2018 ELECTION RESULTS DIRECTOR’S ELECTION

NO. VOTES

Hard to believe that we have reached the end of another season. As many of you read this you are likely packing and getting ready to leave, already left or have reached your summertime destination. Of course,

there are the brave few that stay with us all summer and deal with the heat! We have seen some changes in the management personnel this year. As many know Gary Marshall is retiring after 13 years of service. We have selected a new Activities Director, Meredith Pate who has spent time training with Gary at the end of this season and will be ready to hit the ground running in October. Please get to know Meredith a bit better by reading her bio elsewhere in the Oracle. Also, many have heard that Norbert Garcia is no longer with ORPS. We are currently working on filling this position and it will be announced to the membership once filled. We wish Gary and Norbert the best in their future endeavors. In other administrative news, just a reminder that Board meetings and some committee meetings will continue over the summer and agendas will be posted as the meetings draw closer. These agendas will have the teleconference instructions on them for those of you that would like to call in and listen to the meetings. In terms of physical projects, the largest ones will be the renovation of the El Saguaro pool area, creating 6 new pickleball courts at ES and adding new sun shades between the racket courts at both El Saguaro and La Palma. In addition to these improvements at the racket courts, the tennis courts will be getting new lights while both the fences at La Palma and El Saguaro will be modified to make it easier to watch matches from the breezeway. Along with these larger items, there will be many, many other smaller projects to make sure the resort is looking tip top for next season’s opening day. If you are not on the email list and would like to receive the Out and About emails, please email your information to Jennifer Miranda at jmiranda@orps.com. Also, in May we will be mailing out our annual disclosure packets that include the new budget and reserve study summary for the 2018-2019 fiscal year, along with some additional Association information. I would like to close by thanking all the residents, volunteers, committee members and board members for making it another great season here at Outdoor Resort, with a special thank you to the Oracle staff who continue to provide this great source of information each month. Safe travels to you all and we look forward to seeing you upon your return!

Message from the Board

First, we say good-bye to Brian Canfield and Maryellen Muir as their term of office on the Board has come to an end. We want to thank them for all of their contributions to the Board and the community. We in turn welcome J OHN B OUDIN and G REG F ARMER to the Board as well as T ED W ILSON to another term. The officers for next season are: President C RAIG W IRCH , Vice-President T ED W ILSON , CFO J IM W ALLER Secretary D EDE L OOP . We also want to thank our Owners that voted by a large margin to purchase the piece of property across from the main laundry. This will save money in the long run by not having to hold another vote or going to court. Financially the Resort is in good shape. The financials show the income is more than budgeted and expenses are less than budgeted. The projects to be completed over the summer have been ap- proved. Our Resort is run by volunteers; for committees, for events as well as your Board. All can attend committee meetings. Check them out and find what would be a good fit for your interests and abilities to contribute, then volunteer. There will be three Board teleconference meetings over the summer which you can access. P please do so to keep abreast of what we are doing. As you leave for your summer homes, travel safe so we can all meet again in the fall. D EDE L OOP , Board Secretary

SAFETY AND SECURITY It is interesting to see that many of our neighbors have taken action to improve security. Motion detector lights have been installed on the ladders on the rear of RV’s. Others have installed lights on trees at the rear of the lots. Some are solar powered, others are connected by extension cords that plug into the outlets on the electrical meter pedestal. Costco sells a high quality $40 solar light that is very bright. The convenience store has re-ordered U-locks, and also has bike alarms for sale. Many owners have purchased bike racks, and then use both cables and D-Locks to double lock the bikes to the bike rack. We are disappointed that some theft victims may not be filing reports with both ORPS Security and Cathedral City police. Friends often tell me the problem of speeding cars and vendors, but also speeding bikes and golf carts. Last week I saw a grandmother allowing a little girl to drive the cart and speed through two stop signs. Somehow we forget that golf carts are subject to the same driving laws as cars. It is very common to see golf carts cutting corners at intersections and ending up in the wrong lane. There is also good news. We are wrapping up another resort season with no serious injuries and no major crime. Have a happy and safe summer! C HARLIE L EAHY , Vice Chair

