Bill Panas College Principal
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY The Lakes South Morang College respectfully acknowledges that beneath our classrooms, learning streets and significant River Red Gums that feature across our College’s landscape lay the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri-Willam people of the Kulin Nation.
We thank the Traditional Custodians of this land and pay tribute to their ongoing connection to land, water, knowledge and culture.
We are inspired by those who have inhabited, nurtured and cared for this land since the beginning, and we aspire to continue caring for this land for the rest of time. We pay our respect to ancestors, Elders, and, those emerging to lead future generations, as well as any First Nations people connected to our College community.
CHILD SAFETY
DIVERSITY AND EQUITY
To thrive, young people have the right to a safe and supportive environment at school, at home, and, in the broader community; no exceptions. At the Lakes South Morang College, we believe meeting the physical, social and emotional needs of our students is paramount in laying the foundations for a fulfilling future. We pledge to provide an environment that has zero tolerance to child abuse and strive to work in partnership with our parents/carers and community members to keep our students safe; every day, in every way.
The Lakes South Morang College proudly celebrates and affirms our diverse College community.
We recognise that diversity exists in bodies, hearts and minds, and, we commit to promoting equity, inclusion, compassion and mutual respect. Diversity and equity enrich our College and both are instrumental to our success as we nurture a community of learners and future leaders who feel safe to: express themselves; explore the world around them; and, develop and grow in a global and dynamic society.

OUR STORY
Nestled in the heart of South Morang, The Lakes South Morang College stands proudly, its roots deep within the soil, much like the majestic River Red Gums that grace its grounds. The land on which The Lakes stands has long been a place of teaching and learning, as it has been for the Wurundjeri people, the traditional custodians of this Country. For generations, knowledge, culture, wisdom, and nurturing of the land has been passed down to all who inhabit it. In their spirit, we too embrace our role as custodians, committed to protecting and caring for all that lives and learns on these grounds. We honour the Country of the Wurundjeri-Willam people by fostering an environment of respect, custodianship, and growth, ensuring that this land continues to be a place of learning for generations to come. The ancient River Red Gums adorning our grounds have watched over the land for millennia, their towering forms symbolising resilience, growth, and the passage of time. As with every tree, our students begin their journey as tiny seeds, full of potential and promise. Just as a tree grows through different stages—from seedling to sapling, and finally to a mature tree—so too do our students as they progress from Prep through to Year 12. Each year brings new branches of knowledge, each experience adds to the richness of their character, and every challenge strengthens their core, just as the trunk of a tree becomes sturdier with age. Our College is home to many types of eucalyptus trees, reflected in our College emblem, each one unique yet connected by a shared environment.
This diversity mirrors our school community, where each student, staff member, and family brings their own individuality to our collective experience. Like the eucalyptus trees, we stand tall together, celebrating our differences while nurturing a shared commitment to growth, learning, and connection. Our emblem also features gentle waves, which represent the natural ebb and flow of learning and development. These waves symbolise the Plenty River and surrounding waterways that sustain the River Red Gums and also represent the different levels of schooling that our students navigate— starting from the early ripples of Prep, moving through the steady currents of Primary school, and eventually riding the stronger waves of Secondary education. In every wave, there are moments of calm and moments of challenge. Our students learn to navigate these with resilience and adaptability, just as the eucalyptuses bend with the wind but remain rooted in the earth. As they progress, they are supported by the entire school community— teachers, peers, and families—ensuring that no wave is too daunting to overcome. The Lakes is not just a place of learning; it is a thriving ecosystem where every individual is nurtured and where the growth of each student is as natural and inevitable as the growth of the great River Red Gums that have stood for generations. Together, we are all part of this vibrant, interconnected community, each contributing to the legacy of strength, diversity, and growth.

