Points and Problems 1. 'To Timothy, my dearly beloved Son" (2 Tim. 1:2). Scripture presents no evidence that Paul had any chil dren, but, as in the case of Timothy, there is abundant evidence that he had many spiritual sons and daugh ters. Every believer should make it his earnest prayer and effort that he may have spiritual children in the King dom' of God. Some bemoan the fact that they are deprived of the blessing of children in the home and it is a misfortune, but none need be deprived of sons and daughters in the Lord. 2. "I thank God . . . that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers" (1:3). The note of gratitude never died out of Paul’s life. Even in this book sometimes called his "swan song,” Paul is still thank ful. Note the many things for which he gives thanks in all of his epistles. In this instance, he is grateful that he may share in Timothy’s ministry at Ephesus through prayer. Are you glad that a burden of prayer has been laid upon your heart? Are you seek ing to discharge this responsibility? 3. “The holy scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salva tion" (3:15). This does not mean that Timothy at that time was not saved. By faith in Christ the guilt of his sin had been removed and he was a pos sessor of eternal life, and saved from the penalty of sin. But the Scriptures teach that daily the believer may be delivered from the power of sin. The Word reveals the method of victory in the Christian life. The be liever thus is prepared for the day of Christ’s coming when the final phase of salvation, from the presence of sin, shall be experienced. Paul also made clear to. Timothy that the Word was able to make him wise in present ing the message of salvation in wicked Ephesus. 4. 'That the aged men be ,. . tem perate" (Tit. 2:2). The word “tem perate,” as used here, is not limited to the question of strong drink. It means to be sound-minded, prudent, careful, wise. Of course, no man under the influence of liquor is any of these things. Mature Christians ought to exhibit these qualities in every re lationship of life so that their testi mony will count for Christ.