As the season is coming to an end I would like to wish everyone safe travels in transit to your destinations. I assure you that during the Off Season the efforts of my staff will not decrease and we will continue to look after your property with the intent that your lots and possessions are exactly as you left them upon your return. ADOPT A NEW OWNER The Communication Committee continues to focus on building relationships throughout the resort. Our main focus this year was “how to better communicate with new owners.” We feel we have made great strides in this area and we continue to seek ways to make their transition into Outdoor Resort smooth. This year we hosted Lunch and Learn Sessions for New Owners. The Lunch and Learn sessions were so popular that we opened them up to all interested owners and next season sessions are already planned. If you are a new owner from this past season 2017, please consider joining our Adopt a New Owner Program. We think that if each new owner in 2018 has a designated person to go to for information, their transition would be easier. Contact: orpscommunication@gmail.com if you are interested in learning more about this program. NEW OWNERS DATABASE Over the season we have worked closely with the front office staff to create a database that gives us the information we need to welcome new owners. NEW OWNERS POTLUCK MARCH 14 The final event for new owners this season was held in The Owners Lounge. We had over 30 people attend and all were happy to get acquainted with others and meet some Board Members and our General Manager. Many had just closed on their deals in 2018! 2018 OWNER’S RESOURCE GUIDE We have just about completed a new version of the 2018 Owners Guide. This has been a huge project as we needed to check and double check with so many committees, Board members and ORPS staff to ensure the information contained is accurate and up-to-date. We delayed the updating until all the Governing Documents were approved. It will be posted on our website soon. Paper copies available next season. COMMUNITY BUILDING AND COMMUNICATION As well as our hard-working dedicated Phase Representatives, all ORPS owners are invited to attend our first meeting November 5, 2018 . We won’t ask for you to commit to anything, we will just want to share our exciting plans for next season. November 5, 2018 Owners Lounge 10AM to noon Have a happy, healthy summer and we will see you in the fall!

Communications Committee Executive: 2018-2019 Chair: J OAN C RAVEN Vice-Chair: J UDY F ROESE Secretary: D AVE D UTHIE ORPSCOMMUNICATIONS@GMAIL.COM We hosted a seminar called Estate Planning, with a focus on out-of-state and out of country planning. Over 70 people attended. Lawyer J OSEPH A DELIZZI , an attorney from Encinitas gave valuable information as well as excellent handouts. He answered questions and we are hoping he is able to come again next season. Some questions would be better answered by a Californian Tax Accountant so if anyone knows of someone who specializes in this area please let us know. CONNECTING WITH OUR COMMUNITY The committee has worked to improve our interaction with the community as a whole. The Oracle, the Neighborhood Picnics, the Candidates Forum, receptionist for Photo Directory session are just some of the many ways we have presented ourselves. We have also worked to update our documentation so that the next communication executive has a detailed road map of expectations regarding our committee. We want clearly defined processes and procedures. We will be planning over the summer to see if there is a different way to organize our committee so we can be more effective . As a communication committee, we challenge ourselves to think strategically and ask: what is our role, are the events that have been traditionally held each year beneficial, does the name Phase Reps accurately describe our role, how can we create a good experience for our volunteer committee members, where are the gaps, what works, what does not, how do we work with the Marketing Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee? HEALTH & FITNESS COMMITTEE Another season is behind us with many accomplishments and changes. The Fitness Center Wall of Honor plaque has been made more visible by Signarama. This plaque identifies the individuals that made the new Fitness Center possible. Six laser engraved bricks, for the Pathway to Fitness, were sold with a potential of three more sales. The Health & Wellness Fair was a success with more attendees than last season. LifeStream Blood Mobile had 27 donors, 22 of which were first time donors. The membership has changed so your new committee will be: C HAVALLA L OPEZ -B ASSHAM , C HERI B OUDIN , G ABE F URTADO , M ARY E ASTWOOD , M ARYELLEN M UIR , S HERI P ETERSON , and T ERRY H UFF . All are new members this season except for Gabe. The meetings will continue to be the first Tuesday of November, January, February, and March at 10:30AM but will be held in the Owners Lounge as we’ve given up the ES West Room for the quilters. The new committee met on March 22 to determine their goals for next season. They will have another Health & Wellness Fair, offer monthly Health & Wellness speakers, and continue sales of the laser engraved bricks for the Pathway to Fitness. Stay tuned for additional goals, new ideas, and changes. After six years on the committee I leave you in good hands. I wish to thank everyone that I worked with over the years. P AM W ALKER Chair

FACILITIES PLANNING COMMITTEE It has been a busy season for our committee but when you return in the fall you will see the updates that we have been working on. The El Saguaro pool deck and pickleball court conversion will be taking place this summer. I would like to thank Michelle Moore and Michael Murray for their contributions to the FPC. We thank them for sharing their expertise and guidance for seeing that our resort remains a premier RV resort. We welcome C AROLYN C ANDLER to our committee who will be a wonderful asset in assisting us with our upcoming projects. Our next meeting is scheduled for November 1 in the East room at La Palma. All interested owners are welcome to attend and if you would like to contribute please let us know. As you leave at the end of our season drive safely. We look forward to meeting again in the fall. Happy Trails! A VA F ELT Chair

E. tirucallii It is the well known Pencil Euphorbia and is very dangerous. Euphorbia is one of the most readily available plants, even in supermarkets. Latex from this plant has been the cause of death, blindness and severe illness. The latex produces excruciating pain and severe inflammation if it gets into a cut on the skin or on to the eyeball. It produces a more intense irritation of the eyeball than of the skin which may result in ulcerations on the eyeball. On record is the death of an African adult male resulting from hemorrhaged gastro-enteritis after swallowing the latex as a cure for sterility. Deaths from poisoning after taking medicine made from the plant have also been reported. The juice has been used as a mosquito repellent and in India as an insecticide.

