There’s still a drought, says South Nation Conservation Despite a rainy October, South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) jurisdiction remains in drought condi- tions. The western part of SNC’s jurisdiction, including Bearbrook, Castor and Upper South Nation River (Spencerville), has moved from a Severe (Level 3) to Moderate (Level 2) Drought Condition. The remainder of SNC’s jurisdiction is now in a Minor (Level 1) Drought Condition. Since issuing a Severe Drought Condition at the end of August, SNC’s Water Response Team has been closely monitoring precipitation and streamflow within the SNC jurisdiction. Thanks to recent rainfall events, streamflows within the Jurisdiction have improved, but are still recovering from the dry summer months. Of the three drought levels, a Level 1 indicates that there is the potential of a water supply problem should current precipitation and stream flow trends persist. A Level 2 condition indicates minor supply issues may be apparent and conservation and non-essential restriction is adopted, and a Level 3 condition indicates the failure of the water supply to meet demand. SNC asks residents, businesses, and other industries throughout the SNC jurisdiction to continue reducing their water consumption by 10 to 20 per cent, in order to help mitigate the impacts of low water conditions. Water consumption can be reduced by limiting non-essential uses. – Francis Racine

Fire chief appointed to board of national association Cornwall fire chief Pierre Voisine has been appointed to serve on the board of directors of the Canadian association of fire chiefs. Chief Voisine was appointed the board’s director-at-large and treasurer during a recent meeting of the CAFC in Ottawa. “It’s a huge honour to have been chosen by my peers to serve on the board,” said Voisine. “I look forward to helping with important fire safety issues nationally, which will ultimately benefit Cornwall.” Founded in 1909, the CAFC connects Canada’s provincial, territorial and allied associations and external partners for the advancement of public and firefighter safety. “Issues such as mental health for first responders, fire safe cigarettes and federal regulations on the movement of products by rail are but a few examples of the impact CAFC has had in Canada,” Voisine added. – Francis Racine

For the ninth year in a row, a partnership between South Nation Conservation and Delta Waterfowl has resulted in a fully subscribed Youth Hunt. This year’s group included 10 youth; 7 boys and 3 girls. The program is all about introducing local, young people to the Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Program, which includes the Hunters Safety course, and the Canadian Firearms course. For nine years running, all 10 available spots have been filled by young people, aged 12-15, keen to learn about hunting regulations, safety, and ethics. SNC Property and Approvals Assistant II, Phil Duncan, said the event is designed to get young hunters off on the right foot so they grow up practicing good values every time they go out. This year’s program took place over three weekends in September with a final goose hunt in October. As long as licenses are in place, safety regulations are closely followed, and permission is obtained in advance, hunting is permitted on many SNC forested properties across the 4,384 km2 jurisdiction. — supplied photo

New signs for Summerstown Trails

The Township of South Glengarry and the Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) held a joint press conference on Saturday, November 5, to unveil four new interpretive signs thatwill be installed at various locations on the cross-country ski and snowshoe trails at the Summerstown Forest. The unveiling took place at the beginning of the annual Clean-Up Day organized by FOTST to remove trash and complete maintenance work on the trails in preparation for the upcoming winter season. The production of these signs was made possible through a grant obtained from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TDFEF). Leigh MacDonald, branch manager of the TD Bank on 9 th Street in Cornwall, was in attendance representing the TDFEF. She explained that funds collected from employee and client donations, and matched by TD Bank, are granted to local organizations in support of environmental projects. While the TDFEF is a national charity, locally raised funds remain in the region. The interpretive signs were developed by the FOTST to inform trail users about the birds, trees and wetlands of Summerstown Forest, specifically targeting the thousands of grade school students who visit the trails every winter on school outings. Pictured are FOTST president Paul Couture, TD branch manager Leigh MacDonald, FOTST board member Jean-Pierre Tibi, South Glengarry mayor Ian McLeod, and SDG Counties warden Jamie MacDonald.

