Musahamaat Fikriyya – Constructs of Creativity

tracing the many ways people signal to one another across distance and difference. In Wiswās , Alaa Edris approaches Washwasha through Emirati colloquial usage, where it can suggest interfer- ence or confusion. Three wooden self-portraits with an- imatronic eyes scan the space as a soundscape of data, dripping water and computerised announcements turns time itself into a loop of beginning, middle and end. Taus Makhacheva closes the exhibition with two works that look at the comic and anxious failures of commu- nication. In one, 52 speakers release overlapping email apologies into the room; in the other, gossip is treated as movement, speech, care, harm and social transmission. The exhibition is accompanied by a programmatic activa- tion inspired by the 1961 founding of Ajman Radio. Estab- lished by veteran broadcaster Salem Obaid Alaleeli and his cousin Rashid bin Abdullah bin Hamdah using ru- dimentary equipment, the station broadcasted from bin Hamdah’s home and reached audiences as far as Kuwait, fostering early communal connection through sound. Together, the works make the UAE audible not as a single story, but as a place of migration, memory, language, correspondence and layered forms of listening. Here, Shawati’ speaks to Curator, Bana Kattan about the making of Washwasha , the artists and ideas behind the ex- hibition, and how sound, memory, language and tech- nology come together. Now that Washwasha has opened in Venice Biennale, what has stayed with you most from the first respons- es to the exhibition?
During the opening days, I was surprised by how deeply non-Arabic speakers engaged with the title Washwasha , seeming to understand it through its onomatopoeic qual- ity alone. Its meaning resides in the sound itself: quiet, suggestive, and open-ended - and visitors really seemed to intuitively pick up on that. I was also surprised by how differently people moved through the exhibition, espe- cially since the floorplan is a sequential footpath where you encounter one artwork at a time. Because of the di- versity of mediums and themes, each visitor seemed to leave having formed a strong connection to a particular work, idea, or emotion, often in ways that differed com- pletely from one person to another. That multiplicity of responses felt true to the spirit of the exhibition. The title Washwasha carries meaning through sound before language. Why did this word become the an- chor for the exhibition? Washwasha is all about subtlety. A phonetic transliteration of theArabic word for“whispering,” Washwasha refers not only to hushed speech, but also to subtle forms of com- munication, to murmurs, background noise, and in- tangible traces that risk going unnoticed. What attract- ed me to Washwasha as both a concept and a title was its simplicity. It’s just one word, but it holds a complete idea in a very concise form, and even if you don’t speak Ara- bic, you’ll understand it. What also interested me about the word is that it derives from a four-letter root, which is rare compared to most other Arabic words that stem from three root letters. Thinking about it linguistically was fascinating to me, especially because language and sound are so deeply intertwined.