Another season at ORPS rapidly becomes only a fond memory of great friends; good people; tons of activity; and wonderful resort. Now we head home or wander in our rig until we come back next year. Lots of change describes our agenda. I pray only God’s best for all of us. A time of potential fear, will people receive and follow him, and will God do all He has promised? Joshua 1:9 "Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Anticipate His leading and caring for us as we renew old friendships, meet new people, mow our own lawn and adjust back into the lives of our kids and grandkids. God’s promise to Joshua is applicable to us. Thank the Lord for the wonderful gift of life and the ability to live it to the fullest. Allow God to lead as He is for us and not against us. Live with freedom and joy, peace and productivity. The Lord can free us from burdens of anxiety and worry. He will give us strength that endures, peace in the pressures, light for the way, wisdom for the choices, and love for those we will meet this summer. Give me faith to follow the lead you direct me with, and I am so happy that you watch my reactions to the miracles you bring to me. Thanks for reminding me that through You all things are possible. We have an outstanding, line up of speakers and musicians for next season’s Chapel. I pray you will make plans even now. Great people, challenges for living and DONUTS!!

Dear ORPS family... Genuine and most sincere thanks for all

the very generous gifts, meals, rides, cards, visits, calls, support, encouragement and most of all your prayers for my recovery. I am progressing and cannot thank you enough for giving me such lavish attention these past two months. Blessings to you all .. Luv, Margie Sleight

Hey ORPS Family! For those of you who have not met me yet, my name is Meredith and I will be joining you next season as your new Activities Director! I have been planning various events and activities for over 15 year for churches, other organizations and a community. I have planned concerts, dinners, theme parties, dance parties, comedy nights and many other exciting events! I am ecstatic to join you in the fall. See You Soon!, M EREDITH P ATE

Dusty (M ARK W AHLBERG ) and Brad (W ILL F ERRELL ) have joined forces to provide their kids with the perfect Christmas. Their newfound

partnership is put to the test when Dusty's old-school, macho Dad (M EL G IBSON ) and Brad's ultra-affectionate and emotional Dad (J OHN L ITHGOW ) arrive just in time to throw the holiday into complete chaos. April 10 Coco Despite his family's baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer A NTHONY

G ONZALEZ ) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of B ENJAMIN B RATT ). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning

and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of G AEL G ARCÍA B ERNAL ), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history. April 17 Murder on the Orient Express (Last One)

A lavish trip through Europe quickly unfolds into a race against time to solve a murder aboard a train. When an avalanche stops the Orient Express dead in its tracks, the world's greatest detective -- Hercule Poirot -- arrives to interrogate all passengers and search

I really did think my last submission to the Oracle was my last , but I do not feel I could leave ORPS without thanking everyone involved with my retirement party. Whether you were involved with organizing or working the event , I cannot begin to show how much I appreciate your efforts . I appreciate the food servers , line dancers, members of the chorus, those who set up and broke down , the sound, the emceeing of the event by Terry Fauteau , along with the Activities Committee. It could not have been any more perfect. It only confirms what I already knew, ORPS is the best place for me to have worked the last thirteen years. The people I have met and worked with have been very special to me and I hope we cross paths again someday. Thank you for such a wonderful send off and I will forgive you for making it more difficult for me to say goodbye. Gary

Big Star 2018 We would like to thank the cast and everyone that supported Big Star this year. The cast spends hundreds of hours re- hearsing as well as spending their own money on costumes. We have very little expense that comes out of the proceeds. This year’s expenses were a new LED spotlight, stage cur- tains and posters. The profit this year, minus these expenses, was over $3,800. This year we will be giving back 1/3 of the profits to charity organizations for research and patient sup-

The top three votes were for Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The balance of the profits will go to- ward LED stage lighting, and additional seating in the Owner’s Lounge. We are excited that many people want to join Big Star next year. We will plan a Big Star party sometime soon as well as another in the fall for current cast and anyone interested. Be looking for an email blast for the dates. Thank you, Maryellen Muir and Tom Ray (Big Star co-producers)

In an effort to cover the cost of printing the ORACLE in color with no increase to our dues, we are exploring options to have it pay for itself. If we can sell 6 pages of paid ads, the revenue would completely cover the printing costs without the need to solicit subscriptions. If you know of someone who would like to advertise in our magazine, please email the oracle or drop off a note at the Oracle Office. We hope to form an Ad committee to meet and work the end of October and the first week of April to confirm our Ads for the season. If you would like to be part of the Ad volunteers, please let me know. This may take as little as a few days and at most a week or two. This is your ORACLE Eva Norcross, Editor ORACLE@ORPS.COM
