Musahamaat Fikriyya – Constructs of Creativity

memory beyond formal archives. This appears in the form of oral histories as seen in Jawad Al Malhi and Mays Albaik’s works, in storytelling as seen in Taus Makhache- va’s and Lamya Gargash’s, in language and poetry as seen in Mays’ and Alaa Edris’s, or in music and communica- tion as seen in Farah Al Qasimi’s work. The show begins with communal sounds, oral histo- ries and wedding rituals – was that a call back to the oral histories of the previous generations? Yes. Jawad Al Malhi’s installation Naiman [2008/2026] com- prises five sound recordings of men in their seventies re- calling the celebratory rituals performed on the eve of their wedding. In Palestine, there was a tradition of the bachelor going with his friends to the bathhouse, and in this work specifically, each of the five recorded men went to Ham- mam Al Ayn, a historic bathhouse in East Jerusalem. Today, none of these men are still with us, and the bathhouse no longer still operates, so the work helps us to recall their sto- ries and the stories of this historic place. The exhibition also honours veteran broadcaster Sa- lem Obaid Alaleeli, Ajman Radio, and the programme Voice of the Country . How did this sonic history of the UAE become part of the curatorial research? This was in fact one of the first areas of research we ex- plored while developing the exhibition, so the curatori- al process really began with the UAE and this history in mind. At only 12 years old, Salem Obaid Alaleeli cofound- ed Ajman’s first radio station alongside his cousin Rashid bin Abdullah bin Hamdah. This moment marks a period when sound and broadcasting still functioned as a means of collective presence, as opposed to contemporary sound practices that focus on de-amplification and isolation. Another sonic artwork, from a much more recent history, which also informed our curatorial inspiration for Wash- washa was Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s 2024 installation Wsh Wsh at the inaugural Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. Wsh Wsh activated five public fountains along the Abu Dhabi corniche with contemporary sound technologies. The work’s title evokes the sound of water splashing, while

The exhibition spans generations and disciplines. How important was it for you to avoid presenting one fixed idea of UAE contemporary practice? While the artists in this exhibition do not represent a survey of the artist demographics that make up the UAE arts scene [for example, we have plenty of amazing South Asian artists in the UAE, and none in the show], I did want to highlight the diversity of artistic practices in the UAE. The exhibition is intentionally multi-generational, but most importantly it presents artists whose practices engage deeply with sound, language, and memory, while offering distinct artistic methodologies. Also, within the UAE, as within any country, it is impossible to reduce a place or its people to a single identity. It is much more in- teresting than that, and it is this multiplicity that makes up the rich arts scene we have, which is reflected in the range of voices brought together in this exhibition. Of course, no exhibition can fully encompass the totality of perspectives within a place, and this project should be understood as one contribution to a much broader and ongoing conversation. The press material describes sound as a starting point to explore the intangible. What kinds of intangibility were you most interested in? By foregrounding intangible histories, such as oral tradi- tions, storytelling, language, and music, the exhibition highlights modes of knowledge that sustain collective
