Israeli Group: Cohen, Hishtil and Jaldety Arizona Series Thunbergia

Undoubtedly the most exciting introduction of this site were the new colors in the Arizona series of thunbergia. These were not your typical colors (or flower sizes). These mega-sized blooms came in colors completely dif- ferent from anything we’ve ever seen before. Crystal clear whites and bright vivid pinks are certainly going to add some new life to the class. Fast growing with an abun- dance of flowers, these will be a great addition to vine programs next spring. The Arizona series now has a total of 8 varieties with the 3 new ones this year: Pink, Rose Sensation andWhite Halo. Crimson & Gold Oxalis What’s so cool about this? Typically we think of oxalis as being strictly an ornamental foliage crop, but this new oxalis tuberosum from Hishtil have these large edible tubers; about the size of fingerling potatoes. These tubers are full of Vitamin B, C and iron and make a great treat at the end of the season for the gardener. Glow Series Petunias This medium vigor series of petunias is well suited for gallon and larger containers, and is recognized by the bright eye- catching colors across the line. They are generally early varieties, performing in lower light and temperatures, for great first-to-market plants. Tropical Pink and Stardust were two colors in this year’s show that really grabbed our attention. Jessica’s Sweet Pear Mint No, this is not a pear-flavored mint, but rather pear shaped in habit. Unlike traditional mints that spread and invade an entire herb combination container, Jessica’s Sweet Pear has a most unique upright habit—one that we’ve never seen before in this genus.

Veranda Blue Picotee This was the most impressive new selection in the Veranda Series. The blue and white picotee is a striking pattern and the flowers change to various shades of blue as they age, adding further dimension to the plant. Very early to flower,Veranda Blue Picotee is a great early season starter and can be programmed for late February sales through the remainder of spring. The full plants have great weather tolerance and bounce back quickly from summer rains. They have a strong habit that will easily fill out hanging baskets and patio containers.

Veranda Blue Picotee

Veranda Compact Sugar Plum Petunia Veranda Compact Sugar Plum sets the standard for a new series being developed by Kientzler. The plant habit stays compact without chemical growth regulators and maintains tight density throughout the greenhouse production and throughout its life in the garden. Compact Sugar Plum is early to flower and can be scheduled with reliable natural flowering from late February though the spring. The compact nature makes them ideal for 4-inch containers, but they offer enough vigor to be used in hanging baskets and combination planters as well.

PAC Impacio ® New Guinea Impatiens

We all know PAC for their world-class geranium breeding, but this new series of new guinea impatiens has some real potential to be an industry-leading line. The key messaging on these new guineas is that they do not require warmer temperatures like traditional new guinea crops. This means a grower can put these in side-by-side with their calibrachoas, petunias, lobelias and not have a longer crop time, but finish them on a standard new guinea schedule. That’s big news, especially for small to mid-sized growers that don’t want to break out too many different growing zones. Besides growing cooler than other new guineas, the Impacio line was trialed last summer in Australia with outstanding tolerance to heat and sun. The series is launched with 17 colors for a full spectrum of color. Cassiopeia ® Geranium This was an early release last year with limited availability, but Cassiopeia has made its mark as a strong candidate in the interspecific geranium market. The plants are much more well-branched than industry-standard type interspecifics with smaller leaves, so it can be done in smaller containers earlier in the season without the use of chemical growth regulators. There is still just 1 color available, but the rich velvety red is definitely in demand. Darko ® Geranium The Darko line from PAC has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, mainly due to the really dark green foliage that highlights the flower color better and the more compact habit that allows the plants to be produced in quart containers without chemical growth regulators. The 3 new varieties, Blue, Soft Pink and SpanishWine Rosé all have unique flower colors that contrast great against the foliage.

Frostkiss varieties also bloom 1 year from planting, vs. the 2 years that traditional varieties take. Proven Winners Perennials Fruit Punch ® Classic Coral Dianthus

Classic Coral brings a completely new color to the Fruit Punch series. These plants were putting on quite the show with striking double- coral blooms over a tight mound of blue-green foliage. The blooms were very fragrant, making them a great impulse buy at retail when displayed in a large mass. As with the rest of the Fruit Punch series, Classic Coral is heat and humidity tolerant, so plants will come into reflower through the summer if they are sheared back after the first bloom. The plants are reported to be hardy through Zone 4. Primo™ Wild Rose Heuchera This easily distinguishable heuchera stood out with its large leaves and bright, uniquely colored foliage. The plants form a dense habit of large, bright rosy-purple leaves with deep charcoal gray veining. The prominent dark veining really allows the foliage color to pop, making it a great choice for shade. Upright, dark burgundy-rose flower scapes have matching dark buds that open to rosy pink flowers. Primo is a new line from ProvenWinners, which are faster growing and more aggressive in the landscape than Dolce varieties. Winecraft Black™ Cotinus Winecraft Black is the first Proven Winners smokebush, so you know it must be special. In spring, round leaves emerge rich purple but as summer’s heat comes on, they turn a deep near-black tone and finally light up in an array of reds and oranges in fall. In early summer, large, soft panicles of bloom appear that become the misty “smoke” that makes this such a popular landscape plant. Unlike other smokebush varieties, it naturally has a rounded, dwarf habit, which allows it to fit in more tidy garden spaces. At Last ® Rose Proven Winners is very excited to introduce their new fragrant, disease free rose…At Last! This rose combines all the romance of a fragrant, fully-petaled tea rose with the no-nonsense practicality of a disease-resistant landscape rose. No spraying is required to enjoy a non-stop display of large, sweetly perfumed sunset-orange blossoms from late spring through frost.
