and was also second to Australia’s greatest race mare Winx in four of their eight meetings.

“He was very special, he loved a cuddle, he loved a pat, he was so kind and yet at the races he was so brave and so honest. I call in and see him most days, give him a pat, have a talk to him but I try to catch up with so many of our horses to see that they’re going okay,” Fleming said.

Fleming has been a long-time advocate that horses should be cared for and respected in training and then looked after in their retirement.

“With Hartnell he gave his all. He was a winner at 1400m in Australia and two miles in England. He gave us everything (winner of $7.4 million in prize money) so we’ve got to return the kindness he showed us. “Horses don’t last a long time. Their career may be just a few years from being a yearling to a three-year-old. They get little niggles and problems that can sometimes end their careers suddenly. “But I can tell you that as a man who has been with horses all my career and watched my father also give a lifetime to racing, the lesson is that we should never forget that without the horses and their courage and brilliance we would have nothing. No horse, no employment and the world would miss out on seeing a wonderful animal,” Fleming said.

EQUINE STORY

Hartnell is enjoying his life learning the ropes at becoming a show horse, with a placid temperament, clean legs and a stunning coat, the horse is the envy of all of that fraternity that see him. However, Fleming is at pains to explain that Hartnell’s future in the equestrian world will be a slow process of the horse learning the discipline, but at the same time enjoying his new venture into the showworld. “He’s shown already a great liking for it, but it’s probably us, the people who really love him, being over cautious wanting nothing to go wrong with the horse who has given us so much. Fleming and his former trainer, James Cummings, make no secret that they are cautious with Hartnell and while he exudes all of the requirements for a successful show career, they maintain there’s no rush “to get him on the road”.

At this stage, Hartnell is being taken through the rudimentary part of showwork and both Patterson and Fleming admit that the horse has adapted quickly to the new lifestyle. Points for the JB Cummings Leading Trainer Award and the Ron Hutchinson Leading Jockey Award are allocated per race on a 3-2-1 basis for horses who fi nish fi rst, second and third during all races of the Melbourne Cup Carnival

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AT FLEMINGTON

As a globally recognised event, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) acknowledges its impact on the surrounding environment. During the 2019 Melbourne Cup Carnival, the VRC and its sustainability partner, Incognitus, achieved the following results:

30,000 single use plastic cups were eliminated in The Club Stand through the use of reusable drinking glasses

42 tonnes of food waste was diverted from landfill and used to create green energy which was sold back to the grid.

100 tonnes of construction and demolition waste was repurposed by the RSPCA, Men’s Sheds and Community Partners.
