Assessment This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3, with all 26 credits internally assessed.
Exclusions A student can take only Physical Education OR Sports Leadership, unless approved by the Assistant Principal – Curriculum. Description This course introduces students to the concepts and application of sports leadership, coaching principles and interpersonal skills. There will be a balance of both theoretical and practical elements to the course. Students need to be aware of the commitment to practical hours in order to meet assessment criteria of coaching and instruction. The course will give students the opportunity to work with Year 8 students across several disciplines, as well as becoming accredited with coaching or officiating qualifications.
The following Achievement Standards will be assessed:
• US 22770 (4 credits – internal) Demonstrate knowledge of sports coaching, the coaching environment, and sports participants needs. • US 22771 (4 credits – internal) Plan a beginner level coaching session for sports participants. • US 22768 (6 credits – internal) Conduct and review a beginner level coaching session. • US 25811 (4 credits – internal) Demonstrate and apply knowledge of effective communication for sport coaching practice. • US 21414 (4 credits – internal) Plan and run a recreation activity. • AS 91505 (4 credits – internal) Examine contemporary leadership principles applied in physical activity contexts.
NB: University Entrance will not be available via this course.