Canadian treasures CANADA: NATURAL SOURCE OF PRIDE SINCE 1867 Kenojuak Ashevak (1927–2013) INUIT GRAPHIC ARTIST AND SCULPTOR

Quiz TEST YOUR CANADIAN KNOWLEDGE

QUESTION 1: The 1989 American film Field of Dreams starring Kevin Costner was based on what Canadian novel?

the attention of artist James Houston, who encouraged Keno- juak—and others in the community—to explore creativity through different mediums. A graphic arts workshop and cooperative was opened in the area and became ameans for members of the com- munity—including Kenojuak—to supplement their income. Kenojuak created thousands of pieces during her lifetime and— almost from the get-go—received high praise for her efforts. Her colourful, imaginative depictions of animals and fanciful northern landscapes constitute some of the most emblematic examples of modern Canadian art. Her work has been widely shown over the years, from a 30-year retrospective of her career at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection Gallery in 1986 to the 2011 exhibition “Truly Canadian”: Inuit Art and National Identity at the Carleton University Art Gallery. Her talent has been commissioned for vari- ous projects, including multiple Canadian coins and stamps, a stained glass window at the John Bell Chapel in Oakville, Ontario, and a mural featured at the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, Japan. Kenojuak received countless awards—including the Governor General’s Award for Artistic Achievement in Visual and Media Arts in 2008 and the Order of Canada Companion in 1982—and wide- spread recognition for her artistic contributions. She passed away in 2013, but her pioneering work remains a lasting legacy of her talent and vision.

Kenojuak Ashevak helped define modern Inuit art, both in Canada and on the global art scene. While remembered primarily as a graphic artist, she alsomade stone-cut prints, etchings and soapstone carvings. Among her most recognized work is Enchanted Owl, a print that was reproduced on a Canadian postage stamp in the 1970s to commemorate the centennial of the Northwest Territories. A pioneering perspective on life in the Arctica

QUESTION 3: In what year was the first Canadian-based television broadcast?

Born in 1927, Kenojuak took her first breaths in an igloo within an Inuit camp off the southern coast of Baffin Island. The tribe she was part of was semi-nomadic and she grew up moving between a number of camps in the area. At the age of 19 she was married to aman named Jonniebo, with whom she had children and eventu- ally put down roots in Cape Dorset. In the 1950s, during a three-year stay at a Quebec hospital (where she was treated for tuberculosis) Kenojuakmet an art teacher and subsequently began crafting. She made beadwork and leather dolls during her hospitalization, but it was only upon her return to Cape Dorset that she took up drawing. Her early creations caught

Canada’s Korean community

One of Canada’s largest trading partners is also one of the country’s primary sources of immi- grants. As of the 2011 National Household Survey, 161,131 Canadians identified themselves as having Korean roots. While a first wave of Koreans came to Canada shortly after the Second World War, it was only after 1965 that their numbers became substantial.

Animal emblem: Canadian Inuit (Eskimo) dog

Korean-Canadians contribute to our nation’s rich offerings in every sector including the arts, academia, and athletics. Ac- tress Sandra Oh, News anchor and producer Mi-Jung Lee, NHL player Jim Paek, pianist Wonny Song and mathematician Rimhak Ree are just a few of the notable Korean-Canadians making significant strides both at home and internationally. The majority of Korean-Canadians live in Ontario (49 per cent) and British Columbia (35 per cent) with the remaining popu- lation scattered through the other provinces. Toronto has the most concentrated population—over 50,000—of Korean- Canadians and the city is home to Canada’s only Korea Town. The district has numerous restaurants, shops and grocery stores that cater to the community.

In 2000, Nunavut adopted the Canadian Inuit Dog as its animal emblem. Long-time residents of the arctic, these dogs were essential to the survival of the Inuit. They pulled sleds and also aided with polar bear and seal hunts. Also called quimmiq (an Inuit language word for “dog”) the breed is characterized as loyal, tough, brave and intelligent.

The Korean-Canadian population supports several newspapers both in Vancouver and in Toronto. Some major universities in Canada offer Korean Studies programs as well as student exchange programs with South Korea.

Our country’s population of Korean-Canadians continues to grow and add diverse richness to our national identity.

