Hacking Peri-implantitis
Preety Desai, BSc., DDS, Dip. Periodontics, MSc
The role of therapeutic lasers in health care is ever-burgeoning, whether for surgical, interventional or preventive therapies for treatment of disease and pathology. It is with equal importance that dental practitioners update their knowledge and skill set to take advantage of the erbium laser’s unique ability with dental hard and soft tissues in delivering our surgical skills in a “minimally invasive” and beneficial manner. Peri-implantitis treatment involves the removal of the contaminated oxide layer of the implant surface. Many mechanical devices on the market are unpredictable, while the erbium lasers leave the implant surface “virginal” to receive the benefits of regeneration with all our traditional techniques. Learning Objectives: • Scientifically differentiate between commercially available lasers on the market and understand the physics behind their different clinical abilities • Demonstrate how the proper wavelength and machine settings can be preferential for removal of biofilm and microbiome, along with titanium oxide removal, which enhances regeneration treatment for PI versus mechanical or chemical detoxification methodology • Prevent extraction-site defects with a MINIE laser extraction technique and optimize laser physics to reduce socket pathogens and socket graft failure by removal of granulomatous tissues
