EMERGING SPEAKER SHOWCASE
Dental Humanities: An Introduction to Serious Play
Hartley Jafine, MA
Dentistry, like theatre, is both an art form and a skill set; clinical interactions and patient encounters combine unpredictable situations and a need for adaptability. Applied drama and improv use the principles and practices of theatre in non-theatrical settings for the purposes of skill building, collaboration, reflection and awareness. Through applied theatre, this course will illustrate how a humanities approach to dentistry can enhance clinical competencies, engage in reflective practice and enhance wellness through creative play. Learning Objectives: • To define applied drama and improv and identify its role in dentistry and dental education • To use the humanities to enhance clinical skills (communication, empathy, awareness, collaboration) • To experience the energizing, focusing, collaborative and self- reflective processes in an applied drama and improv course
