Russell’s grads celebrate their success

Their first great adventure is behind them now and another awaits for close to 200 new graduates from among the student population at Russell’s two village high schools. Families and friends of the Classes of 2015 at Russell High School (RHS) and St. Tho- mas Aquinas Catholic High School (STA) in the Village of Russell attended and cheered on the 185 cap-and-gowned students step- ping up to receive their diplomas to mark the completion of their high school years. Russell High School is part of the Upper Canada District School Board, while St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School is part of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. «The faculty of St. Thomas Aquinas High School is very proud of the accomplishments and achievements of all of our graduates,» stated Principal Donna Koekkoek. «The Class of 2015 has a very bright future ahead.» The graduating class for RHS this year numbered 71, including valedictorian Car- leigh Trottier, while the STA Class of 2015 tallies at 114, including valedictorian Jenna May Clune. This year, during the graduation ceremo- ny at STA, 80 awards, medals of excellence, and bursaries were handed out to students who excelled in academics, athletics, arts and community service. named the STA recipient of the Governor General’s Medal for Excel- lence, which is presented to a student at a school who has achieved the highest overall average in the combination of all Grades 11 and 12 courses. Nicolas Everett was named as STA’s recipient this year of the Ontario Lieutenant-Governor’s Community Volunteer Award.

At Russell High School, 95 special awards, bursaries, andmedals for excellence were presented.This year’s recipient of the Governor General’s Medallion for Excellence is Natalie Cross while the reci- pient of the Ontario Lieutenant-Governor’s Community Volunteer Award is Shelly Chelsey Hardy.
