Musahamaat Fikriyya – Constructs of Creativity

at the Arsenale poses serious challenges when it comes to controlling sound bleed, and so Koray and the contracting team brilliantly worked on solutions to help minimise the travel of sound in that way. Why these six artists: Mays Albaik, Jawad Al Malhi, Farah Al Qasimi, Alaa Edris, Lamya Gar- gash and Taus Makhacheva? I have known these artists for many years and have closely followed the development of their practices. They all work across multiple disciplines, often engaging with sound, poetry, storytelling, or other intangible cultural forms as integral elements of their work. Each one of them brought a different perspective to Washwasha , and together they form a dialogue that reflects the depth of the artistic practices connected to the UAE. How do the newly commissioned works speak to the existing works in the exhibition? The connections are plentiful. For example, Jawad Al Malhi’s work also speaks to Mays Al- baik’s newly commissioned work as they both consider oral histories. Taus Makhacheva’s ex- isting piece speaks to Alaa Edris’s new work in terms of technology and the contemporary anxieties that accompany our hyper-connect- ed world. Ultimately, there are ongoing and overlapping conversations between the works that activate Washwasha .

The exhibition moves from quiet, close listening to- wards noise, overlap and hyper-connectivity. How did you work with the space in Venice at the Arsenale to achieve this effect? We were lucky to collaborate with the wonderful Büro Koray Duman [B–KD] Architects, who worked with us to design the space with the body in mind. You experience the exhibition as you walk through three chambers, with some of them requiring close listening while others are consumed by noise and sonic overlap. More practically, the exhibition design also considers the acoustic signa- ture of the building itself. As part of our curatorial re- search process, we studied the evolution of architectural construction and how engineers developed ways to con- trol the behaviour of sound in space. The pavilion space
