High Tea hobnobbing helps fight cancer

«I just like that period,» she said. «I think it’s fun.» Friends in the know helped put her in touch withDesrochers, also a Victorian tea enthusiast, who served as a regular hos- tess for a small coterie of friends each year at her own genuine Victorian-style home in Morewood, complete with a large and ornate garden courtesy of her husband, an avid horticulturist. The first Morewood «high tea» event featured two seatings for 40 guests each. Demand for places resulted in a third sea- ting the second year and the event has re- mained at three seatings for a total of 120 servings of tea, cucumber sandwiches, and other traditional items on a Victorian bill of fare, finishing with servings of genuine Victoria cake with a good helping of fresh strawberries, just the way Queen Victoria herself liked it. Most guests during the first and second year of the tea tried to at least arrive wearing some kind of fancy hat, especially those among the gentler sex. By the third year, Ivanski noted, almost everyone attending the tea came dressed in at least formal wear, with a few going so far as to try and find
Summer “high tea” in June has become one of the major social events of the sea- son in Morewood. The Fourth Annual Victorian Afternoon Tea and Garden Tour on June 20 saw its customary full-seating of guests. Organizers Marie-Claire Ivanski and Claire Desrochers hosted their usual successful benefit event for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, with about $4000 raised by the end of the afternoon to help the cause of research and support programs for women who have breast cancer. Taking «high tea» in Morewood has be- come one of the «must do» social events of the season for many who have attended since Ivanski and Desrochers and their experienced teamof volunteers first began laying out the place settings four years ago. The event began when Ivanski, a regular organizer of fundraisers for cancer research and other causes, began pondering ideas for a fun spring social gathering. Her own interest in the Victorian era was the origi- nal spark.

either Victorian-style costumes or clothing that came close tomimicking the Victorian fashion. The menu for the Morewood tea has also received favourable comparison to that provided during High Tea at the Châ- teau Laurier or at Mackenzie House. Some
patrons have even remarked that cucum- ber sandwiches and other treats offered at Morewood might be superior. The date for next year’s MorewoodHigh Tea is already set for June 25, for anyone who wishes to mark their 2016 calendar now.

À l’automne 2014, Centraide Prescott- Russell a aidé à acheter un défibrillateur externe automatisé pour la salle communautaire située au sous-sol de l’église Holy Trinity sur la rue Laurier, à Rockland. Cette salle est utilisée quotidien- nement par divers groupes sociaux en plus du Club Fil d’argent et il arrive fréquemment que 150 personnes participent aux diverses activités. L’achat de cet équipement était of- fert avec une formation pour 20 personnes. « C’est avec plaisir que j’ai écrit mon pre- mier rapport en tant que directrice générale de Centraide United Way Prescott Russell (CUWPR). A déclaré Mme Densmore. De- puis mon entrée en fonction, en août 2014, j’ai eu l’honneur de recevoir un solide appui de tous les secteurs de notre collectivité – nos organismes partenaires, notre conseil d’administration et nos donateurs. Cet appui incroyable s’est traduit par une campagne réussie au cours de laquelle nous avons dépassé notre objectif. » Pour sa part, le président, Louis Béland, est heureux du travail fait par l’équipe. « Nous avons de plus en plus de bénévoles d’impliqués, nous avons de plus en plus de projets communautaires qui fleurissent, et nous avons de plus en plus d’impact positif et constructif dans la communauté. »
Centraide de Prescott-Russell a tenu son assemblée générale annuelle, le 17 juin dernier, à Plantagenet. La directrice générale, Jodie Densmore, s’est dite satisfaite de la campagne de 2014 pour la collecte de fonds qui a dépassé l’ob- jectif de 250 000 $. « Nous avons amassé 283 000 $, a-t-elle précisé, et chacun de ces dollars ira pour les programmes commu- nautaires de Prescott-Russell. Nous sommes très reconnaissants du geste des donateurs et des volontaires. » Centraide Prescott-Russell a également accueilli, au cours de la soirée, trois nouveaux membres au sein du conseil d’administration. Il s’agit de Shirley Gratton Payer, de Roger Coulombe et deMarc Pha- rand. Mme Densmore en a profité pour souhaiter la bienvenue à Sonja Suter, étu- diante qui travaillera pendant huit semaines à Centraide Prescott-Russell.
