SUBJECT OVERVIEWS Prep to Year 6

LITERACY From Prep to Year 6, students progressively develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. In Prep, learning focuses on recognising letters and sounds, identifying high-frequency words and forming simple sentences through drawing and early writing while participating in shared reading and discussions. In Years 1 and 2, students build reading fluency and comprehension by engaging with a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts and begin writing simple recounts, narratives and reports with increasing attention to spelling and punctuation. In Years 3 and 4, students analyse texts more closely by identifying main ideas, text features and author purpose, while writing expands to include persuasive texts, information reports and poetry with improved paragraph structure and editing skills. By Years 5 and 6, students read more complex texts and evaluate how language features influence meaning and audience. Writing becomes more structured and sophisticated, including persuasive, narrative and analytical pieces, and students refine grammar, vocabulary and editing skills while confidently presenting ideas in discussions and presentations. NUMERACY Numeracy learning develops from foundational number knowledge to complex problem solving. In Prep, students explore counting, patterns, shapes and simple addition and subtraction through practical activities. In Years 1 and 2, students strengthen their understanding of place value, addition and subtraction strategies and begin exploring multiplication concepts, measurement and simple data representation. During Years 3 and 4, students apply multiplication and division strategies, work with fractions and decimals

and investigate measurement concepts such as perimeter, area and angles while interpreting data. In Years 5 and 6, students deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages and apply these concepts to real-world contexts including financial mathematics. They explore algebraic patterns, probability and statistical investigations while developing mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills that prepare them for more advanced mathematical learning. AUSLAN Auslan learning introduces students to visual language and communication while developing cultural awareness. In Prep, students learn basic greetings, simple signs and the importance of facial expressions and gestures in communication. In Years 1 and 2, students expand their vocabulary by learning the alphabet, numbers and everyday signs and begin forming short phrases. During Years 3 and 4, students develop conversational skills by asking and answering simple questions and communicating about familiar topics such as activities and preferences. In Years 5 and 6, students become more confident in using Auslan to describe people, events and classroom topics while continuing to practise conversational signing. Students also learn about Deaf culture and the importance of visual communication, progressing from basic recognition of signs to meaningful interaction.
