Predation Regeneration Our ambition : a collective mental model shift

Our vision

The regenerative economy requires a change of mental model. Putting an end to the predation of natural, human and also financial resources. Adopting regeneration in a logic of taking care of the living. And a change of economic model to address both short-term and long-term issues. Finally, it calls for a re-alignment of stakeholders at the local level to jointly deliver socio-ecosystemic services with a change in governance to give a voice to all stakeholders in the quality of life in a territory, including nature and future generations, since we are all alive. Health, well-being and social justice are at the heart of the approach.

1- Towards regeneration

REGENERATION ?

Regeneration puts life at the center of every action and decision Paul Hawken Regeneration means to transform and develop a collaborative relationship with nature Bill Reed, principal at Regenesis Group Successful regeneration means to evolve and continually develop new potential Reed et al

INTRODUCTION

For those of us who look at business as a force for positive change (social, environmental, economic), regenerative mindset invites us to integrate a greater diversity, inclusion and equity into our organization’s purpose, culture, activities and development. The regenerative economy allows humans to co-evolve with the natural systems around them and reverse degenerative systems (Mang & Reed, 2013). Indeed its purpose is to allow a collective to assist nature in its ability to regenerate by contributing to an ecosystem service Thus, the regenerative economy goes further than the functional economy and the circular economy, which do not regenerate the resources essential to the health of ecosystems. Regenerative Brands focus on having a net positive impact on people and the planet. Regeneration is a mindset applied across the entirety of the business, from sourcing materials to how products are manufactured, from the way consumers, employees and partners can evolve over time in the most healthy environment. Brands with products issued from regenerative agriculture are at the interface between pleasure, health, responsibility and culture. Regenerative agriculture is a holistic agro-ecological approach that regenerates ecosystems, especially soils, and keeps them in a resilient state. It holds many promises, not only positive environmental promises but also social promises and economic outcomes for farmers. By preserving the functioning of the soil, regenerative agriculture not only preserves carbon storage, thus contributing to the fight against global warming, but also the fertility of cultivated land in the face of desertification, and even... the health of consumers ! The product innovations sourced from regenerative agriculture are already available to Americans, Australians.... In this series of trend reports you will discover which brands have invested in regenerative agriculture. Which products they have launched. Which claims have they made ? The level of transparency from farm to fork ? Which certifications ? Which impacts ?

REGENERATIVE BRANDS PROVIDE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES Regeneration aims to give all living beings (including humans) the resources needed to reach their full potential in their environment*. It builds on circular economy -moving from a take-make-waste linear economy to a circular economy leaves more room for nature to thrive, but it goes further to give back to nature more than what was taken through natural processes, assisting nature regeneration.

*Ecosystem services aim to restore vital resources to living beings in their habitat. The health of all living things is interconnected #onehealth

The urgency of regeneration

Planetary boundaries have already been crossed for biodiversity and land change.

THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF INTENSIVE AGRICULTURE ON SOILS

Growing food through intensive industrial methods has devastated our soils. Forecasts have predicted that global topsoils will deplete in 60 years at our current rate (source)

A 2008 report entitled "Global soil degradation" estimated that land degradation (about 2 billion hectares of land worldwide) affects 38% of the world’s cropland and has reduced water and nutrient availability (quality and access).

THE STATE OF BIODIVERSITY

At least 10,000 species are going extinct every year. Addressing the long-term consequences of biodiversity loss through the lens of this level is critical in fighting to work against species extinction for global health.

This map (NatureMap Explorer) focuses on the Global and Ecoregion levels of Biodiversity. Many others are available, including the World Database of Key Biodiversity Areas and the Global Forest Watch map.

THE URGENCY OF REGENERATION

It is therefore imperative for companies to turn to regenerative models and not only reduce their negative externalities (its not greenwashing it’s just maths)

WHAT IS REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE ?

There is no consensus on a definition. -Some definitions are process based to define a singular agriculture (like organic agriculture). -Some definitions are outcome based to define what types of agriculture are regenerative. Variations in Definitions of Regenerative Agriculture

Source Note : Research has observed that application of synthetic and artificial fertilizers contribute to climate change through (i) the energy costs of production and transportation of the fertilizers, (ii) chemical breakdown and migration into water resources and the atmosphere; (iii) the distortion of soil microbial communities including the diminution of soil methanothrops, and (iv) the accelerated decomposition of soil organic matter.

