Physical Education

Prerequisites At least 14 credits in Year 12 PE (Level 2 NCEA), or HoD approval. Exclusion A student can take both Physical Education and Sports Leadership, based on HoD aproval. Description A full NCEA Level 3 course is offered in this year group. There is a strong academic focus in this course, with comprehensive studies of contemporary leadership, sociology, skill acquisition, biomechanics, training principles and physiology. The course is broken up into four main modules that cover a variety of contexts, which may include NFL, golf, and the globalisation commodification of sport. All programmes place an appropriate emphasis on the needs of the individual irrespective of his physical capacity, and on the need to create desirable attitudes through an academic understanding of the principles involved and through an enjoyment of the pursuit of personal fitness and participation in physical activity. Scholarship in Physical Education & Health is applied additionally as part of the programme.

Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance, with all 19 credits internally assessed. The following Achievement Standards will be assessed: • AS 91499 (3 credits – internal) Analyse a physical skill performed by self or others. • AS 91501 (4 credits – internal) Demonstrate quality performance of a physical activity in an applied setting. • AS 91504 (4 credits – internal) Analyse issues in safety management for outdoor activity to devise safety management strategies. • AS 91502 (4 credits – internal) Examine a current physical activity event, trend or issue and its impacts on NZ society • AS 91789 (4 credits – internal) Devise strategies for a physical activity outcome. Assessment is done through a variety of methods, including written assignments, seminars, practical performances and training diaries.