WELCOME TO THE PRIMARY CAMPUS
At The Lakes South Morang College, we nurture every student’s individual strengths, building their confidence, capability and love of learning through tailored learning experiences.
TEACHING & LEARNING At The Lakes South Morang College, we make learning engaging, purposeful and enjoyable. We maintain a strong focus on literacy and numeracy development for all students. In the early years, students build strong foundations in language through a systematic phonics approach. As they progress through their schooling, this focus expands to include reading comprehension, critical thinking and deep engagement with texts. Across the school, students are immersed in hands-on, rich learning experiences that develop number awareness, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving capabilities. We also support the development of contemporary technology capabilities, fostering creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and innovation through the purposeful use of 21st century digital technologies. AGENCY & ENGAGEMENT The wellbeing of our students is central to our work, and we are committed to ensuring the emotional and physical health, safety and success of every child. Our shared values of Respect, Teamwork, Learning and Leadership are at the heart of a safe, positive and inclusive learning environment that nurtures student wellbeing and belonging. At The Lakes South Morang College, all students are empowered to learn, achieve and grow through high-quality teaching practices and the best possible conditions for learning. We are committed to equipping students with the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed for lifelong learning, enabling them to contribute positively and confidently to the world around them.
TRANSITION Transition is an important stage in a child’s education, and we value parents and carers as active partners throughout this journey. It begins with a positive and supportive move from kindergarten to school, helping young learners build confidence, curiosity and a strong foundation for learning, while feeling safe, connected and ready to form friendships. As students progress through Primary school, we continue to support them in preparing for the next stage. Our Year 5/6 Step Up Program helps students become familiar with the Secondary environment and expectations, building confidence and easing the transition. We also provide an Intraschool Transition Program before the end of Term 4, allowing students to experience the routines and expectations of their next year level. In the final week, Meet the Teacher Day gives students time in their new classroom with their new teacher, supporting a smooth and confident start to the school year. DIVERSITY & INCLUSION At The Lakes South Morang College, we are committed to supporting every learner’s individual needs and strengths. Our approach to Disability Inclusion fosters a strong sense of belonging, enhances social and academic outcomes, and prepares all students to thrive in a diverse and inclusive world. Inclusive education also challenges stereotypes and promotes a culture of respect, empathy and understanding. A variety of dedicated programs are in place to support individual learning needs and maximise each student’s ability to succeed academically, physically and emotionally. Classroom programs are designed to foster engagement through strong oral language development, visual supports, and differentiated learning experiences that enable all students to access success.

LEARNER COACHES
LEARNER REVIEW MEETINGS Learner Review Meetings are held in Term 1 and Term 3, following the distribution of Progress Reports in Secondary and at the end of term in Primary. These meetings complement the Meet and Greet sessions held at the beginning of the year, ensuring regular and meaningful communication between families and teachers. They provide an important opportunity for parents and carers to stay informed about their child’s learning journey and overall progress. Parents and carers are encouraged to attend these meetings alongside their child, supporting a collaborative approach where everyone plays an active role in the learning process. During each 15-minute session, classroom teachers share insights into student progress, strengths and next steps. Meetings are offered in a flexible hybrid format, allowing families to attend either onsite or online, with bookings conveniently made via Compass.
A Learner Coach is a dedicated educator who provides personalised academic support and guidance to students. Their primary role is to help students develop effective learning strategies, improve their study habits, and achieve their educational goals. Learner Coaches work one-on-one or in small groups with students to address their individual learning needs, goals and challenges. They also teach students essential study skills such as time management, and organisation. Learner Coaches help students set realistic academic goals and create action plans to achieve them, by providing encouragement and motivation, helping students stay focused and confident in their abilities. Learner Coaches regularly monitor students’ progress, provide feedback, and adjust learning strategies as needed to ensure continuous improvement. They act as a mentor and advocate for students, empowering them to take control of their learning and succeed academically.

Our approach to education places equal emphasis on mental, emotional, and physical health, recognising that wellbeing and learning are inextricably linked. The wellbeing team at The Lakes is responsible for the provision, coordination and evaluation of wellbeing services provided by the College to students and their families. This team is comprised of dedicated professionals committed to providing comprehensive support to students that includes mental health support and counselling, programs, case management, year level and whole school events catering for the diverse needs of our students and school community.

ATTENDANCE
Schooling is compulsory for people aged 6 to 17 years (unless an exemption from attendance or enrolment has been granted). Daily attendance is important for all students to succeed in education and to ensure they do not fall behind - socially or developmentally. The Lakes believes all students should attend school all day, every day when the school is open for instruction and is committed to working in partnership with the College community to encourage and support full school attendance. Every 3 weeks, a letter will be sent to families when student attendance falls below 80% for that attendance period. Punctuality is essential to every session throughout the school day. Key Learning Intentions and Success Criteria are determined within the first 5-10 minutes of each lesson, supporting students to understand and prioritise learning for each session. Students who are late to individual classes will need to report to the Administration Office for a late pass. This will be recorded and communicated to families via Compass. Students arriving to school late or departing early will be signed out by an authorised adult over the age of 18 from the administration office. ABSENCE Families are asked to notify The Lakes of absences by recording the absence on Compass or alternatively contacting the Administration Office on either Campus. If a student is absent, and the College has not been notified by a parent/carer, the College will contact families via a Compass notification to the Parent Portal. Extended students’ absences need to be communicated to the Administration office.

SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear New and Incoming Families,
Research has proven that when parents/carers have a strong partnership with their school and are involved with it in some way, their children are likely to be happier, more confident and perform better in their learning and relationships. Your involvement, no matter how big or small, will help us continue to build a community where every student can flourish. For our students, being part of school council activities is a wonderful opportunity to develop leadership skills, meet new friends, and make a positive difference. I encourage all students to explore the various clubs, committees, and programs we offer and to take advantage of these leadership opportunities. Once again, welcome to The Lakes South Morang College. We hope that you will take the opportunity to build a partnership with us and look forward to your active participation in our school community, so that together, we can support our students as they develop their skills as creative problem solvers and critical thinkers. Should you have any questions or wish to learn more about how you can get involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any member of School Council.
On behalf of the members of The Lakes South Morang College School Council, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our school and to our active and diverse community. At The Lakes, we pride ourselves on fostering an environment where students are encouraged to thrive academically, socially, and personally. Our dedicated teachers and staff are committed to supporting each student’s unique journey, ensuring that they feel valued, respected, and inspired to reach their full potential. Our School Council is a very active and action-led body of staff and parents/carers, coming from a wide-range of professional backgrounds that oversee the policy and financial decisions for the school. In addition, we also raise, review, discuss and action issues that are important to our parent/ carer community. Strengthening our community engagement with a problem-solving mindset underpins everything we do, and vice versa, a well- informed and effective School Council strengthens community confidence. I therefore would like to extend a special invitation to you and your family to become actively involved in the life of our school, and your voice and participation can make a meaningful impact. Whether it’s through attending meetings, lending a hand at events, sharing your ideas and feedback, or helping out in the classroom, there are many ways to get involved and contribute to our school’s success.
Warm regards,

The Lakes believes that strong family-school partnerships are foundational to the success of our students. Families are not just observers in their child’s education; they are valued members of our College community and equal partners in the learning journey, empowering students to achieve their full potential.
Our College is built on the values of Learning, Leadership, Teamwork, and Respect, and these values guide our approach to family engagement.
Learning: Learning does not begin and end in the classroom. When families engage in their child’s education, support their learning at home, and stay informed about their progress, their academic success is enhanced. Leadership: Every family is viewed as a leader in their child’s education. Family insights, aspirations, and expectations help shape the educational path that young people take. Families are encouraged to lead with confidence and integrity and take active roles in decision-making processes and advocacy for their children. Teamwork: Education is a shared responsibility. Our College thrives on collaboration between families, teachers, and students. We believe in open communication and mutual support, where the school and families work as a team to address challenges, celebrate successes, and create the shared conditions for learners to thrive. Respect: At the core of any strong partnership is respect. We respect and value the diverse experiences, cultures, and perspectives that families bring to our community. By fostering a culture of respect, all families are valued and included. Mutual respect strengthens our relationships and enhances our College community.

INTEGRATE LEARNING INTO EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES: • Use everyday situations as learning opportunities. E.g., involve your child in cooking to practice measurements, or discuss current events to improve critical thinking. • Encourage problem-solving and creativity by engaging in activities like puzzles, building projects, or science experiments at home. MODEL A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARD LEARNING: • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward education. Avoid negative talk about school or difficult subjects. Instead, encourage perseverance and a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as opportunities to learn.
ENCOURAGE A LOVE OF READING: •
Promote reading by providing a variety of books, magazines, and educational materials at home. Set aside time for family reading and discuss the stories or information you’ve read together.

COMPLAINTS AND CONCERNS PROCESS FOR STUDENTS
The Lakes acknowledges that issues or concerns can cause stress or worry for students and impact their wellbeing and learning. The Lakes encourages our students to raise issues or concerns as they arise so that we can work together to resolve them. Students with a concern or complaint can raise them with a trusted adult at our College, for example, with classroom teachers, Learning Coaches, Year Level Leaders, Wellbeing staff, Koorie Education Support Officers, Education Support staff, and Peer Support Leaders. This person will take your concern or complaint seriously and will explain to you what steps we can take to try to resolve the issue and support you. You can also ask your parent, carer or another trusted adult outside of the College, to talk to us about the issue instead. Information about our parent/carer complaints and concerns process is outlined further below. The parent/carer process also applies to students who are mature minors, refer to: Mature Minors and Decision Making.
Other ways you can raise a concern or complaint with us include:
• talking to a member of the student leadership team about your concern and any suggestions you have for resolving it
• participating in our Attitudes to School Survey (for Years 4-12)