WHAT IS REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE ? “A system of farming principles and practices that increases biodiversity, enriches soils, improves watersheds, and enhances ecosystem services” . Terra Genesis International, 2020. “Regenerative Agriculture” describes farming and grazing practices that, among other benefits, reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil

biodiversity – resulting in both carbon drawdown and improving the water cycle. regenerationinternational

Regenerative agriculture practices

Regenerative agriculture is a subdivision of organic agriculture. It takes the best of organic farming, and expands on its principles by looking at what are the best practices to promote the health of soil, animals, labor and farmers. And unlike organic farming, regenerative farming is not geared towards conservation, but rather towards improvement, especially for future generations.

REGENERATION IMPROVES SOIL CAPABILITIES

ALL POSITIVE IMPACTS OF REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE The benefits of regenerative agriculture include:

● Increased soil organic matter and biodiversity. ● Healthier and more productive soil that is drought- and flood-resilient. ● Decreased use of chemical inputs and subsequent pollution. ● Cleaner air and water. ● Enhanced wildlife habitat. ● Carbon captured in the soil to combat climate variability.

REGENERATION IMPROVES ECOSYSTEMS BIOCAPACITIES

INVESTING IN REGENERATION BEYOND SUSTAINABILITY Instead of fixing problems, investors focus on generating new potential — novel business models, innovative food products and eating innovations, new agricultural approaches, and enterprise ecosystems that are deeply in harmony with the long term story of the place.

The principles of regeneration

REGENERATIVE BRANDS PART 1 - THE CLIMATE SOIL STORY

1- CIRCULAR DESIGN TO REDUCE IMPACTS 2- CLAIMING REDUCED CARBON EMISSIONS 3- CAPTURING CARBON EMISSIONS FOR CONSUMERS 4- FEATURING REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE 5- TAKING PRIDE IN DISTINCTIVE SOIL PRACTICES 6- TAKING PRIDE IN DISTINCTIVE SEA PRACTICES

1- CIRCULARITY TO REDUCE BRAND IMPACTS The third principle of circular economy is to regenerate nature. Yet circularity is essential but not sufficient for regeneration. A circular economy makes use of various strategies such as reducing, reusing and recycling that together eliminate waste, lower material and resource consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To be regenerative the process needs to go beyond restauration with multiple - integrated - holistic - positive contributions (climate AND biodiversity, soils AND water, nature AND humans, overall well being / health of living beings).

WE STAND FOR REGENERATION “Our vision is circular and regenerative; we aim at restoring the environmental balance between human beings and nature, giving back what we already received ” - Davide Bollati, Chairman of Davines. WE STAND for regeneration with regenerative organic Barbera grape pomace extract from Mr. Cunials vineyard in Parma. Source

The principles of regeneration

2- PRODUCTS CLAIMING REDUCED CARBON EMISSIONS Regenerative agriculture improves the soil's capacity to sequester carbon from atmosphere. Some brands are on a carbon mission to reduce emissions. Among those some aim for net zero by 2030. Since for clothing and food brands 70% of emissions come from farming, new farming methods are the solution. Regenerative to the general public is a romantic notion. But carbon is real.

CARBON NEUTRAL MILK - ACHIEVED ONLY THROUGH FARMING PRACTICES

Founder Albert Straus and seaweed-supplement maker Blue Ocean Barns demonstrated a dramatic climate change solution, reducing dairy cows’ enteric methane emissions an average of 52% and up to 90% by supplementing the cows’ diet with a specific red seaweed (Asparagopsis taxiformis) in the first U.S. commercial trial on a dairy farm in 2021. The red seaweed has the potential to reduce cows’ enteric methane emissions up to 95%. This is accomplished by feeding the dairy cows roughly one ounce of red seaweed as part of their regular 45-pound diet. On top of organic regenerative practices. Source

PLANT BASED ALTERNATIVES, NATURALLY CARBON NEUTRAL Wide Open Agriculture has developed an eco-friendly plant based protein from Australian Sweet Lupin, a legume crop similar to soybeans, but with a higher fibre and lower fat content. The protein is designed to have a low carbon footprint, and can be farmed using regenerative farming systems. The “techno-function and eco-credentials” of the product have been highlighted by the Company as competitive advantages compared to other similar products. SOURCE

3- CAPTURING CARBON EMISSIONS FOR CONSUMERS Projects contributing to net zero goals and possibly generating offsets vary a lot by project type (renewable energy, carbon capture & storage, avoided deforestation), type of action on carbon emissions (reduction, removal) and features (notably whether carbon is stored or not with implications for the permanency of abatement effects). What’s new is that consumers can contribute to those through their daily shopping.