Longue Sault Public School (LSPS) teacher Ian Callan recently tested his limits for Terry Fox. The teacher undertook a 150-kilometre run on November 4 in order to raisemoney for the Terry Fox Foundation, and to help his school celebrate Canada’s upcoming Sesquicentennial. His run, which began early in the morning inWilliamstown, took him through Cornwall, Long Sault, Ingleside and then up to Ottawa. The physical literacy teacher said a big part of the run is to show area students they can push their personal limits and succeed. “It’s showing our kids that really, you don’t have any limits,” he expressed. “If you have a dream, and a goal, go out and achieve it.” Callan has a history of pushing his per- sonal limits. The ultra-marathoner ran 100 kilometres last year as part of a Terry Fox Foundation fundraiser for his school. This year he was joined on the run by friends and running enthusiasts with the Cornwall Multisport Club, as well as LSPS Grade 3 student Keaton Wagensveld, who was eager to join Callan after hearing about his plans. Wagensveld ran the 25-kilometre

stretch from Cornwall to Rothwell- Osnabruck School (RO) in Ingleside. He raised about $3,200 in pledges for the Terry Fox Foundation. Both Callan and Wagensveld said Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope prompted them to set such rigorous personal goals for their run. “I saw what Terry Fox did and it just in- spired me,” said Wagensveld. “Terry really deserves this,” added Callan. “His legacy is huge, so we have to do some- thing huge. Terry was such a good rolemodel and a great Canadian. This is our way of sharing and celebrating his legacy.” Callan and Wagensveld celebrated the run with students at Viscount Alexander Public School (VAPS) in the morning, after Callan arrived in Cornwall. They ran a cere- monial lap around the schoolyard with some VAPS students, before Callan, Wagensveld and their running partners headed off to complete the stretch to Ingleside. Earlier in the morning, Wagensveld dipped his foot into a canal of the St. Lawrence River near VAPS, in homage to Fox, who began the Marathon of Hope by dipping his foot into the Atlantic Ocean.

Many of Cornwall’s residents took part in this year’s Remembrance ceremony, held on November 11 at the City’s cenotaph. There, the crowd gathered, listened to prayers and watched as dignitaries carefully put down wreaths in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Canadians recognize Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, every 11 November at 11 a.m. It marks the end of hostilities during the First World War and an opportunity to recall all those who have served in the nation’s defence. — photos Francis Racine

YOUR HOROSCOPE for the week of November 13 to 19, 2016

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: TAURUS, GEMINI AND CANCER.

ARIES Your social life is going to keep you busy this week. A lot of people want to see you and you’ll do a lot of travelling to make it happen. You’ll also have a lot of catching

up to do. TAURUS

CROSSWORDS

You’ll be feeling the need to redecorate your home, so expect to do some shop- ping this week. You might be tempted to put up your Christmas decorations as well. GEMINI You’ll benefit from being creative, or from being a little lazy too. You could just as easily create a masterpiece as spend the week contemplating one. CANCER You feel out of place in a large crowd. Thankfully, you meet some people who will inspire and motivate you to take on new challenges. LEO You’ll feel the need to procrastinate this week. Your loved ones will help you get your priorities in order while putting a smile on your face. This helps you to discover a wonderful joie de vivre. VIRGO You’ll soon be embarking on a spontan- eous trip, even though it seems an unlikely project. At work, you’ll build a clientele that will bring you success and wealth. LIBRA You’re on your own unfortunately, at work and at home. Certain people will recognize your commitment and reward you for your efforts. SCORPIO Big changes are on the horizon. Just follow the music and your worries will simply disappear. Certain pet projects could develop more quickly than you think. SAGITTARIUS A financial issue at work needs to be clarified, which may cause tense negotia- tions. You’ll need to focus on balancing the different spheres of your life. CAPRICORN Love will play a big role this week and you will enjoy some special romantic moments. A colleague might also declare their love for you, albeit unexpectedly and somewhat inappropriately. AQUARIUS You’ll need plenty of rest to recover from a bad cold. Be prepared to spend a few of your sick days, which will mean bringing some work home with you towards the end of the week to catch up. PISCES Communicating with certain people will be difficult. Don’t be surprised to sud- denly hear from everyone all at once. Chances are, your phone won’t stop ringing!
