Also, starting on April 8, we will transition to a new library management system – or in other words, a new way to manage checkouts, our catalog of materials and your library account. Our dedicated staff are working diligently to ensure the transition is as smooth and seamless as possible. The new system takes advantage of modern best practices in economy, design and security. Not only will it save thousands of dollars in software costs – it’ll help library staff serve you better. The upgrades to our system require us to close to customers on April 6 and 7. The new system will also include an updated online catalog of books, movies and more. These changes are almost all cosmetic and you should notice only slight changes in the way you use our catalog. We’ll post more details about the catalog changes on the library website soon. It’s truly our delight and privilege to bring you the astonishing variety of the programs and resources highlighted in this issue. We hope to see you soon and often in our libraries! Inside This Issue We’ve redesigned Library Happenings to make it easier to find events at the branches in your area. Museum Passes from AACPL Use your Library card to get free admission to participating local museums! Upon moving to Maryland in June 2022, my family was eager to start exploring the local area. We stopped by the closest library, signed up for a free library card, grabbed a copy of Happenings and learned about AACPL’s free museum passes! Each museum pass allows free general admission for up to four people and it couldn’t be easier to sign up for a pass through the library’s website at aacpl.net/things . In a matter of a few months, we "It couldn’t be easier to sign up for a pass through the library’s website at aacpl.net/things ." had walked the gardens and completed a scavenger hunt at the William Paca House & Garden, explored the reconstructed colonial buildings at Historic London Town & Gardens and learned about the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. This spring, we plan to explore the architecture and art of the Hammond-Harwood House Museum. Saving money is one of the most significant advantages of using the library’s museum pass program. We were able to visit some of the most historic museums and gardens in the area without paying a dime! We were thrilled to be able to provide our kids with enriching, educational and cultural experiences in our new community and offer them an opportunity to have a deeper connection to the local area. AACPL’s free museum passes are an incredible resource for those who are looking to explore the city’s cultural offerings at no cost. From our family to yours, we highly recommend!

Community Garden & Farmer’s Market at Crofton Library

Crofton Concert Series Alexander Peters (country-alternative) Thursday, March 14 at 7 pm Mama’s Black Sheep (country, rock, blues, pop)

While the Crofton Library is well known for an endless supply of books, exciting programs and helpful resources, the branch’s outdoor space also offers an opportunity to connect people with nature and each other. Working with library staff and volunteers, nonproft FarmUnity , created a 4,000 square foot community garden last year at the Crofton Library. Dedicated volunteers contributed their time and energy to help plant, water and harvest the community-built garden. Produce was then distributed to a clinic that helps Medicaid patients, giving them the opportunity to add healthy and homegrown produce to their diets. Library customers also benefited from the garden and found free produce inside the library!

"The garden is the product of Crofton community member Jitendra Rathod's dedication to making the world a better place," said Crofton Library Manager Rachel Troianos Halbig. "He wanted a way to bring the community together and support under resourced residents. The garden has energized the community while also supporting those in need." FarmUnity believes that everyone can benefit from growing their own food and connecting with nature. If you are interested in volunteering, please email farmunityusa@gmail.com . The community garden at the Crofton Library is expected to be back this year starting in May. Join us Thursday, May 23 at 6 pm to celebrate the start of the planting season with crafts, STEM activities and more! Another great way to eat well is by attending the Crofton Farmer’s Market located in the parking lot of Crofton Library. Stop by on Saturdays, March 9 and 23, April 6 and 20 and May 11, 18 and 25 from 9 am to 1 pm for an assortment of produce, meat, bread, specialty foods, crafts, food trucks and more.