FARMED FOR OUR FUTURE TO REVERSE CLIMATE CHANGE

They are committed to a movement towards a happier and healthier future for our children. They source oats from a ROC™ Silver farm meeting the highest standards in the world for soil health, animal welfare, and farmworker fairness. Source

CONSUMERS CAN MEASURE CARBON IMPACT WITH OATLY Oatly was among the first brands to see success with oats as an alternative milk base, and now they’re further setting themselves apart on shelf with the use of a carbon label. The calculations for a product’s rating include everything in the product lifespan from farm to store and everything in between (like packaging and transport). The rating is prominently displayed on the front of every milk carton, with more information offered on their website. Source

4- FEATURING REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE Brands aim at delivering various ecosystem services at once : removing carbon dioxide from the air and improving soil health. Indeed the key to soils reaching their full potential to store carbon is keeping soils healthy. A set of graphics from Climate Central show the maximum amount of carbon dioxide that cropland soils in each state could absorb annually through adoption of practices that promote soil health. https://www.climatecentral.org/graphic/farmers-markets?graphicSet=State

CERTIFIED REGENERATIVE “Our approach to regenerating the soil through our planned grazing of both the dairy cattle and the chickens, and our holistic approach to farming is both good for the land, and good for people. We are putting carbon back into the soil, sequestering that carbon in an effort to reverse climate change” “ We are building our soil, our own carbon farm, from the ground up, utilizing cows and chickens to move carbon out of the atmosphere and back into the Earth’s soil. This is our regenerative, organic approach”. Source

GOING BEYOND USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC STANDARDS Kalona SuperNatural Organic Whole Milk Plain Yogurt is from 100% grass-fed cows on small family farms that restore the environment. To be certified organic, cows must be grazed on pasture for a minimum of 120 days per year. They went beyond this organic standard. They describe their farms as e cological oasis that rejuvenate soil, protect watersheds, and store carbon. Source

The principles of regeneration 5- TAKING PRIDE IN DISTINCTIVE SOIL PRACTICES Some brands have made the choice to communicate on their regenerative practices as a distinctive feature to gain consumer preference. The focus is on these practices rather than on a specific consumer benefit.

SOIL PRACTICES

CROP ROTATION

Consumers are looking for regenerative agriculture practices such as crop rotation to be identified on products like this one from Varietal Crop Crackers. Alpha Food Labs sells Varietal Crop Crackers, which offers the crop rotation list on each package for years 1 to 3. For example, its year 2 crop rotation crackers list is Dark Northern spring wheat, millet and flax. Source

1- HEALTHY SOILS, HEALTHY PLANET It is estimated that 95% of our food is directly or indirectly produced on our soils. Healthy soils are the foundation of the food system. (source) Our soils are the basis for agriculture and the medium in which nearly all food-producing plants grow. Healthy soils produce healthy crops that in turn nourish people and animals. Indeed, soil quality is directly linked to food quality and quantity.

As consumers increasingly recognize t he impact their food choices have on their own health as well as that of the planet, Simple Mills has become a staple in millions of American households. “ I became interested in regenerative agriculture and how we can use food as a force for both human and planetary health”. Katlin Smith, founder of Simple Mills. Simple Mills crackers, cookies, bars and baking mixes are sold in more than 28,000 natural and conventional stores across the country. Source

HUMAN HEALTH CAN’T TRULY EXIST WITHOUT CONSIDERING THE HEALTH OF OUR PLANET.

White Leaf Provisions believes that healthy food starts with healthy soil. “The health of the planet and the health of our communities are linked. Keith Rowe of White Leaf Provisions. source

2- BOOSTED NUTRIENT DENSITY Nutrient density, functionally, describes higher levels of nutrients and beneficial secondary plant metabolites per unit of volume. Nutrient dense food is virtually the opposite of ‘empty calories’. One well cited study by Donald Davis found that the average nutrient content of most vegetables and fruits have declined dramatically over the past 50–70 years. As the Bionutrient Food Association states, “The problem is, we now live in a world where natural foods, can be nutrient poor. Even organic and local foods can be low in nutrition, depending on the growing practices, season and seed.”

