As they kicked off the U-21 Provincials at the Russell Curling Club, some special guests had some things they wanted to pass along to the curlers and to the individuals coming out to enjoy good curling. The president of the Russell Curling Club, Ghislain Lagacé, led with the opening re- marks: “When we held this event in 2012, a local team won this championship. It was skipped by Jamie Sinclair. She now plays in the US Curling Circuit. Hopefully one day, we see one of you play at this level.” The OCA Director Elaine Brimicombe followed with a few words as well as MP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Francis Dr- ouin, who wished all the participants a great tournament. He actually shares the passion for curl- ing being a member himself and playing in an amateur league. MP Grant Crack did plan on being there but got stopped by the snowstorm that was scooping out outside last Tuesday. Mayor Pierre Leroux thanked the Club and its members for their commitment and making a lasting contribution to the Russell Township community.

The Russell Curling Club was proud to welcome the 2017 U 21 Men and Women Provincial Curling Championship from January 4 to 8. For the second time in the past six years, Russell was chosen to host 16 teams of the best male and female curlers under the age of 21 from across Ontario who have qualified in their regional cham- pionships. “Last time we hosted it here people raved about it,” said Dave Hutchison, Event Coor- dinator of the Ontario Curling Association (OCA). “Russell put in a bid to host it again so it was a no-brainer to come here. It’s just a good spot with great people, a great com- munity and good ice conditions.” Can’t break tradition As the custom demands and because of the Scottish influences on the sport, a procession of 16 teams was piped in dur- ing the official opening ceremonies and a traditional whiskey was also consumed. A special saxophone rendition of the national anthem was also delivered.

—photo Vicky Charbonneau
