Ils ont trouvé trois personnes blessées, dont un homme qui semblait avoir été blessé par balle. Il a été transporté à l’hôpital pour le traitement de blessures mettant sa vie en danger. Un autre homme a également été trans- porté à l’hôpital pour le traitement de bles- sures mettant sa vie en danger, bien que le dossier d’incident de la police ne précise pas la nature des blessures. Une femme aurait également subi des blessures graves, mais
sa vie ne serait pas en danger. La nature de ses blessures n’a pas été précisée. Le rapport d’incident de la PPO indique qu’il n’y a aucune raison de s’inquiéter pour le public. L’inspecteur de police James Gorry dirige l’enquête en cours. NO INJURIES FOLLOWING TWO-VEHICLE CRASH COMING SOON
An accident involving two vehicles left five occupants shaken, but unscathed. The accident took place at about 1 pm, June 26, on highway 17, near Rockland Manor. “The accident was between a commercial dump truck and a minivan,” stated Clarence-Rockland Fire Chief Brian Wilson. “No one was seriously injured.” Local firefighters checked out the occupants of the minivan upon getting on scene, waiting for paramedics. None of the passengers were brought to hospital. Russell Detachment Ontario Provincial Police officers closed one lane of Highway 17, before re-opening it shortly after 1:45 pm. Prescott-Russell’s ambulance ser- vices is now the target of a Ministry of Health investigation. “They have launched two separate investigations on us,” said Michel Chré- tien, director of emergency services for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR). The focus of the investigations is the “silent running” protocol that Prescott- Russell ambulance services adopted, June 4, as part of the long-running battle between the UCPR, the City of Ottawa, and Ontario’s Health Ministry over out-of-town ambulance calls. Ottawa owes the UCPR more than $1 million in costs for use of Prescott-Russell ambulance units to handle some of the city’s emergency calls. Ottawa claims it is under no legal obligation to pay and conti- nues to make use of UCPR ambulances. Provincial policy for ambulance dis- patch requires units to respond when required, even if the call is in a neighboring jurisdiction. Ottawa’s demand on PR ambu- lance units has been so great, sometimes that there are none available when UCPR residents need ambulance service.

where he does some pull ups, every time he enters or leaves.” A member of the renowned Rideau Canoe Club, Benoit began his paddling adventure CBDLJOi.ZNPUIFSJTUIFPOFXIP asked me if I wanted to take a two-week class at the Petrie Island Canoe Club,” he explained. “I took it and really enjoyed it. Then I went back the year after that.” From there, Benoit took part in the full summer camp, which lasted the better part of July and August. The young man does point out, however, that he only started competing on a professional level in 2016. That’s the year he won his first ever gold medal. His win also cemented his local fame; he had won the first gold medal for the Petrie Island Canoe Club. “It was the Ontario Championship,” Benoit recalls. “It was a two-kilometer race and there were about 20 kayakers. It was one kilometer one way, then we had to turn and do another one kilometer.” The race ended up being a nail-bitter, for Benoit did not have the best of starts. “It was a really close finish,” he admitted. “I wasn’t doing too good at first, but I managed to pass everyone coming back. I usually have a strong finish. I constantly build up my speed.” The young man is what his father calls a tactical racer.
Fifteen-year-old Benoit Davies isn’t afraid of getting wet or being sunburned. The young man is quite literally Rockland’s only flatwater sprint kayaker. “Chase your dream, train hard and give it all you’ve got,” he answers when asked if he has any words to offer other athletes his age. Already boas- ting several medals, some of them gold, as well as ribbons, Benoit is on the road to becoming quite a successful kayaker. In doing so, the young athlete has had to train for several hours a day. “In the summer, I train during the week, from about 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. in the morning, then from about 6:00 at night to 8:30 a.m.,” he said, his proud father standing nearby. “On weekends, I train on the water.” The young man also follows a strict, high protein diet. “Over the course of winter, he gained about 20 pounds, and that’s muscle,” Paul Davies, patriarch of the family, added. “He eats five times a day, devouring high calorie and high protein meals or shakes, even his snacks are high energy. He spends time each day doing mental kayak races where in his mind he is winning, losing, or is neck and neck with an opponent, and he imagines what he must do to be first. Taking an active part in the sport can be quite expensive, as the Davies learned. Paul points to a nearby kayak, sitting on two lawn chairs. “That was Ben’s first kayak,” he said. “It used to be owned by Caroline Brunet, an Olympian. It was $1,200 and it was used.” The young man’s father points to a little fin like portion found under the boat. “It even has a rudder, so Ben can turn it,” he explained. “It’s turned with the feet.” The young man moves a small rope inside the canoe to make the rudder turn from side to side. Benoit’s newest kayak, which is also used, cost $2,000. But that’s not even half of it. The young man lifts his long paddle and promptly takes it apart in two pieces. “I can adjust how long I want it or in what angle I want it,” he said, expertly adjusting the small metal middle portion of it. On June 27, 62 students from St. Francis-Xavier Catholic High School crossed the graduate stage. “I want to congratulate each and every one of you,” said Vice-Principal Tracey Clarey, during the ceremony that took place in the school gymnasium and welcomed over 100 parents, friends, and family members of the graduates. During the graduation, several students were hailed for their high grades. Amongst them were A. J. Beaudette, David Cadieux, Isaac Conroy-St.Amour, Frederick Gagnier Sydney Kravitz, Cassidy Laflèche, Takuya -BQMBOUF -PHBO.BD%POBME "EBN.BSUFM and Jaime Pepper, who all were recipients of the coveted St. Francis Xavier Highest Dis- tinction Award. The latter honored students who achieved minimum overall average of 90 per cent in six grade twelve courses. UNE FÊTE DU CANADA ROUGE DE MONDE AU PARC DU MOULIN
Une fois de plus, le parc du Moulin, à Rockland, a été l’hôte de la fête du Canada. Plusieurs activités étaient prévues au programme, surtout pour les petits. Ils ont pu assister au spectacle d’un magicien chimiste qui les a bien amusés. Malgré la chaleur, tous sont restés pour ne pas manquer les clowneries de ce drôle de chimiste. La journée s’est clôturée par un feu d’artifice qui a éclairé le ciel étoilé de Rockland. —photo Annie Lafortune

Ils sont venus présenter différentes espèces et les petits comme les grands ont été très impressionnés.