3- SUPER AGRICULTURE FOR SUPER POWERFUL FOOD Nutritionally speaking, there is no such thing as a superfood. Though many foods could be described as super, it’s important to understand that there is no single food that holds the key to good health or disease prevention. The food industry bestows the superfood label on nutrient-rich foods with a supposed capacity to positively affect health.

Açaï is known for its unparalleled anti-oxidant action. Awi Superfoods is a food-for-good tech company that promotes regenerative nutrition spanning agroforestry and biofactories.. “Our team ventures into different regions of Brazil to select natural ingredients with high nutritional power, offering superfoods with more flavor and energy” Derek Brett Gallo “We believe in human health and forest regeneration as a way to generate true global transformation!!!” SOURCE

MICRO ORGANISMS CAN HAVE BIOLOGIC ACTIVITY IN THE HOST When we want to achieve the most nourishing food outcomes, we need to maximize nutrients, while minimizing anti-nutrients, toxins, and agricultural pollutants. In general, fermenting foods increases the nutrient content and the bioavailability of nutrients, decreases anti-nutrients (phytic acid, lectins, oxalic acid, tannins), toxins (heavy metals and mycotoxins), and agricultural pollutants (glyphosate and other herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fumigants). Glyphosate, for example, is reduced by 65% in sauerkraut compared to pre-fermentation levels on the cabbage according to one lab we talked to. “There are other potential health benefits we plan to study as well. For example, post-biotics: “non-viable bacterial products or metabolic products from microorganisms that have biologic activity in the host.” Tim Richards philosopher foods source

PRESERVING WHAT MAKES INGREDIENTS NATURALLY HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS When gut microbes consume fibre, they produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as Acetate, Propionate and Butyrate. It is these SCFAs that have beneficial health properties.“Most beets in processing, like 20% to 30% of them, get wasted,” Mr. Mourad said. “We’re using the peel and the top and the bottom. It’s good for the consumer, they’re getting more fiber and nutrition, and there’s less waste.” THEO's chefs up new veggie-forward foods that deliver on both amazing flavor and nutrition. SOURCE

A WAY OF LIVING Drawing on the Maori tradition of kaitiakitanga, the Tiaki Promise asks visitors to act as proud guardians whilst exploring New Zealand, placing the responsibility in the hands of the visitor by encouraging them to adhere to a set of principles that have the best interests of New Zealand at heart. These ‘pillars’ include driving carefully, protecting nature, keeping New Zealand clean, showing respect for local customs and being prepared for New Zealand’s changeable weather and rural landscapes. These simple steps are designed to ensure that New Zealand can be enjoyed for many generations to come, whilst keeping visitors safe and ensuring every visit to New Zealand is as fulfilling and memorable as possible. source

Regeneration ?

Regeneration means putting life at the center of every action and decision. It is inclusive, engaging, and generous. Paul Hawken Regeneration : restoring nature so humans and natural systems can coexist and coevolve in harmony . Bill Reed, principal at Regenesis Group A regeneration is successful if it develops new potentials. Successfully regenerated ecosystems become places people want to live in, work in and visit Reed et al

Regeneration goes beyond sustainability

Reconciling Planet, People and Profit for a positive impact is not possible ? Often profit is the key focus. CSR strategies are a form of compensation in sustainable development (business as usual +charity) It is now a matter of “to reducing (stopping) negative impacts” AND to “give back more than we take” to nature (including humans). All living beings have a powerful but limited biocapacity to regenerate.

THE REGENERATIVE BUSINESS MODEL

Our Business Model Canvas of the Regenerative company – (REGEN)BMC – makes it possible to identify areas of degeneration, he potential for regeneration of a company's economic activity and to identify new regenerative products and services to be launched i n a collaborative approach with a set of stakeholders brought together. It is a process structured over 5 workshops which allows each entity involved in the value chain of a product/service to integrate the socio-economic services to be provided into its own area of responsibility . Each stakeholder is thus able to anticipate the new processes to be implemented in shared governance. We are developing sectoral consulting versions of REGEN BMC to meet the specific needs of businesses and local authorities: food, fashion, alcohol, construction, tourism, banking and digital. And a coaching version of REGEN BMC for start-ups .
