structure designed to resist water and dust. This techni- cal idea sits at the heart of Rolex’s reputation for water- proofness, reliability, precision and durability. In 1931, Rolex developed the next major step in the Oys- ter’s evolution. The brand brought together its water- proof Oyster case with its newly patented self-winding Perpetual rotor, creating the Oyster Perpetual, Rolex’s first automatic waterproof wristwatch. Today, the Oys- ter Perpetual remains a current collection and one of the clearest expressions of the original concept. Over the following decades, Rolex continued to test the Oyster in demanding environments. The watches were
used by explorers, athletes, pilots, divers, scientists and mountaineers, allowing the brand to assess their strength and reliability outside the con- trolled conditions of a workshop. This practical testing became central to Rolex’s development process. The experience gained from the field helped refine the watches and strengthen their performance. The Oyster also grew with the brand. What began as a single watch be- came the basis for a wider family of models. The Oyster Perpetual contin- ued the original idea in its purest form, while models such as the Date- just, Submariner, GMT-Master, Explorer, Daytona and others carried the Oyster’s technical principles into different areas of use. Each model served a specific purpose, but all shared the same focus on precision, du- rability and trust.
